BD - If I don't go along, there are not two more people waiting for the ticket. The stadium is half empty, unless Real Madrid or Barcelona are playing. I literally mean half empty - around 17,000 in a stadium that holds just under 35,000.

I also acknowledged that the EPL does not seem to be affected - at the moment. It seems to me that there's a very Anglocentric (or more accurately EPL supporters' view)of the situation around. It's the belief that the EPL will always be as fashionable and popular as it is just now. Also worth bearing in mind perhaps that it would have been crazy until recently not to look for a 'fair market price' for a house - and look where that's left the economy.

Personally, I think I can find better value for money elsewhere: the cinema, other sports and types of entertainment, including concerts. By the way, I speak as someone who has been watching football for over thirty years and it's always been my favourite sport/pastime.

Ahmed - I agree that slashing prices doesn't lead to a drastic increase in demand. I'd like to think it would be the case but I've seen experiments with this and it doesn't appear to work. However, there's a happy medium somewhere between slashing prices and raising them by 25% in the space of a year, don't you think?

Building on what Brian said...

Economically, football ticket prices are price inelastic. Raising them will not lead to a drastic fall in demand and similarly, slashing them will not lead to a drastic increase in demand (contrary to popular expectations).

Compare ticket prices to the price of going to a concert or the theatre and I think you will find that they compare favourably.

It comes down to supply and demand. The huge popularity of the game means that for every fan that can't afford to go 2 more will appear looking for that ticket. Clubs would be crazy not to ask 'fair market price' for entry.

Frankly, I'm tired of fans moaning about ticket prices as if the club should undersell itself just to give them a discount. As I said, if you don't want the ticket there's a queue waiting who do.
