Did I actually refer to the classic 3-2 'Pool win over City as a "derby thriller"? A thriller it was, but nothing more. (I really must give my eyeballs and brain a respite from all this electronic goal-hunting...)

Kudos (and sympathies) for enduring the endlessly tiresome forensics of that highly-praised door-stopper (you're so far the only person, of the several I've heard from who got it for Christmas, to admit it's the Grinch Gift of the Millennium).

But literary complaint is not our mission here, doing justice to the skills of Stephen Ireland comes closer, and I've attempted to do that for you over in the proper place, in the comments thread on the England/Scotland section. Thanks for representing your man, who deserves it. (And probably it will be easier for you now to love that sweet volleyed opener of his vs. Liverpool, knowing as I'm sure you do that the result in that derby thriller went your way in the end...)

And to think I settled on spending the holiday "snuggled up" reading Roberto Bolaño's tome 2666. 500 pages in and it is crime report after crime report, not to detract from the sad fate of las muertas de Juárez Bolaño bravely writes about. No mention of football yet, of course, but a lot of harsh and funny words for his homeland Chile... Great to see Chile's amazing goal against Argentina captured here. Also, The African Cup strikes are routinely ineffable. Unbelievable. I hope that tournament gathers momentum outside of Africa, as what outsider would want to miss such seemingly impossible feats all accomplished within a single competition? That cup contains enough gems to outperform the EPL over the course of a season. Like La Santa, your efforts here are the holiday gift that keeps on giving, and I must offer accolades for your one-man Madden bus endeavor. Thank you!
Finally, since I notice some commentators have included further wish lists, I was wondering if you thought the efforts of Stephen Ireland at City this past year merited any notice? Thanks again!
