Tevez can be Manchester United’s Essien

Written by Ahmed Bilal

Carlos Tevez

Carlos Tevez has essentially confirmed what we’ve been talking about for the last few months - that’s there’s a very good chance that he will be leaving West Ham this summer.

The problem is, though, that no one knows where he’s going, nor do they know where MSI stand on his ownership.

Carlos Tevez is going to be THE catch of the season this summer - and if Manchester United are able to sign him, they will have brought in a player who has the never-say-die spirit of Robson, Cantona and Keane, and the drive to keep battling at 110% from start till finish.

Giving Rooney a combative strike partner will allow both players to share the battling responsibilities, allow them to rotate and most importantly, will give Manchester United a star option that Ferguson can put in the starting lineup or on the bench and rest assured that this player can change the game in favor of Manchester United.

The current Manchester United’s team’s journey has just begun - and while we need balance, we also need more matchwinners. Relying on Ronaldo, Rooney and Rio is not enough.

  1. I would love us to sign Tevez. Bring him in along with Hargreaves and we’d havea cracking 433 linup. Hargreaves and Carrick controling the midfield and protecting the defence, Scholes attacking from midfield and 3 roaming forwards in Ronaldo, Tevez and Rooney - all 3 can play anywhere along the front line.

However, I keep hearing too much about MSI, and 31million. Neither appeal to me. If we could get him, and shot of MSI for anywhere under 15million he’d be a bargain.

Hopefully we do go for him, and get him.

I don’t see this happening Im afraid:

    a) The MSI crap

    b) Way too similar to rooney…both like to play in behind a front man and I can see the crowding each other out. We need a through and through striker not a playmaker forward so to speak.

No doubt though, the man is class

  3. I strongly disagree with the ’similar’ to rooney bit. armchair punditry, i’m afraid.

Rooney can play lead striker, so can Tevez. These guys are versatile, and they can adapt as needed.

the support striker argument is like saying that Ronaldo is only a right-winger and can’t play on the left.

  4. May 11, 2007 nemanjasaramy

rather see berbatov or huntelaar, simply because wit a tevez rooney strike force, there’s is a height issue as well as both players like to play in the hole behind an actual front ma. There’s is no doubting tevez’s class, but imo, we actually need an out and out striker not a similar player 2 rooney.

  5. May 11, 2007 Shaheen Seedat

    Ahmed,

Ok.. Let me rephrase… Both are better playing as support strikers, well at least in my opinion. And I definitely think they are very similar players. Both like to roam around looking for the ball and looking to create. As nemanjasaramy points out, if we are to buy a striker you can bet your bottom dollar it will be a more out and out striker

  6. Ahmed, we shouldn’t be so greedy. We have Rossi, an exceptional talent, returning next season. We cannot put an other superstar among these talented youngsters.Rossi needs to play week in week out and will have to fight for a place with Giggs anyway. Rooney and Ronaldo won’t be dropped, they can only be rested after a long run of games.

  7. we don need another attacker, I’d like to see this line up next season:

    VDS
    GNEV? RIO VIDIC EVRA/HEINZE

    CARRICK HARGREAVES

    SCHOLES?
    NANI/QUARESMA? RONALDO
    ROONEY

? INDICATES A POSSIBLE REPLACEMENT BEING BROUGHT IN, AS FOR ANOTHER ATTACKER I REALLY REALLY LIKE THE LOOK OF THIS QUARESMA KID!

  8. Just to put something completely different out there: Apparently all of Europe are chasing Dutch side Heerenveen’s star striker Afonso Alves. He is a 26 year old Brazilian who scored 34 goals in 31 games for them including 5 hat tricks!!! If Man U are looking for someone with speed, ability and goals then this is their man! Check out this vid:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1pmsRBSsn4

He reminds me of Eto’o the way he just glides past people but we’d sure have to pay a lot less!

  9. May 11, 2007 siddharth

manchester utd team for next season according to me
    Playing 11:- Edwin,Gary,Rio,Vidic,Heinze
    Ronaldo,Carrick,Scholes,Nani
    Rooney,Samuel Eto

    Substitute :- Tevez,Giggs,Kusczak,Hargreaves,Evra

  10. May 11, 2007 Tony Montana

Berbatov or Darren Bent. Both have adapted to the premiership. Both are tall. Bent hase pace and berbatov has vision and finishing. Bent and Rooney partnership will be amazing. Berbatov and Rooney partnership will be even better.

  11. Alfonso Alves, read Ronaldinho coming out and asking barca to buy him and that it would cost them on the price range of 20M++. But can you really trust soccer news these days. That guy has skills, can head the ball, frightening pace and trickery and most importantly he CAN score goals. But will he adapt? He doesn’t seem like a strong tough lad, and in this league, he might get pushed around quite abit before he gets the hang of it. Tevez, however is a different story. Settling period over, a pitbull in essence. What more can you ask for. He can handle the tough tide and I think will get better next season. He will be well worth his 20M price tag if that is the asking price. One season back, I thought Tevez was the player to bring us to another level and I still maintain that view. A battler and more importantly, he knows the back of the net and knows the position of his team mates. Although, I still think Torres or Berbatov is a better choice, what are the chances they will come? Zero?

  12. Rio! a match winner? When did that become so??!! … Could it be a match whinger? Anyhow, let’s not get carried away with a few battling performances towards the end of the season by Teves, he didn’t fare well at all for the first few months. This spells “inconsistency” which is something you cannot live with if you are going for major honour year in year out. The expectations at United are so high that many of us would still regard this season as just about OK if we only end up with the Premiership.
Other factors to consider are that on the whole, South American players don’t fare very well at all in the north of England (weather, culture, lack of SA community or whatever reason). Yes there are the odd exceptions but in general they don’t. Add that to what Teves has just said, ahead of possibly West Hams most important match of the season (”I will leave this club if we go down or stay up”), we get another character that is willing to puts his own interests ahead of his team. Do we really want him?

  13. Tevez is a more clinical version of Rooney. They’d make a great partnership. Id rather though have us play our European system with Tevez, Rooney and Ronaldo behind a forward like Torres than have them as a partners in a 4-4-2 .. But that’s just me…

  14. Alves has been quite special this season, but there is always a risk with the dutch league. Kezman had pretty much the best scoring percentage ever seen in the league before his move to Chelsea, and since then has had a less-than-mediocre career. Alves does seem made of different stuff, but I’d be surprised if he didn’t move to somewhere like: Ayax (if Huntelaar leaves), Werder Bremen, Sevilla, Valencia (if a striker leaves). I’d be surprised to see him at Barcelona/Real, Inter/AC/Roma, Man Utd/Chelsea/Arsenal/Liverpool.

  15. May 11, 2007 Mateioo

Tevez=No go! Way to similiar to Rooney! Huntelaar/Torres ok! Because I believe they can be used as a target man. Get Hargreaves and if possible both Nani and Bale! Of course, we’d have to get in a right-back, and if a couple of our “reserves” were sold off, we would be able to buy Richards… while having Evans and Pique to fight for a first team spot!

  16. It looks like SAF had an opportunity to sign Tevez, but turned it down. So I wouldn’t think he would be coming now.

I have been a Tevez fan since his Boca days, but I just don’t think he has the qualities United need in a striker. I do think he will go on to become quite successful in the EPL.

Nazar, I think anytime you cross hemispheres there is going to be some acclimation needed. Tevez definately had a rough start but that is to be expected. From all of the reports I read he wasn’t exactly welcomed with open arms in the Hammers dressing room. That would make it hard to settle at any club, let alone the staffing changes and regualtion battle. It’s my opionion that he is the reason the Hammers even have a chance to stay up. But in the end I agree with your assessment, we don’t need him.

  17. FORGET ALFONSO ALVES…Even Nikos Machlas, that Greek crap, won the golden boot by playing for Vittesse!

Come on guys, let’s be serious he plays for Heerenveen and he is not european!Steve we all know how shitty are the defense lines in Holland,we don’t really need that video as an evidence…

As for Tevez he is a great charismatic striker.MEGATONES of technique and great Argentian balls. But I don’t think we need more balls in this team.We already have Ronaldo and his great EGO…We saw Ronaldo shooting one mile away out of the box and we saw him messing it up with the free kicks. We don’t have to go for another huge-EGO player.

We need a European professional striker or a physically gifted African one.We can’t have Ruud or henry, neither can we have Drogba or Etoo.So maybe we shall stay with Saha and Rossi+Alan smith.

I can see Saha living in January. We ‘ll talk about the striker transfer then!

  18. hey ahmed, can i ask why you’re posting on a liverpool fan site?
    http://www.anfieldred.co.uk/2007/05/11/fowlers-last-game-at-anfield-on-sunday#comment-9034

  19. why does everyone keep mentioning huntelaar?? he’s not that good. check out some of his goals.. he’s worse than dirk kuyt n thats saying something. huntelaar has been made to look good by games such as football manager (or the old championship manager). anyone can score in the dutch league. why do you think that they get less points when working out goals-per-season?! some people may know what i am talking about. huntelaar isn’t man united.. he would fair better at a team like villareal or something. also if anyone can say that tevez isn’t a good enough player for us then you need to fix up! oh and to the guy that said that tevez was rubbish in his first few months.. look at sheva.. probably the best finisher on the planet.

  20. I don’t think Tevez has quite the ability to “bang ‘em in” that United needs in its next striker acquisition. However I definately see his versatility fitting in with the Giggs/Rooney/Ronaldo style of play. He could definitely come in as a utility man - though this would probably spell the death of our current attacking utility Park.

P.S Adam, judging by the sites linked in the bottom right corner of that site I imagine Ahmed owns it.

  21. Saha leaving in Summer is a sure thing fergie has had enough of his crap…….tevez is not afergie player and will not be signed under any circumstances no matter how good we all think he is…especially with MSI involved.. torres would without any doubt be the better signing as will score twice as many goals as tevez and is suited to leading the line…someone mentioned quaresma and they obviously dont have an clue as this is a girlie player suited only to leagues where tackling is frowned upon..this guy has already failed in spain…so saha will go to lyon torres, huntelaar or dare we sy it owen to replace him and we will also sign hargreaves or sidwell as well as nani

  22. Adam - I think you already have (asked it).

Why do you care? The insinuation in your comment / question is that it is somehow wrong for me to comment on a Liverpool site.

Are you really that blinkered as to think that that is wrong?

Or do you think that I shouldn’t be commenting on any other sites that don’t worship the ground Roy Keane once walked on?

I’d be more interested in knowing what pushed you to ask that question.

As for your answer, there’s a very simple reason - they had a couple of articles on their site that I wanted to comment on.

  23. i suppose the likes of van nistelrooy and bergkamp coming from the dutch league makes them average players as well???

  24. u are not a man u fan u are an arm chair football follower

  25. Steve - read this.

If your definition is that a true man utd fan has to hate all things liverpool, then mate, I agree completely with your analysis of your hallucinations - i.e. that I’m not a man utd fan.

    Quite frankly, I couldn’t care less :)

United fans are welcome at RedRants.com, btw :)

  26. no no but that my friend is part of the gig are u actually telling me that u like liverpool and man u???laughable…whereabouts do u sit in the theatre of dreams anyway??

  27. so if I don’t hate liverpool i’m supposed to like them?

    I’m ambivalent - couldn’t care less actually.

tell you what - before you go off assuming more about me, why don’t you read the liverpool articles I’ve written?

  28. have u even been to old trafford??

  29. didnt think so and whats more u dont belong there u wouldn’t enjoy the abuse the scousers get

  30. So basically the fact that I can’t afford a trip to the UK and to come watch United play at Old Trafford - never mind the fact that I’ve been following United for 14 years - matters more to you?

Fantastic mate. In that case I’ve got nothing to say to you.

  31. yeah thats about it u just dont understand

  32. There’ll be a host of teams after him - but Carlos has shown he can play in the Premiership - and play well - so would half expect he’d want to stay in England.
His work rate, skill - plus determination are first rate - and wherever he goes he will be a big favorite.
He’d be great at ManU - but would expect Liverpool and even Chelsea to be interested - specially if Shevchenko leaves for Milan in the summer.
These last few games for West Ham - Tevez has been a joy to watch - and you can never accuse the boy of not being enthusiastic!

  33. Steve - lighten up :D

  34. Hey guys.What about the TEVEZ-article?

Chill out …Whoever can watch MU at OT doesn’t mean he ’s a fan of Manchester Utd or even a football fan.

And Steve I’ve already told you that MACHLAS SCORED 34 goals for Vittesse! It was 1998 then.Remember?

Ronaldo comes from PSV,Ruud had PSV as his last Dutch team and Bergkamp is an Ajax prodigy-child! When Machlas went to Ajax he was a total crap and he was loaned out to Sevilla.

When we see Alfonso Alves playing for PSV or Ajax, then we ‘ll have a safer criterion.

  35. I dont want to see tevez at united. I agree he has done brilliantly over the last couple of months and he has many attributes that embody the spirit of man utd, but he plays exactly like rooney, which makes no sense. You need a pair of strikers that complement each other, so the defense cannot set a definite plan and cancel out the the threat. So it makes no sense to have two strikers who play exactly the same. They both use pace and power to get by opponents, the both go deep to retrieve the ball and they both have the same style about them. We might want him but we dont need him, so lets concentrate on the players we need before looking at luxuries.

  36. A, Imagine that a team has no place for two strong, quick, skillful players. I always thought that it was these players that teams coveted. I think that many have no idea what a team needs to be successful or like to see their words in print.

Tevez can be a success at ManU but with the Hargreaves purchase and the return of players on loan its hard to see Manchester splashing out on another player in this window.I venture that unless a world class striker is on offer and someone Under 26 no striker purchases will be forth coming at the top of the price range.

About Steve it is true that foreign Manchester United players cannot see football as an English fan cause we support the team because of the football they play and live or die for everything they do because of the joy they bring us while many of you support a team because you live close to it.

  37. Man Utd fans seem to have a new flavor of the month, well… every month.

  38. May 13, 2007 Eto'o the united player

Man utd’s transfer window should look like this if I were SAF.

    IN

Nani 17.5 mil - buy out clause
    Tevez …. mil (hopefully cheap)

    Eto’o (around) 25 mil
    Hargreaves 19 mil

    OUT

    Saha - around 9-12 mil
    O’Shea - around 6-8 mil

  39. Tell me why do you wanna see O’Shea out of the team.He is a great utility player and he scored very important goals this year.We need that lucky fellah and hopefuly he ‘ll be a Red for years.

  40. Saha 9-12 Mn…Sorry dude…too much…Every club is not a chelsea to pay that kind of money for a broken down player…..atmost 4 mn…..

  41. [...] Opinion on Giuseppe Rossi is split amongst Man Utd fans. Some consider him to be just the striker we need for next season (I’d be one of them), others are more interested in chasing after Huntelaar, Berbatov, Tevez or the ‘new flavour of the month’, as a comment on SL stated. [...]

  42. [...] Some consider him to be just the striker we need for next season (I’d be one of them), others are more interested in chasing after Huntelaar, Berbatov, Tevez or the ‘new flavour of the month’, as someone stated here earlier.. [...]

  43. I’d like to see Rossi go on loan til Jan with a prem club that will actually play him regularly. Then we would get a better idea. He seems to have potential but still has hardly played in prem. Newcastle were supposed to do taht last year but for some reason didn’t play him even though they had striker crises.

  44. Another two goals for Rossi today for Parma in the first half alone.

  45. A bit of Football Manager - Send Kieran Richardson to West Ham plus 15m and get Tevez. Please.

    Dammit.

  46. I’m too scared to comment on this. Last season I wanted him, we had an opportunity and SAF said he wasn’t interested (regardless of the reasons, SAF said he was never interested in Tevez). I still maintain he is the man, just hoping SAF can see that. For our new formation, I think we should get him instead of another out-and-out winger. SAF’s persistence with this formation indicates that its here to stay for a very long time.

  47. May 14, 2007 De_Roiste

I don’t get the anti-tevez opinions. Yes, maybe he is similar to Rooney in the way he plays, but are you telling me that you don’t want another world class player at Utd because he is too similar to another one?? Tevez and Rooney could easily play together.. I just don’t know what the overall team would look like with both of them in it. Maybe:

    VDS
    Nev Rio Vida Heinze/Evra
    Carrick Hargreaves
    Ronaldo Scholes Tevez
    Rooney

giggs, nani and rossi to interchange with the front 4. I honestly don’t think we need the stereotypical target man with an attacking 4 of that quality.

  48. Agreed - the similar player argument doesn’t hold - yes, you need to acclimatise them to your style of play but other than that, talent is often good enough.

  49. Man Utd’s Essien? I don’t get that. Where’s the similarity? The rest made even less sense.

    Par for the course.

  50. The similarity is in their drive for success.

The similarity is in each player’s ability to motivate the rest of the team.

The similarity is that both players are match-winners.

I put two of the three in the article, the middle point was implied.

Blind comment - par for the course?

  51. May 14, 2007 De_Roiste

The point being made Sid, was that this year the usual suspects were not the driving force for Chelsea. Lampard was not as good as last season, in terms of influence on a game, but popped up with his usual goal haul. Terry was out for a long period. Yes Drogba had a fantastic season. But for me, Essien and Carvalho were the rocks for Chelsea. Essien proved why he was so coveted when moving from Lyon. Last year, he was settling in. But when the chips were down this year and the team needed to be driven on, it was him that did it. Tevez did the same for West Ham. That’s the similarity that Ahmed relating to. It has nothing to do with the fact that they are different types of players and play in different positions.

  52. i think when they mean utd’s essien they mean, his versatitlity to utd, will be like essiens to chelsea, ferguson always talked about the player to unlock europe, tevez could easily be that man.

  53. one things for sure, 1 team is going to be laughing this summer, when they sign tevez for peanuts and end up trippling their investment, when they sell him in 3 years time.

  54. Well, I think Huntelar is an absolute must. In addition, if we can get Tevez, then great. Tevez and Rooney can then play as attacking mids with Huntelar up front. Then we get to play three of Cristiano, Giggs, Scholes and Hargreaves with Carrick, Fletcher and maybe Eagles an option too. Defend with Rio, Vidic, Bale, Neville and one of Heinze, Evra and Wes Brown.

  55. ahmed, just read that nani had signed a new contract with sporting which upped his transfer buy out at abt 30million? crap! if this kid really wanted to sign for MU, then he shud not had signed it, thus pricing himself out! nuts! and fernandes is said to want to stay in EPL! so fergie, get him!

  56. Kienu - it would be good if you mentioned your source as well.

    One, i’ve read that it’s 20m and not 30m.

Two, there’s no confirmed source of the new contract or the buy out clause, so i’m treating the buyout clause as speculation for now.

  57. has been confirmed by tevez agent that buy out is 30m he will not sign for united that is fact from the mouth of SAF himself at uniteds hotel last night

  58. rooney tevez partnership wud be amazing.

  59. May 22, 2007 jayjay obircha

i fell utd need a few players not just stikers…players i have in mind are as folows….deigo ribas (lm)

  60. well tevez to manu wud be gr8. add rooney and ronaldo u have a cracker of a 433 line up.but id rather have a bit of flair in berbatov..coz if u do want a fghter up front, who better than rooney himself!!!

  61. id love to see a free kick specialist ao Ot..i mean..lets face it ..ronaldo is sick at taking them…id love pedersen at manu!
