Steven Gerrard
Steven Gerrard is arguably Liverpool’s most famous player of his generation and on talent alone is probably one of the most explosive and determined midfielders you can find in the world today.
He’s been misused for England and recently at Liverpool – his main talents in my view are running the show in midfield alongside a skillful passer like Pirlo who is able to float up and and down the pitch filling the gaps as well as creating opportunities for the rest of the team.
At Liverpool, he has Alonso to do that for him. In England, there’s only Carrick and he’s almost never picked to play alongside Gerrard.
Liverpool captain, Scouser for life and will probably never leave Liverpool, although he might have to if he wants to win the Premiership (then again, who knows?).
L’Équipe’s All-Star Best XI of 2008
It’s that time of the year again. With the days fast approaching December 31, awards for the “Best XI” of 2008 are being handed left and right. Even Soccerlens jumped on the bandwagon (see our “Soccerlens All-Star XI – The Best Footballers of 2008” post). So, while you vote for UEFA’s Team of the Year…
The 2008 Soccerlens All-Star XI – The Best Footballers of 2008
For those of us who are consumed by football every year brings new thrills and disappointments, a million what ifs and if onlys and ultimately a feeling of elation, satisfaction or despair, depending on where our unfailing loyalties lie. Is Gerrard v Lampard Really England’s Biggest Problem Right Now?
The result read England 3, Belarus 1, with Steven Gerrard on the score sheet, and yet like night following day, the pundits were still assessing Capello’s success in dealing with on one of the most tired clichés in Modern Football — Gerrard v. Lampard. That the two cannot play together has been part of journo…
Man in a corner shop nails Liverpool impressions
This guy is superb. Quite why he is making a name for himself as a guy in a hoodie standing in front of a box of Cornflakes and not on the TV we don’t know. He reels off some excellent impressions of Rafa Benitez, Steven “Yeerrrm” Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Michael Owen and Peter Crouch. The…
Who is the right man for England’s right flank?
Aside from the Gerrard/Lampard debate, England’s traditional selection problem has been who to play on the left-wing due to a dearth of decent candidates. The current conundrum is who to play on the right, but the reasons are quite opposite. Fabio Capello has a multitude of options for the right-side of midfield. David Beckham is…
The Eternal Question: Lampard and/or Gerrard?
With enforced absences making their meetings in the England some what fleeting of late, the Steven Gerrard/Frank Lampard debate has reared its ugly head ahead of the Kazakhstan match this weekend. As far as I am concerned the debate should have been over a long time ago. Gerrard and Lampard are undoubtedly England’s two most…
Liverpool’s best formation and form
Soccerlens reader and forum member deridder8 wrote a very interesting article in the forum today – here’s an extract: … After 6 games with 4 wins and 2 draws, I’m still not very convinced about Liverpool’s form this season. It hasn’t been fantastic; they are not winning games like champions. They are SCRAPPING the wins….
Liverpool start without style but at least have 3 points in the bag
Another year, another chance to see whether Liverpool really do have a side capable of prolonging a Premiership challenge beyond the first round of carol singers. And on today’s showing at the Stadium of Light, where Fernando Torres’ 81st minute thunderbolt secured a scarcely deserved three points, it is tempting to conclude that for all…
The Premier League’s Top Clubs May Benefit from England’s Failure
England’s stars may have been watching the European Championships from their living rooms in sadness and disbelief this past summer, but their pain could turn to gain when the new Premier League season gets underway this weekend. After woefully dismal failures against Russia, Macedonia and twice Croatia in their qualifying campaign, the nation’s heroes had…

Paul Merson speaks to Soccerlens about England’s chances in 2010, Alan Shearer, and why any Germany game holds special memories for him. Watching a 40-year-old Paul Merson take to the field a couple of months ago against Scotland Legends you could see, despite his lack of pace, the touch and the vision that saw him…
