Portsmouth FC – New Crest

Written by Ahmed Bilal. Tagged: Portsmouth

Portsmouth FC have overhauled and modernised their club crest into a 3-D version which is more similar to Portsmouth City’s coat of arms and was first used in the match programme for Portsmouth’s last match of the 07/08 season.

The new crest is more striking – the club name is significantly bigger across the top of the crest and the star / moon are more prominent as well. However, the crest lacks in vivid colors and that slight flaw makes it look dull and uninteresting. However, I’m sure that when used on shirts and other stuff it will work out just fine.

Extra credit history:

Throughout Pompey’s history the club has tried several different designs before reverting to the basic gold star and crescent. In the 1950s and 1960s the traditional crest was emblazoned on the shirt in white rather than gold – believed to have been due to white being a cheaper alternative.

In 1980 the club scrapped the original crest and replaced it with a new design. This crest showed a football on top of an anchor, representing the Royal Navy, and a sword, representing the Army.
Another version included a circular version of the star and crescent crest in place of the football. In 1993 the original crest was reinstated and remains to the present day.

The only change since then until today was last year when bosses added ‘Since 1898′ to the badge underneath the club’s name.

  1. I don’t think your picture does the crest credit. The actual colours are not dull but a quite bright azure blue background with a golden star and moon with reflective light highlighting the depth. See the official site: pompeyfc.co.uk for the true crest.
