Should Gary Neville start ahead of Wes Brown this season?

Should Gary Neville start ahead of Wes Brown this season?

Gary Neville played a full game for the Manchester United reserves this week and along with Mikael Silvestre is considered fit to play a role in the remaining games this season by SAF.

While Silvestre will most probably be used to give Patrice Evra a breather, it is Neville’s return to the fold which is more anticipated and talked about.

Wes Brown, for all his critics and flaws, has been an able deputy at the right-back post and the run in the team has helped him in terms of confidence. He may only be first choice because of a lack of better options, but that will probably change once Neville is deemed fit to start a game.

And this leads us to two questions:

Should Neville get the captaincy when he starts for Manchester United?
Should Neville start ahead of Wes Brown on merit (as opposed to shifting Brown to center-back to cover for Vidic or giving Brown a breather)?

What do you guys think?

  1. I wonder if bringing Neville back into the side after being gone for so long and handing him the captains armband will knock off the balance of the team in terms of communication and just messing with something that seems to be working fine at the moment.

I also don’t know if Neville’s experience outweighs Brown’s pace and ability to get back to position. Speed is an X-factor.

Brown has never cut it for me - when ever we defend poorly, he is almost always the culprit

  3. More than the captaincy, it’s the story of how the defence will handle listening to someone other than Rio after a whole year or so.

Well for me, I think that Neville could probably start or be a sub for a few games and see how he adapts to the faster speed in EPL than in the reserves. As for the captain’s armband, it’s still really SAF’s choice as in how he thinks it is best for team as Neville has to leave for about a year to recuperate. If Neville gets the armband as soon as he comes back, it is really unfair for those who are always been consistent in their games.

Therefore my point is to allow Rio to carry on his captaincy and sees how Neville does before giving him the captaincy for the team.
