I think the last paragraph or two has got it right - it might sound a bit harsh, but reducing the quality overall by way of compensating clubs who are finding it difficult to manage their spending, it's not fair. The whole idea of football, of having competition and having trophies for the best to win, is that its very heart is in meritocracy, not democracy. While I really do appreciate the arguments about clubs finding it difficult to find money to travel to faraway places, I just feel that it's one of the prices of success - if you can't do that, then manage your money differently, and perhaps play in a lower league where there is more regional football, rather than penalise those who do find a way to meet these costs.

While I can see the atraction in regional football for fans, and while I acknowledge that there are powerful arguments in its favour, I just can't agree with the principle that some clubs should in some way be subsidised at the expense of others because they are not as well placed to meet the costs that are incurred as a result of their achievements. And not just at non-league level - the administration ten point deduction is harsh, but fairer than no penalty at all; and I'm amazed that clubs relegated from the Premiership continue to have a £20million advantage over their rivals over the next two years as a reward for failure.
