Steve Clarke leaving Chelsea for West Ham or Newcastle?

Written by Soccerlens

Steve Clarke leaving Chelsea for West Ham or Newcastle?

Steve Clarke stuck around when Mourinho left, he stayed when Grant came, he stayed when Grant left, he even stayed on when Scolari initially jetted in.

But now, with the most likely job opportunity offered to him being the assistant manager post for a London club not playing in Europe, he hands in his resignation?

It’s not as if West Ham are going to offer significantly more money than Chelsea, so why is Clarke leaving?

Is it Zola’s charm?

Is it because he’s not happy at Chelsea anymore?

Is it because of Scolari?

Is it because of the money?

Is it because Newcastle have approached him for the managerial post?

It’s either Clarke looking for a new challenge or Newcastle approaching him. The Clarke-to-West Ham story sounds good until you consider that he’d be going in the same position, for probably slightly higher wages (and the fact that Chelsea wouldn’t have stepped in to offer him a new contract suggests that they’re open to change in that position as well), to a smaller club.

So what’s it going to be? Clarke to Zola (and West Ham), or Clarke as Newcastle manager?

I don’t see him being offered the Newcastle managers job. Some people are better as a No.2 and I think this applies here.
Chelsea have said they have not accepted his resignation but that’s just talk.

It’s interesting though. All is not well at Chelsea at the management level and I don’t think it ever has been since RA arrived.

Maybe rich interfering owners aren’t the answer after all.

  2. @BD Condell: except that RA doesn’t interfere…
