Soccerlens TV: Tottenham’s potential CL opponents and all things Jose Mourinho - originally posted on Soccerlens.com

Join celebrated football pundit, author, radio show host and DJ Andy Brassell every Monday on the Soccerlens Show.

In Episode 29, Andy wraps up the European season with a look back at the Champions League final between Bayern Munich and Inter. The perennial Italian champions became Europe’s top dogs again for the first time in 45 years, and Andy looks at the key men behind their triumph.

Jose Mourinho’s Bernabeu triumph was a good curtain raiser for what will be his new place of work. But will he manage to retain the famous stadium’s affection, with not just a tenth European champions title but a stylish brand of football demanded by the club and the public? It’s also safe to anticipate that Barcelona will come back strongly in an attempt to regain their Champions League crown – Andy assesses how their semi-final defeat to Inter may push them on to even greater heights.

Finally, Andy has a look at an exciting Champions League play-off round to kick off next season’s competition. Premier League Tottenham Hotspur could face Sampdoria, Braga or even shock qualifiers Auxerre as they seek to reach the group stages for the first time.

In Episode 28, Andy discusses the clubs who have been attacking their opponents throughout the season have reap their rewards and they are sitting pretty at the top of their respective leagues. Steve McClaren left FC Twente for Wolfsburg after Twente became the Dutch champions.

In the Champions League qualifiers there are a number of interesting names and it will be quite interesting to see which teams will eventually make it to the Champions League next season. Clubs like Tottenham, Sampdoria and Braga are already there in the qualifiers whereas Mallorca has done really well in order to keep up with the top four in Spain. They are just a point behind fourth place Sevilla and it’s all down to the last game that means Champions League or Europa League for both.

The Episode 27 of the show covers the Eredivisie champions FC Twente and their coach, Steve McClaren – who went from a zero to hero after getting Twente a Champions League spot in his first season and helped them become the national champions for the first time since 1926.

Over in Germany, Bayern Munich are becoming the champions with their domestic cup final and the Champions League final coming up. It is their chance of scoring a treble. Speaking of Champions League, Andy moves on to England and France where the race for a Champions League is on like anything.

In England, Tottenham and Manchester City are fighting for the Champions League qualifiers and only a point separates them. Whereas in France, Lyon are two points behind Lille, who are sitting on the Champions League qualifiers spot at the moment.

In Episode 26, Andy Brassell talks about the second legs of the semifinals of Europe’s biggest and second biggest club competition – a.k.a. the Champions League and the Europa League.

Inter Milan and Bayern Munich have marched on to the finals defeating Barcelona and Lyon respectively. On the other hand, Atletico Madrid and Fulham defeat Liverpool and Hamburg SV to land a place in the final. Of course we all know, Inter and Bayern will play the Champions League final and Atletico and Fulham will play the Europa League final.

Andy talks about the heroics of the Inter Milan squad who defended their 3-1 lead from the first leg really well and how Ivica Olic’s second leg hat-trick in the Lyon home ground helped Bayern cruise through. In the second tier of Europe, Atletico Madrid lost 2-1 at Anfield but they got the all important away goal after going 2-0 down in the extra time.

Then Andy takes the discussion over to Portugal where Benfica has created a six point difference between themselves and second place Braga with just three games to go. Unless there is a catastrophic upset, Benfica are set to win the title with ease.

Whereas the Icelandic volcanic ash has affected the travelling semifinalists of the Champions League – namely: Barcelona and Lyon.
In Episode 24, Andy kicks the show off with the Bernabeu leg of the El Clasico where Barcelona again proved their class again by defeating Real Madrid fourth time in a row in the most important match in Spain. Andy talks about Lionel Messi, of course, and what could be done in Madrid to turn the tide around.

Moreover, Andy talks about Ligue 1 and Serie A. In France, Marseille has finally taken the lead with a game in hand after a very tight few weeks. Bordeaux on the other hand has dropped to fifth with two games in hand – they were also knocked out of the Champions League by their fierce rivals Lyon, who sits on third.

This week’s show is wrapped up by Andy talking about AS Roma’s progress in Italy and how Daniele De Rossi and Mirko Vucinic has played a vital part in their 23 game undefeated streak.

In Episode 22, Andy starts off with the German Bundesliga. Schalke 04 have slipped passed Bayern Munich after Stuttgart beat Bayern 2-1 on their home ground and Schalke beat Bayer Leverkusen. Schalke haven’t won the title since 1958. They came close a couple of times after that but they just couldn’t hold on to the top position until the finish line.

Following up, Andy talks about the most anticipated Champions League match this midweek: Arsenal vs. Barcelona. One claims to play the most beautiful football in the world, the other out-played the whole world last season with their beautiful football. With Zlatan Ibrahimovic scoring three goals in his last three games and Nicklas Bendtner scoring a hat-trick even with quite a poor performance, we are in for a great game.

Andy wraps up the show with action in the Italian Serie A. Inter Milan can not relax anymore in the league as AS Roma are hot on their tail after beating them at Stadio Olimpico. Roma is now only one point behind the leaders Inter with AC Milan two points behind Roma.
