How have the summer transfers fared for the top Premiership clubs?
Greetings folks! My country is dressed with the colours of the rainbow this festive season as there seem to be fireworks in the sky, and on the field. Pun unintended.
This is my first article in close to a month courtesy a deadly mosquito bite that almost cost me my life. But glory be, here I am to
lay down my views and such on the world’s most popular sport (off the bed).
The season is 2 months old now — Half way from the next transfer window opening – and the time seems ripe to judge who made the right buys, who spent a lot on another failure, and who is ruing the departure of a former player.
Chelsea
Transfer talks don’t sound right if we don’t start with Chelsea. The Londoners as expected, splashed out millions and millions — enough money probably to buy a country or two.
Their imports were extravagant in both Shevchenko and Ballack. I always felt Sheva wouldn’t do exceptionally in the premiership given how physical it is. Not at his age at least. So far he has lived up to my expectations. Nothing exceptional, except some heart stopping runs here and there. He will improve, but doesn’t seem likely to meet the standards he set in Italy.
Ballack on the other hand seems to be thriving in all the pounds he has earned and what I thought was going to be the Londoners most difficult challenge this season — keeping Lampard and Ballack together in the same line-up – didn’t look that difficult a job for Jose.
Salomon Kalou has been a wicked buy. Obi Mikel, hasn’t really delivered given all the hype. But he hasn’t really even had any time
to prove himself. I shall reserve my judgment for a later date.
And how can talks of Chelsea be complete without delving into the Cashley — Gallas saga. Both the players are doing as well in the
Premiership as they always were, only wearing different colours. Ashley Cole got some amount of attention after the transfer while
Gallas got more than enough before the 31st of August. This story can truly be reviewed and revered come the 5th of May 2007 when these two sides go head to head at the Emirates Stadium in part 2 of this London Derby.
Eidur Gudjohnsen left for the bench of Spanish Giants Barcelona after being linked with Manchester United.
Robert Huth’s and Hernan Crespo’s departure doesn’t seem to hurt Chelsea too much and neither does Damien Duff’s. Lastly Khaled
Boulharouz is at best worthy of a ‘Decent Player’ tag.
All in all: A (just because they got Sheva to the Premiership)
Arsenal
Enough said about William Gallas, Arsenal’s other big buys this season have been Julio ‘The Beast’ Baptista and Tomas Rosicky. The
Czech youngster has been beyond impressive in the middle. His petite size might be a disadvantage now, but given a couple of seasons in the Premiership he will get tougher and only better as an attacking midfielder.
Baptista on the other hand has no problem with his physique. He is doing well at the London club and Arsenal finally seem to be gelling well as a team (about friggin’ time one might add).
Jose Antonio Reyes was never exceptional with the Gunners and isn’t missed much either. Robert Pires though would definitely have been missed at the start of the season but with Rosicky’s impressive performances, he might just be a long lost memory by January (hey, it rhymes!)
All in All: A (Gallas + Rosicky = Excellent buys)
West Ham United
The transfer swoop of the season. No one could believe what they read/saw/heard when they found out that Argentine duo Carlitos Tevez and Javier Mascherano were on their way to Upton Park.
However, West Ham are struggling in the League, out of the Carling and Uefa Cups and have a manager who might be polishing his resume. In my opinion, these buys were wrongly timed by West Ham. They had an excellent team going. Looking to improve, which every club must do, they bought two over-hyped players in the hope to make an impact in Europe but have failed to deliver. I haven’t seen much of Mascherano so I won’t comment, but Tevez has done everything right for the Hammers except find the back of the net. He will thrive at a bigger club, and will be out of West Ham in a few seasons.
All in All: B- (I’m being gracious here!)
Newcastle United
The Toons have bought and sold a host of players. One of the most impressive performers so far had been Damien Duff. I’m a big fan of the winger and he is as dedicated as ever for Newcastle. Obafemi Martins is a great buy from Internazionale and will be a difference maker as far as Europe is concerned. Other worthy mentions are A. Sibierski who has done well in the Uefa Cup and Giuseppe Rossi who has already banged in a goal in his first start. Things are looking up for the Tyneside giants
All in All: B (Newcastle looks like it’ll end its cup drought courtesy their new recruits. Much the same as far as their yearly transfers are concerned)
Liverpool
The Merseyside Big Guns have made more advances to becoming a Spanish team with winger Mark Gonzalez (born in South Africa, he is Chilean, I know… but seriously, Liverpool will soon be a part of La Liga). After some worries in the strike force, reinforcements were bought in the form of Irishman Craig Bellamy and Dutch superstar Dirk Kuyt whose pace is troubling most defenses in the Premiership. Jermaine Pennant was a wicked snatch from Birmingham City and the winger is thriving at Anfield.
As far as the departed are concerned, the only thing missed about Djibril Cisse is his hairstyle. Djimi Traore served the club as best
as he could but won’t be missed a lot as is the case with Dietmar Hamman. Cinema — Pong goal is an already forgotten Red.
Liverpool have other worries within the club. The club needs a midfield makeover. Not in terms of buying players, in terms of
positioning players. The fans seem content with Rafa Benitez’s side.
Given, he has delivered two trophies in two years (one which is the biggest of them all), but this is a massive club. One huge victory among a few draws and defeats is unacceptable.
All in All: B+ (Just on the basis of the performance of their new recruits)
Tottenham Hotspurs
Sounds of cha-ching could be heard till the Seven Sister’s tube station when news came that Michael Carrick has made his way to Old Trafford. Martin Jol wasn’t much too happy to lose the youngster who held his team together last year but bought a few players who combined made up for the loss of Manchester United’s new number 16.
Didier Zokora was bought as the replacement for Carrick; the strike force was strengthened by adding Dimitar Berbatov who still is to make his impact on the Premiership. Assou-Ekotto seems like another Sissoko, I mean headless chicken. Mido is hardly a new buy after having been a regular already with the Spurs.
The best buys for the Spurs however this season have been Frenchmen Steed Malbranque and Left-Back Pascal Chimbonda. Both of them have experience in the Premiership and this team looks set to challenge for a place in Europe on a regular basis.
After a very shaky start to the season, the Londoners haven’t lost a game since their 3-0 hammering at Anfield last month.
All in All: A (Despite losing their brightest midfield prospect)
Manchester United
The summer was agonizing for most United fans. One year later, we still seem to be searching for a replacement for Roy Keane. Though Carrick has donned the number 16 jersey, he is far from the Roy Keane that got us to the 1999 European Champions Cup! However, the table doesn’t lie.
United is right on top, has won each game in Europe and Carrick has been a regular in the squad so he is contributing for sure. I’m sorry Michael, we expect a lot from our players.
The only other man to find a new locker at Old Trafford this year has been Polish stopper Tomasz Kuszczak. He is yet to keep a clean sheet for the first team but has looked more than promising so far. His first game was against Arsenal and he lived up to the pressure with a fantastic save against Gilberto.
But the biggest transfer saga of the season was that of Ruud van Nistelrooy. After all the controversy and hype, he finally went to Real Madrid and has been doing quite well for Los Galacticos. So far, the decision to sell him seems justified with Saha banging in the goals on a regular basis.
All in All: B (This was a tough one. Fans wanted to see a lot of players being bought — Owen Hargreaves, Fernando Torres, Riquelme, etc… to name a few. However, the new recruits are performing so far and the departed aren’t missed too much)
Other worthy mentions are Silian Petrov (Celtic to Aston Villa), Nwanko Kanu (WBA to Portsmouth), Jonathan Woodgate (Real Madrid to Boro) and Andy Johnson (Welcome back to where you really belong, brother! Crystal Palace to Everton) – Martin O’Neill looks like he is here to stay after having a brilliant start with Aston Villa. I know he’s not a transfer but a new face nonetheless.
The January window is much awaited now. Chelsea will be looking for a good keeper on loan, United still searching to fill the Roy Voyd. Arsenal will be looking to invest in any 17 year old who can dance with the ball at his feet, Liverpool for some more people from Spain and the Spurs will take more steps in becoming an all — England club (p.s Becks is already being linked)
Viva la Futbol!

Football News 24/7
Talk about grade inflation! Everyone gets an ‘A’ or a ‘B’?
Pedantic point, but I would point out that Bellamy is not Irish.
October 31st, 2006 @ 23:19nice article m8 but bellamy is welsh not irish
October 31st, 2006 @ 23:29I think Portsmouth deserve a mention as well, seeing as they are doing very well at the moment compared to last season. No doubt the acquisition of ‘Calamity’ James and Sol Campbell had something to do with that.
By the way, what’s with “Irishman Craig Bellamy” ?
October 31st, 2006 @ 23:42One can hardly say that with the way Shevchenko has been performing, and Obi Mikel not performing, that Chelsea have had an A season in the transfer market. He’s been decent, at best, and not even Ballack has, as of yet, performed at the standards he regularly did at Bayern. Should have been given a B, in my opinion.
“Dutch superstar Dirk Kuyt”? Haha, don’t make me laugh. Ruud was a superstar. Henry’s a superstar. Ballack’s a superstar. Kuyt is hardly in that bracket. Liverpool, having gone from being second favourites for the title, are at the moment a mid-table outfit, due in no small part to their new signings. Bellamy’s scored what? Two goals? Not even close to the B+ rating you gave them. Get real.
And as for Arsenal, the jury’s still out on that one. “Czech youngster” Rosicky (he’s 26!!!) has been good for part of the season, but curiously disappeared in the period when Arsenal were struggling.Anyone can play well when the team is playing well, but only a special player can lift the team when the going gets tough. To give Arsenal an A on the basis of their season so far is laughable.
In relation to Manchester United’s summer signings, the old adage of “more is less” seems to be the case. Carrick seems to finally be settling in to the team, and have played some fine games as of late. His passing against Bolton was simply breathtaking. Kuszcsak, on his part, played well against Arsenal, and seems a fair signing.
I could go on and on. I really wonder if you have been watching the Prem at all…!
October 31st, 2006 @ 23:52awful article mate
October 31st, 2006 @ 23:53got so many things rong
1. chimbonda a right bak not a left bak
2. bellamy is welsh not irish
3.Baptista hasnt played for Arsenal apart from 3 subs appearances so you cant sya hes been good
4. Jermaine Pennant is awful at liverpool
I hate to be derisive but this article really frustrated me. Most of your judgements seem to be based on the players’ reputation – as already pointed out, Baptista has made no impact at Arsenal, Pennant has been patchy (well… I guess everyone at Anfield is patchy – including Kuyt – given the rotation), Assou-Ekotto has been solid and Malbranque has yet to play (so I have no idea how you can form a judgement on him!). Then, we come to Newcastle: Rossi has been under-used, Martins is reproducing the misfortunes of his short stay at Inter (wonderful physique, exciting runs… poor finishing), Sibierski has done nothing right except for getting two short-distance goals, and there was no defensive cover brought in apart from Mr Babayaro. I would willingly bet you a sum of hundreds of pounds that Newcastle will NOT “end their cup drought”. And lastly… nearly every single one of the players you label a ‘youngster’ is at least 24. It’s just like skysports.com… anyone under the age of 21 is a ‘starlet’. These words should not be inflated so much.
November 1st, 2006 @ 01:36Its Tottenham Hotspur, there is no S on the end of Hotspur! Absolute schoolboy error!
Carrick is hardly a ‘youngster’!
Zakora wasn’t signed as Carricks replacement, as he was signed whilst Carrick was still at the club, to play alongside!
How has Steed Malbranque been 1 of the 2 best signings we’ve made? He hasn’t played a game for us yet!
Pascal Chimbonda is actually a right back, not left back!
3-0 hammering at Liverpool? It was far from a hammering, a very flattering score line, as when we missed an open goal in the 62nd minute it was still 0-0!
Didn’t even read any of the other clubs….
November 1st, 2006 @ 03:43Are you blind, infact have you even seen a Newcastle game this season. Duff has been very very average, Martins has been crap, Sibierski is a stop gap that has done alright in the 2 games he’s played, Rossi is a loan who will be gone by January so I’d hardly call him a transfer.
Things are looking up? Please actually watch us before you comment on us.
And for the love of god, who told you we are called “The Toons” It’s either ‘The Toon’ or ‘The Mags’
November 1st, 2006 @ 04:20Arsenal: A? no way, a B at most. sure on paper there are some good signings but baptista hasnt played, rosicky hasnt made an impact apart from a goal in CL i believe, yes gallas was good deal but are you saying one good player means A? i think not.
Chelsea: rubbish, they can’t be A, you’re grading them on paper coz in practice sheva hasn’t shown it just yet and neither has ballack. i agree in the long term i dont doubt sheva. but this article is how they have fared, sheva hasnt.
West Ham: B?!?!?! have you seen their results lately? Again, this looks graded on paper rather than on results.
Pennant has been thriving when played brijesh. bellamy is welsh yep.
Newcaslte: should be a C as they haven’t been great signings, just ok. Duff has shown quality but sibierski is nothing special and neither is rossi. you wouldnt say either are better than players already in the team e.g dyer and ameobi.
United: A B or is right as Carrick’s just been good, but carried by the excellent scholes and giggs. United’s performance this season is due to their existing players, and sir Alex’s deciison to return to a 4-4-2, nothing to do with carrick.
Tottenham: Maybe a B+. Zokora has been fine, Chimbonda good, Berbatov good, but overall certainly not an A. Malbranque a whole deal.
Liverpool: B+ seems fair. Kuyt isnt pacy, but superstar yes, good goal record in holland and now not bad in england either.
once and for all i’d like to address the liverpool being a spanish team thing, and generaly not english enough.
Gonzales is chilean! not spanish. and heck pennant isnt spanish is he. in liverpools best XI theres carragher, gerrard, crouch. and the likes of pennant n warnock in reserve.
look at arsenal. hoyte? haha.
united- fair enough, rooney carrick scholes rio nev. chelsea? lamps, terry, ashley, with j.c a reserve, no better than liverpool.
Also, i see an anti-sissoko theme here. the lad runs for miles and does the simple stuff well, if not the great stuff. a short pass he can deliver but long range i agree he can’t. its something he must realise so he can be praised as much as makelele who is less effective in gaining possesion, but doesn’t lose it by trying the extravagant.
As for the honourable mentions, surely Blackburn must be included. Nonda and especially McCarthy, fantastic signings! A for sure. Both look like being regular goalscorers, McCarthy in particular looks to be one who could help recreate seasons gone by where there was a battle for topscorer among some quality strikers e.g. henry, nistelrooy and hasselbaink. As a liverpool fan, fingers crossed it’ll be Saha, Henry, McCarthy and Kuyt this time round.
November 1st, 2006 @ 05:13Terrible article, i think that mosquito bite has damaged your brain.
November 1st, 2006 @ 09:33Kuyt.. top scorer?? haha.. hardly mate.. the guys not even close to superstar material… its preety obvious ur judgements r biased.. even the whole sisoko is ‘not dat bad a player thing’.. sisoko is by far an average player… yea sure he has got a decent work rate.. but i can point a dozen other players who have similar or maybe even better work rates.. mate.. except for gerard and prob alonso.. liverpool are just totally overrated…
November 1st, 2006 @ 09:34@Greg
lol
Wow, quite a hammering… Ok… Bellamy is Welsh… My mistake…
Most people seem unhappy with my analyses of the Chelsea and Liverpool(some with everything)… i’m going to avoid the”Hotspurs” has an “s” kind of criticism.
My judgement comes after looking at all the 10 games played… most of which i have seen… especially over the last month.
Since the article was so big, I had to cut out the reasons as to why I have rated certain players highly. So here’s my defense…
I have rated the teams solely on the performance of the new recruits and the inability to fill a void left by a former player. And I’ve been very lenient in my grading because, well, let’s just say we all hated the professor that gave us low grades!
One must understand that players – great or not, take time to adapt at any new club.
Chelsea –
How many teams can succesfully pull off a Lampard and Ballack in the same lineup and make sure they both perform decently?
Ballack has been playing well… Not Great… just well… again… how many matches had he played for Bayern before he was brilliant? Give him some time…
The others… I never said Sheva has been great… Every BIG club needs at least 2 if not 3 top players at every position. And Chelsea brought excellent players in both Boulharouz and Kalou, the later having started a few games as well…
Liverpool
If you feel Pennant hasn’t been performing, please watch the times he has played… He has been good if not very good whenever presented the ball. Given the fact that he had to gel into a team which doesn’t have a regular starting 11 and immediately adapt to a different style of play, I doubt he could have performed better.
Kuyt… I never said he would be top scorer… He has been good.. but lacks delivery from the middle…
West Ham
I gave them a B-… the worst grade… why judge me on that?
Tottenham
3-0 is a hammering, for any top club… If you think you’re squad did well, so be it.
And Zokora is said to be a replacement… not by me… but by quite some many experts…
Steed Malbranque played very well for Fulham while he was there… He made it to the top 50 of the all time best European players in the EPL… I think his performances will continue to be impressive when he plays for the Spurs… I never said he has been excellent this season or anything… just said he’s a good buy… if not great… time will tell
I must admit I’ve only seen repeats of Arsenal games and not completely… the patches in which I saw Baptista… he was alright… Judgement on him has been on the basis of previous performances i admit… Apologies…
I hope my reply was satisfactory…
November 1st, 2006 @ 12:19I think that is the worst article i have ever read on Soccerlens. Everyone gets an A or B ? Other than the obvious mistakes pointed out above about Chimbonda being right back and not left and Bellamy welsh not irish, your assesment of players is nonsense. Shevchenko has scored 2 goal in 2 months and they bought him for 35 million pounds, kanu cost literally peanuts and he has banged in about 6. Ballack is still finding his feet and is improving but no where near what he is capable of, but i still think he will improve. Ashely cole has been shit since he left. The defensive system just doesnt let him show his skill and ability. Chelsea get a B- for me.
Rosicky is simply brilliant and Arsenal were smart to snap him up pre-world cup otherwise his prise would have risen another 10 million pounds. Baptista has done nothing since coming to Arsenal and i dont know how you can possibly say he is settling in well. I think the Gooners definately got the better deal in Gallas. Id give them a B.
West ham may have pulled off a miracle thanks to their soon to be new owner, but tevez and mascherano are completely useless and though no one can be sure of how much West Ham actually got them for, they arnt worth it. There other buy, ghananian paintsil seems to doing a decent job and why they have changed his name from paintsil to pantsil still mystifies me. I give them a C.
Newcastle made some killer buys in Martins and Duff and show they are a club moving forward but Sibierski is the stupidist buy ever, he is shit and has contributed nothing. And the thinking behind getting Rossi and not playing him for more than 15 mins ? And for some reason all Toon managers dont seem to relise the problem is the fucking “world class” defense in Babyaro Bramble Carr and Elliot. Newcastle B.
Liverpool deserve a D for me. Bellamy had a good 12 month spell at Blackburn but other than that has never lived up to his hype for me. Even liverpool, 1 goal in 15 games ? worldclass (irish?) striker my ass. Kuyt is neither worldclass and nor prolific. He is good, but not good enough for a team looking to win the EPL. If newcastle bought him id say killer buy but not Liverpools aspirations. and i dont know if you watch the same Liverpool but Pennant is utter rubbish. He is NO WAY near the quality of SWP Ronaldo and Rosicky, Liverpools opponents.
Spurs have been the worst buying team in a LONG time. Sure they have a sick youth system but martin jol has lost the plot man. Berbatov good buy, not proved anything yet. I dont know why he bought Mido is you have defoe and Keane. Zokora is pretty crap and done nothing for spurs other than win a dubious penalty. Essou ekotto is not a wing back for me. Y P Lee offered them pace movment and crossing, something Essou doesnt. Chimbonda has not been what he was last season and why on earth he bought malbranque when he has lennon routledge(whos never been given the chance) jenas and murphy who can all play that position is mind boggling. id give them a D-.
United have made two quality signings. If you notice he always buys players not in their prime and gets them to play in the poistions he wants and in the way he wants. But since the article is looking at short term, being an honest united supporter id give us a B-, because Carrick gives the ball away way too much and Kuszczak has never kept a clean sheet.
All in all a bullshit article, sadly written by a fellow indian football enthusiast.
November 1st, 2006 @ 13:24The comments are a bit harsh – everyone has their own opinion, although Arjun you really should get the facts right.
A – if you’re a United supporter, please start watching our games! Carrick’s biggest advantage is that he doesn’t misplace passes and doesn’t give the ball away (although he has had 1 or 2 inexplicable spells, like 10 minutes against Bolton)
The keeper’s not always to blame for a lack of clean sheets.
Not defending the two players, both of whom I think still have to realise their potential, but perhaps you are being too harsh. Did you have dreams of Torres and Riquelme playing at Old Trafford too?
November 1st, 2006 @ 20:25No mate i really think Kuszczak and Carrick are going to be superstarts in the years to come and im happy Fergie still has the foresight to make such buys, but the article is in the short run. I have watched every single United game this season, even the slightly embarrissing game agaisnt Crewe, and while Carrick has made some UNBELIEVABLE passes, he does give the ball away a little too much for me. Maybe i was a bit harsh on the writer because its his interpretation but i stand by the assesments. And i still dream of Torres and Riquelme coming and playing in the famous red shirt. Last week i read an article on newsnow.co.uk on how PSG said United had the Ronaldinho deal tied up but lost out because of Kenyons . Add to that the fact that Kenyon also threw away done deals on Robben and Kezman(who before chelsea was the top scorer in whatever league he played in for 4 yrs straight) and joined chelsea after and signed them both infuriates and makes me hate Chelski even more. I recently picked up my old issue of United magazine issued in 2002 and they had an article on future stars linked to Old Trafford and they mention 3 future star players called Ronaldinho, Duff and Hernan Crespo. Can you imagine what life at old trafford would have been had those 3 players joined ?
And i appreciate anyone who is willing to deabte my comments out. Cheers.
November 2nd, 2006 @ 00:50A- i think duff would have been an awesome buy.. under fergies tutelage.. he could hv become giggs heir apparent.. but crespo and ronaldhino.. im not so sure.. ronaldhino is an awesome player.. the best there is right now.. but i im not so sure if he may hv done so well in england.. i could b wrong.. but.. like i said.. look at the amount of south americans who hv flopped in the epl.. its quite a worrying trend.. so mayb a good thing we missed out on him.. again i say.. i would loved to hv seen him in de red shirt but… missing out on him could hv been a blessing in disguise.. crespo on de other couldn’t settle at chlsea.. i think he would hv had de same prob at old trafford… so yea mate.. dats wat i think..
November 2nd, 2006 @ 08:42@ Ahmed
Torres, somewhat… Klaas Jan of Huntelaar most definately.
@ A
I didn’t grade beyond an A or a B(+ n -)… I gave my reasons as to why as well… Said I was wrong in my assesment of Baptista… and everything else.
I hope you can go through that and well, beat at me again! [;)]
November 2nd, 2006 @ 11:08Well hate to bash you again but its NOT klaas jan OF huntelaar (klaas jan huntelaar and jan venegoor OF hesselink) and yea the point is that your grading was too kind. are you seriously telling me spurs deserve an A ? But anyway your entitled to your opinion. And the likelyhood of torres coming to united seems even less likely now that atletico are moving up the table and with players like agerro, petrov, rodriguez, maniche and luccin in the team, they are bound to perform even better. Add to that the fact that torres has been there his entire career and is a loyal servant, i sadly doubt the move. Though the Hargreaves move seems a little more likely now.
November 2nd, 2006 @ 12:01I think that torres will move, lest his career stagnates. He has only to look at other bright spanish footballers who stayed loyal to their club for too long (tamudo, exteberria… raúl even) to realise that Atlético cannot fulfil his ambitions. And this without taking into account that Atlético are notoriously up-and-down.
November 3rd, 2006 @ 01:42Scary thing is yesterday Torres said that he wanted SWP at atletico as the need a winger but when asked if he would move he said only united, chelsea or milan. Some say a swap deal plus cash is on the cards for SWP and Torres. I would really hate to see that happen but its looking more and more likely.
November 3rd, 2006 @ 11:55A- your comment re Ronaldinho, Duff and Crespo…
True United lost out on a couple of good players lately, Ronaldinho, Robben, Mikel, etc, etc. What this shows me is that SAF (and his scouting team) actually have a very good eye for talent. I suppose ‘he’ is like a Cantona himself in that he makes ‘good passes’ and tries the ‘exceptional’ pass every now and then… sometimes it works (and you get a Cantona!!!) and sometimes it does not (you get a Veron???). But, all in all, I’ve learnt that SAF has an excellent eye for talent. If he feels that someone like Requelme does not ‘fit in’ ( I myself am a bit pissed off with this one), then I trust him.
November 6th, 2006 @ 14:30What I can’t understand though is:
Why does the board not support him… if he’s made up his mind that he wants a player, its their job to get him. Why could they not do it as in the cases with Rodaldinho, etc?
