The Football Manager Addiction…
Hi. My name is Ahmed Bilal, and I’m a recovering Football Manager addict.
At this point, some of you may think this as non-serious. That leads me to assume that you’ve never actually played a version of Football Manager (I’ve been playing FM 08 over the weekend, but more on that later) - either that or you watch football for the men, in which case Kickette (hey V!) might be an appropriate (if immediate) reroute for you.
For many (include a blogging celebrity-in-making (I kid you not)) footie fans, Football Manager is a real danger, a scourge on our personal (and professional lives), systematically breaking down defences until all you can think about is the glory of England beating Italy 5-4 in the World Cup 2010 semi-final or England handing out a thumping (without the requisite goals) 1-0 defeat to France in the Euro 2012 final (a game won as much by kicking Henry off the pitch as by attacking football). I may have just turned 25, and I may be a professional blogger and marketing consultant, but I’m also a guy who loves football and would give just about anything (a few days of my life? no problem!) to see my team win something (as things stand, my team will have trouble making it to Euro 2008).
The new FM 08 - in case you haven’t bought it or downloaded it through a torrent yet - has the following (significant) improvements in my view:
- International football - well done, I must say.
- Much brighter screens - love the new colours.
and…
that’s about it. Damn, 3 days of playing it straight and all I’ve noticed is that the screen is unusually bright for a FM incarnation. Perhaps when I delve into club football (imagine managing Rooney and Tevez), or take the leap of playing FM via network, I’ll learn more. For now, you’re welcome to add what you think is new to FM 08.
Right now, it’s taking every ounce of self-control to not fire it up and have another go at it - must resist…

Ahmed, I envy you. With all the time in the world, working from home. FM Addiction is good for your lot.
I can’t afford to touch FM, but withdrawal from FM addiction becomes that much more tougher when I’ve heard glowing reviews from peers.
Can’t. Resist. That. Download.
Must. Seek. Help.
(P.S: What’s with the blogging celeb in the making? Am I missing something?)
you can select the width and length of the pitch, which means you can change your tactics accoring to the dimensions.the faces of the players change as they get old.
YOU CAN EVEN CHANGE MONEY BETWEEN THE BUDGETS.
SALARY->TRANSFER and vise versa
RED HERRING;I predicted the 7 out of 10 in the weekend…Do I win anything?
gawd, played FM 06 on the network with a friend…. absolutely amazing… you even forget to pee lol.. quite literally…
i remember having my MSc exams in a week’s time and being on the peak of my management lol…..
Hi. My name is Karl and I’m a FM addict. At least I was until I sought help (official version). Unofficial version (I was till my wife ‘DISPOSED’ of my PS games and banned me from opening my laptop at home).
I got majorly sick last week (not because of FM mind you). Just got a serious bout of influenza. This all came while writing part-time University exams. Lots of pressure.
Why do I mention this? I could not sleep - I guess it was the fever breaking - but, what was weird was the nightmares that caused me to wake up litterally every 5 minutes. None of the ‘pressures’ of studying, work, or family life, BUT, ‘My team selection in OFM!!!’ My wife could forgive my tampering with the team every now and then when I should have given my family some quality time, but this, the nightmares, was taking it a bit too far. Imagine, having nightmares about team selections
Would like to check FM08 out though
Hi my name is Andrei and I was a FM addict. I loved it so much that I pretty much flunked every single subject that term. Admittedly I did manage to go a few seasons winning every game and I did take england to 3 succesive World Cups (in real life it would be ambitious to even dream of this). But I did have nightmares about losing Torres to Chelsea and paying 50 million euros for Fabregas in 2010 only for him to get injured 10 months after his first game…
Eventually I realised that it was wasting my life. So I got a new computer and did not install it. TAKE THAT. Right now I am spending time usefully playing PowerChallenge - which admittedly is terrible but relatively addictive.
Thanks Nikos
RR - I’m serious. IM me or something.
Good to hear that I’m not the only one who wakes up at night thinking about team selection and world cup semi-finals..
I am also an FM addict. Though its getting serious now. A lack of sleep is not good.
Walking through to my bedroom in the (not so) wee hours of this morning, nearing on the point of sleep deprived paranoia (I was convinced that sombrero in my room was moving… It spent the night downstairs), I decided that this madness must stop.
That lasted until about midday. Still, at least these releases no longer coincide with exams… they were killers.
[...] credentials to manage England - with that in mind, it’s interested to take a look back at my weekend romp with FM 08 and look at what it takes to manage [...]
I’ve got a 21 year old English forward called Adam Morgan. He’s the spitting image of Thierry Henry, but he drifts from the right hand side. I always wanted to see how he’d do with Henry as a partner, but Henry’s about 32. Is it worth buying him as a curio?
Oh yeah, I’m a FM addict as well.
its not easy for us footballing junkies. as soon as FM08 consumes us, Pro Evo 2008 rears it beautiful head and engulfs us all!!
