Thatcher Puts Mendez In The Hospital - Video

You may have read about it, but I doubt you’ve seen the actual incident.

Painful story short - Pedro Mendez tries to control / clear the ball near the touchline, and Ben Thatcher (described as a ‘good man off the field’ by Redknapp) runs in at full throttle, hitting Mendez in the face with an elbow and hurtling him into the advertising sideboards.

End result? Thatcher walks away with a yellow card, Mendez is knocked unconscious, has seizures, is put on oxygen and ultimately taken to the hospital where he’s kept overnight.

We talk about handballs not being given and dives being given as penalties, and we fight so much about who is cheating and who is not.

How about we tell our referees, first and foremost, to cut this sort of violence out of football?

Redknapp quote:

“The FA have to do something, it is there for all to see.

I do not want to see anyone suspended but how could that possibly not be a red card?

What do you have to do to get a red, kill someone?”

More on the story:

Sidenote: Rooney serves a 4-match ban because the defender he is supposed to have fouled forgot to jump for a regulation header and as a result got hit by Rooney’s arm when the United forward came back down. With that in mind, what sort of punishment would Thatcher get?

  1. It’s shocking! How Dermot Gallacher didn’t see this, is unbelievable…..well, maybe not that unbelievable! Saw this on Sky last night and the commentator said it gets worse every time you see it, and he’s right it does!

The FA need a good overhaul of all their rules and regulations. Video evidence needs to be used for incidents like this! He did the same with Nicky Summerbee when he was at Wimbledon (i think). My mate reckons a 10 game ban. If Di Canio gets a 10 game ban for pushing over a ref, then Thatcher surely deserves 15 games minimum!

Best wishes for Mendez for a speedy recovery!

  2. Ben Thatcher is a fucking thug, has always been one. He even did a poor bloke’s lung during a pre-season friendly in Shanghai, China.

Should be given a heft ban considering how fucking deliberate that was and that he’s had a history of such behaviour.

  3. If anyone is wondering if any man city fan (apologies to the sane ones) would be stupid enough to defend Thatcher, read the comments on this post:

  4. Indefensible horrible strike. He went out to smash the guy, and he did. Lucky his fist wasn’t fast enough is all I can think of right now.

  5. As hard a man as Stuart Pearce ever was, I heard him today say Thatcher’s behaviour was “undefendable”. Indeed it was.

I hope the police do get involved.

  6. ben thatchers tackle has no place in football, its pure thuggery legal charges shoulg be brought against him, this gives english football a very bad name.fuck it a year ban would do the trick.
