Steven Gerrard back to Anfield? It could happen, as the Guardian reports the former England skipper is in talks with Reds manager Jurgen Klopp over a surprise return to Liverpool.

The Liverpool legend is reportedly considering ending his spell with LA Galaxy early to return to his beloved club as a member of Klopp’s coaching staff.

He has held phone conversations with Klopp over a coaching role at the club, and per Independent, Klopp is convinced that Gerrard will set a high standards of professionalism around Melwood, Liverpool’s training ground.

Gerrard is due to back in the United States for pre-season training on 15 January, but there is a chance of a “formal agreement being brokered”.

Gerrard left Liverpool at the end of last season to join LA Galaxy on an 18-month-contract. It seems, however, he is keen to return to his old club, but the situation is made complicated by Galaxy’s probable demands of a transfer fee, as Gerrard has another left on his contract with the MLS club.

Gerrard is reported to have discussed his future with the LA Galaxy manager Bruce Arena, but Independent reports that Galaxy are currently not willing to sanction a loan deal similar to the one afforded to David Beckham, who went to AC Milan twice on loan during his five-year stint with the MLS club.

Probably the time is right for Gerrard to end his playing career and switch focus to coaching roles. The Reds legend admitted recently that his time on the field is coming to an end.

“It could be my last season as a footballer,” he told LA Galaxy’s website.

“I certainly don’t want to feel like I’m feeling right now come next year. Going on the road, playing on [artificial] turf, playing at altitude, playing in humidity, those are the hurdles that I’ve had to face over the last three months that I wasn’t aware of. Every away game has a different challenge.”

The 35-year-old will take advice from friends and trusted advisors within football before deciding whether it will be right for him to return to Liverpool in a new role.
