Terry Venables would be mad to take the Newcastle job
Tel 'em where to go
When you have Terry Venables’ wealth of experience and expertise as a coach, you can pick and choose your jobs a little more freely than most people. Perhaps he is eager to get back into the game after leaving the England set-up with Steve McClaren, and maybe he is looking for a real challenge to get his teeth into, but is it really the Newcastle United hot seat he wants?
Apparently he is giving the offer of a caretaker job at St James’ Park careful consideration and is tempted to take up the offer. This would suggest that he backs his management skills to the hilt since Newcastle are currently in freefall and riddled with dressing room divisions.
London-born El Tel might like to ask himself whether he would be able to win over the fans who seem to already believe the club has been overrun by a ‘Cockney Mafia’. Even putting geography aside, Venables’ appointment would be made by the deadly duo of Dennis Wise and Tony Jimenez. Those are not the right links to have at the moment.
Even if he does somehow manage to do a half-decent job, there are no guarantees that he will be given the job on a permanent basis. The Magpies are in turmoil - without a manager and up for sale. Potential buyers are already making promises about bringing Kevin Keegan back to the club and others will have their own ideas as to who should be in charge.
Do you think Terry Venables can ’steady the ship’ at Newcastle and get the team into a winning habit?

I think Newcastle would be mad to take Venables…
then again, looking at their current state - 20k crowd at a home game against Spurs, losing that game, downward spiral, etc etc - Venables isn’t that bad in comparison.
“riddled with dressing room divisions.”
Eh? This is a new one on me? Makey uppy time is it?
The “Cockney Mafia” that you refer to is aimed at Ashley, Wise, Llambias etc and is not meant to show any kind of hatred to Cockneys in general-but then again, you all know that to be the case, it’s just press sensationalism again.
On the Venables issue, put yourself in his shoes-if you were 65 and someone said here’s ££££££££ for a few weeks work then you can be on your way again-would you consider yourself to be “Mad” to accept it? after all that’s exactly what it is-a few weeks work, it’s not like he’s going to take the job permanently.
Terry Venables is well respected in the Football world and where he was born would make no difference to the Newcastle fans.
@Tony:
How is it “press sensationalism” to report the ‘Cockney Mafia’ element of the protests? Is it not fair to assume that there is some level of dislike of Londoners, or southerners generally, as a result? Otherwise, why choose to highlight the fact that the subject of the protests are from London?
So which club is in the worst situation? Spurs or Newcatle?
It has to be Newcastle as Spurs do not have board room problems.
But i say get Souness back and just maybe we might see some potential investors coming in.
