Should Milner, Ferdinand and Berbatov be criticised for wanting to move?

Anton Ferdinand jumped ship from West Ham to Sunderland this week. James Milner turned in a transfer request at Newcastle United, presumably so Aston Villa can snap him up before the transfer window ends. Dimitar Berbatov is reported to be holding ‘crisis talks’ with Tottenham officials who themselves are waiting for Pavlyuchenko to sign (or maybe someone else as well) before letting the Bulgarian head to Manchester United.

Why are they leaving? Is it for the money or is it for the chance of success?

Premier League Round 2 Winners and Losers - Chelsea and Liverpool stay perfect, Arsenal and Tottenham disappoint

There’s still one more fixture left to be played in the second round of Premier League fixtures, but it’s time to take an early look at the winners and losers from the weekend’s action.

Chelsea and Liverpool have gotten their title challenges off by taking maximum points from their first two league ties and are assured of sitting atop the table at the end of Monday night, but they aren’t the only ones with a reason to feel good as a new week commences.

However, things are not nearly as rosy for some other sides, who have a little something to say for themselves after the weekend.

We’ve moving towards the last week of the transfer window, and there are still some transfer sagas yet to be resolved. While there’s little new news on any of them in today’s roundup, there is a fair amount to report on, with the Premier League and Serie A stealing all of the headlines today.

Football Rivals You Love To Hate

I hate Liverpool and I hate Liverpool fans. This isn’t to say that I don’t have a mate or two who is afflicted with Liverpool support and this isn’t to say that as a rule I believe all individual Liverpool fans are scum of the earth, but I can guarantee the image of thousands of scousers bellowing out ‘You’ll never walk alone’ is always enough to turn my stomach.

Whatever the press say about ‘the top 4′, I don’t regard Liverpool as our title rivals and haven’t done for some time. It has been eighteen years since their last league-winning season and in that time they have finished above us twice (1991, 2002). Arsenal and Chelsea have been our title rivals over the past 10 years or so, yet my feelings of dislike for them are incomparable to what I feel for Liverpool. That is proper rivalry.

Weekend Predictions: Liverpool, Arsenal, Man Utd and Newcastle to win, Tottenham, West Ham, Everton and Man City won’t

The Olympic Games have been a real disappointment. The only event that I was desperate to watch was the diving, but it turned out to be a few lunatics jumping into a pool.

My tissues did come in handy when Paula Radcliffe limped over the line in the marathon - that was pure comedy gold.

Britain has tasted success in the fringe ‘sports’, but we never even competed in the sprinting. We should have told Rio Ferdinand that a drug test was imminent.

Bentley v Beckham - which David would you pick for England?

England play the Czech Republic today in their last ‘friendly’ before the World Cup 2010 qualifiers begin.

The time for experimentation is over and the team you’ll see lining up for England tonight will in all likelihood be 80-90 percent the same as the one set to line up against Andorra and Croatia in September (see all England qualifying fixtures here).

You know the players - if you were Fabio Capello, who would you pick as the right-sided midfielder for England tonight: David Beckham or David Bentley?

Tell us who and why in the comments.

Transfer deadline extended - more time For Berbatov, Barry and the rest

The Premier League has confirmed the first transfer deadline of the season has been extended until 1 September.

The window is scheduled to close 24 hours earlier but, following normal league guidelines, it has been put back because August 31 falls on a Sunday.

The move has been agreed between the Premier League, Football League and Football Association.

Once the deadline passes, teams will then have to wait until January 2009 to sign players from other clubs.

Glory Fans - Not So Bad After All?

As a child, the summer holidays brought about a family trip to a campsite in Europe. We’d get in the car to travel down to Dover and I would always be wearing my United shirt. After hours and hours of driving, we’d pull in at our designated tin can and the holiday had begun.

It wouldn’t be long before I started mixing with other kids, mainly English, who I’d bump in to at the pool or the kids club. These times were my first insights to what a hugely popular and unpopular club Manchester United were.

Is it time to panic yet?

The first weekend of the 08/09 season saw Tottenham lose away to Middlesbrough, Manchester United held to a draw at home to Newcastle, Portsmouth destroyed in a game that will be as remembered for Chelsea’s tactical superiority as the lack of effort from Pompey players and Everton lose at home to a Blackburn side that has lost 2 of its best players over the summer (see all results here).

Shocking, shocking results. United have thrown away the title, Pompey will join Everton in a relegation scrap and Tottenham will probably join them once Berbatov refuses to come back from Bulgaria. It’s the end of the world as we know it….

Everton and Middlesbrough suffered from bad referee decisions

The 2008-09 Premier League season kicks-off with the Right Result team back in action and as always there were some big talking points.

Everton were familiar subjects of Right Result judgments last season and the Toffees are off to an early start this term, being hard-done-by in their encounter with Paul Ince’s Blackburn Rovers outfit. Once again, the panel rules in favour of the Toffees as Blackburn Rovers’ last-gasp winner at Goodison Park should not have counted due to Ryan Nelsen being in an offside position.

Right Result: Everton 2-2 Blackburn

Wenger: Arsenal not like Chelsea, better than Tottenham and Liverpool

Wenger’s position at Arsenal has been over the years an object of respect, envy and curiosity. How does he get them playing so well so young? How can they keep winning even with a threadbare squad? How come he’s not out of a job yet?

More and more people are asking that last question in recent years as Arsenal haven’t won the league title in the last four seasons. In a culture where winners are glorified and everyone else is looked down on, and in a league where managers are fired on a regular basis for missing their targets by an inch, Wenger isn’t concerned.

What are Spurs, United and Berbatov dreaming of?

Dimitar Berbatov has taken over from Cristiano Ronaldo as the ‘big’ story of the transfer window, and last week there were a flurry of news reports claiming that Berba was ‘on his way’ to Old Trafford and would line up for the Red Devils on Sunday.

All of them false - unfortunately so for Manchester United who were missing Tevez (the striker returned to Argentina for family reasons) and could have used a ‘fit’ striker to get them the winning goal. Not that Berba did a load of good sitting on Tottenham’s bench or playing for them as a sub - Spurs lost their opening day game as well - and Ramos will need to start winning games like Middlesbrough away if Spurs are to challenge for the Champions League.

And today we have reports that include a ready-made headline quote from Berbatov: “I’m now in Tottenham but no one can disagree with me wanting to follow my dream.”

Dimitar Berbatov’s dream is to win titles (believe it or not) and crucially, he doesn’t believe he can do that with Tottenham. And that leads us to a bunch of interesting questions, such as:

What was Berbatov ‘dreaming of’ when he joined Tottenham? Did he ‘buy’ the hype two years ago or was he positioning himself for a big move by putting himself in the Premier League spotlight?

What are other players at Tottenham ‘dreaming of’? Winning titles? Getting more lucrative contracts? Working hard for a move to a big club? What about Dos Santos and Modric and Bale, three young players who wouldn’t look out of place at one of Europe’s top sides but are gaining valuable time on the pitch, time that they wouldn’t get at a bigger club while they still need to develop?

What are United dreaming of? We know what Ronaldo’s dreaming of, but what about everyone else, especially after winning back-to-back titles? Are they wondering about how their ‘reign’ will end? Are they ready for another 9 months of bloody toil to win a 3rd time?

To their credit, each party has done the right thing in this affair - Tottenham have put a price on Berbatov’s head and are waiting to sign a replacement, which is fair. Berbatov has been training and playing when and as asked, although his head’s not in it. It’ll be interesting to see if Ronaldo’s ‘head’ is in it, although he’s a different type of player and possibly a harder worker than Berbatov in training and on the pitch.

United have made their offer and kept things out of the press - and they haven’t panicked into buying players they don’t need. As an aside, United’s transfer policy in the last few years has been impeccable - every player coming in has slotted in perfectly and helped improve the side.

Hopefully Tottenham can find a replacement for Keane/Berbatov (with the Arshavin move seemingly off for good) soon and by this weekend we have the whole saga resolved. Otherwise it’s another 4-5 months of endless speculation….

Tottenham and Manchester United searching for Berbatov

Where is Dimitar Berbatov?

According to eyewitnesses, he was last seen playing for Tottenham in their opening day defeat at the hands of Middlesbrough. However, an insider at Tottenham Hotspur (who spoke to us on the condition of anonymity) revealed that Spurs are using an ‘exact double’ for Berbatov these days because they just can’t find him.

Newcastle cannot, should not, dare not, sell Owen to Spurs

In some ways Michael Owen has been a liability at St James’ Park - sky-high wages and repetitive injuries, not to mention his burning ambitions to play in Europe and win league titles (no offense but I think he knows that’s not happening with Newcastle this decade) which has created a LOT of speculation around his future.

If you throw in the latest delays over his contract renegotiation, one wouldn’t be surprised if Owen was linked to other clubs every week (which he is).

However, there are 3 very good reasons why he shouldn’t be sold:

Weekend Predictions: Arsenal, Tottenham, Sunderland, Chelsea, United to win, Liverpool, City and Newcastle to lose

Gerry McDonnell returned from his holidays on Thursday - he missed preseason, but we have no hesitation in sticking him straight in the starting lineup for the opening weekend of the Premier League. Let’s hope his ‘re-entry’ into society goes better than Joey Barton’s rehabilitation (or lack thereof).

Everybody tells the occasional white lie. In a drunken bid to appear cool, I once claimed to have slept with over fifty women. My friends are now suspicious about a revised figure of five: luckily, the police can back me up on three cases.

I guess my habit of bending the truth is a result of my parents lying to me from an early age. On one of my frequent early forays into self discovery, my mother warned me that I could go blind - and judging by the state of my bint she may have had a point.

Safe or Not? The 08-09 Manager Sack Race

Last season the manager sack race got a bit ridiculous with many managers under severe pressure and some getting fired despite being backed in the transfer window and a few dismissed without being given a full season to show what they could do at the club.

New owners and heightened expectations (both a product of more money pouring into football) make it more likely for a manager to be fired - which is why the likes of Ferguson and Wenger are rare exceptions.

The 08/09 season will see a few managers get sacked before May 09 and many others come under pressure (we’re seeing it start right now with Curbs, Ince, Hughes, Hodgson and Moyes already under speculation). To paint an accurate picture (and part of our season preview) we’ve rated the 20 Premier League managers on how likely they are to get the sack this season.
