From Spain: Atletico Madrid to make move for Manchester United’s Javier Hernandez
The Mexican international was the fourth choice striker last season, behind Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck. Hernandez is an out and out striker, which means it is difficult to adapt him elsewhere like Rooney and Welbeck.
According to Spanish newspaper Marca, Atletico Madrid are looking to offer Hernandez an escape route out of England for the talented striker. The 26-year-old touched down in the US on Tuesday as a part of the pre-season tour.
United’s new manager Louis van Gaal remained coy when asked about the striker’s future at the club.
“I have to see if he performs how I want. Now I can only see what he has showed under the guidance of another coach,” Van Gaal said.
“He will arrive this evening and I will meet him, we will train and after that he will perform in a match and then I can say something about that.”
The Marca report claims the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager does not favour Hernandez and is not ready to include him in his plans at Old Trafford next season. Atletico’s sporting director José Luis Pérez Caminero has suggested the La Liga winners’ manager Diego Simeone to find a striker partner for Mario Mandzukic.
The Spanish capital club have set their sights on signing Hernandez to fill in the void left by the departure of David Villa. Meanwhile, Atletico could face competition from Inter Milan. The Serie A club are also willing to sign the Mexican international.
Inter has already signed Nemanja Vidic on a free transfer. The Italian outfit are also in the US for a pre – season tour. The Serbian defender has admitted that Hernandez would be welcomed with open arms at San Siro, but is down to the manager and the club whether they want to sign his former teammate.
“My former partner Hernandez Inter? of these things to deal with managers, then it is clear that Chicharito could use at any club and would be welcomed with open arms,” Vidic told Gazzetta dello Sport.
With United out of the Champions League next season, Van Gaal could offload the striker in the summer transfer window.
