I think you may be reading too much into your average goals conceded stat. Randomn variation and luck play a bigger part in scoring and conceding goals than most people are willing to believe. If you track the big four since 2000 you can see their goals conceded vary greatly with no real pattern.
If you like american sports then check out ussmariner.com, fangraphs.com or advancednflstats.com.
They do some great stat analysis and you can learn alot about what is and isn't significant.
I think stats can tell us more about football than the average fan thinks - the challenge is collecting the data, analysising it and decided what is useful.

Barcelona have been on a great run, because teams open up against them, If you watch them now, they are getting tired in the last 15 mins of games, the adrenaline only comes for so long, we saw it in the Euros where Holland were ace, but ended up loosing out

Great stats Scott! I don't remember a season with so many so called 'park the bus' games. It's been a story of Utd. winning 1-0 and the rest of the top 4 failing to break down the defence often enough...so far.

The mentality definitely seems to have changed. Some sort of goals scored incentive could be interesting, as donnelly suggests.

It would be better for attacking football if winning teams got some extra points after scoring, for example 3 pts for a 1-0, 2-0 or 3-1 win, but 4pts for a 3-0, 5-1, and 5 pts for winning with at least five goals. Something similar to what Arsene Wenger wanted.
