coming back to this article after the second semi-final, it seems that Russia (and Turkey) depended a lot on playing at a raised tempo. Slow the game down, and they lacked the ability to control the game as effectively.

Do you know just upon reading this again, because it really is a joy to read, the Russians remind me of a quote from David O' Leary some years back. He mentioned about playing in a team, I am not sure which English team it was now, but they got an absolute pasting from Spartak Moscow. He said the ball 'never left the floor all night'. That to my mind is the Russian style, but it is somehow quicker with more counter attacking than other European nations.

One of my earliest memories in football was seeing Spartak win 1-0 at Anfield on TV in around 1990/1/2 with a goal from Radchenko I think, and also that win over Blackburn when Batty and Le Saux I think it was had the punch up. But on their day they were a pleasure to watch. Now it is good to see money coming into the Russian game with CSKA and Zenit along with former state teams such as Shakhtar. But in this day in age it has been a delight to see Arshavin emerge, and some others like Pavlychenko (probably spelt wrong) and the left back whose name escapes me.

Wonderfully written, really good stuff. As a fan of Dutch football for many years, I share your thoughts and awe at the past breakthroughs by the small Northern European nation, and stood amazed at Hiddink's brilliant tactics and the Russians' breaking from their conceived character. It will be interesting to see if the Russians can carry on and take the tournament, and usher in a new era of sport not seen since their 1988 loss to the Dutch as the USSR. Again, very beautifully done
