An employee chooses to stay in a low-paying job with a small company with medium growth prospects, turning down a higher-paying job in a bigger firm with better chances of success.

What do you suppose were the reasons behind his choice?

The chance of a bigger move to a bigger company later in the future instead of moving to a company who had risk attached to their success (i.e. long-term ambition)? The fact that his family didn’t want to move so soon after moving to the area just last year (personal)? Or the fact that the company offered him a pay raise to improve his standing in the company (financial)?

Or do you think that he turned down a better-paying job at a bigger firm because he felt that he ‘owed’ something to his current organisation, one that he had joined just an year ago and has no national or familial binds to?

Think about it for a second - career moves are always made with one big target in mind - success. Success can be defined in different ways for different careers but nowhere is it defined as deliberately refusing the chance to earn more money while doing *less* of what you’re doing right now.

Except maybe in football, and that too by football fans.

Ferrie Bodde confirms stay at Swansea City

I have respect for Roberto Martinez - he led Swansea City to the Championship in his first season in charge, and under his stewardship the Welsh club will be aiming to challenge for the playoffs this coming season. However, to claim that Ferrie Bodde chose ‘football’ over money or ‘the club’ over his own career is spin designed to placate mindless fans, and it’ll do exactly that.

Bodde stays because he knows that if he does well this season he can get a jump to a bigger team in a bigger league than Derby and the Championship. Jumping season after season from one club to another rarely helps one’s career and the fact that he signed a new contract (more money) confirms that Bodde’s first priority, like that of all other footballers, is their own career.

The life of a footballer is a short one - he’s got to make the most of it. Props to Bodde for making the right decision in not jumping ship to Derby, but expect him to move on from Swansea City in a couple of seasons if a big club come calling / if Swansea get relegated.
