Sevilla’s Antonio Puerta dies in hosptial
Spain international Antonio Puerta has died after suffering a heart attack in his club side Sevilla’s 4-1 win against Getafe on Saturday.
During the Sevilla-Getafe game
Puerta collapsed after jogging back towards his own goal 35 minutes into the opening league game of the season at the Sanchez Pizjuan on Saturday.
Team mates and medical staff rushed to his side and were seen preventing him from swallowing his tongue as he lost consciousness.
He was able to walk from the pitch but doctors said that he collapsed again in the changing rooms and had to be given cardiac resuscitation before being taken to the Virgen del Rocio hospital.
He was placed in intensive care and doctors said on Tuesday his condition had deteriorated before his death.
Sevilla’s fixtures postponed
Sevilla were due to play AEK Athens in the second leg of a third round Champions League qualifier on Tuesday but the match has been postponed until Monday 3 September.
As a consequence, the league match against Osasuna that was scheduled for next Monday has been postponed.

Horrible news.
Very Sad.
R.I.P
I followed the news about this guy hoping he would pull through. Very Sad news.
RIP
I think he was expecting a kid next month
R.I.P Puerta
Very saddening news, it brings tears to my eyes.
Yes his wife is currently pregnant
Very saddening news indeed, I followed the news from when it happened – thought the signs were good with a walk off the field. So unfair.
RIP Puerta
From Manchester x
Antonio Puerta, Sevilla and Spanish international, died today. It is really sad. He was 22 years old, expecting a son in 1 month. Apparently last Saturday his heart basically stopped working, and he had what were thought to be between 4 and 7 separate heart attacks. The prolonged amount of time his heart was stopped from these attacks deprived the brain of oxigen and led to organ failure and death.
I saw him play several times, he was a nice combination of extreme hard work and good skill, destined to be Spain’s left back for the foreseeable future. This is a huge blow.
Rest in Peace Antonio
Sevilla is mourning Puerta’s death…Greeks mourn the death of 63 people cuz of forest fires.
Next week there’s going to be a game between AEK Athens & Sevilla (postponed because of Puerta’s death). I wonder with what courage will all play in that game….
Very upsetting this is. It brings home alot of things and makes us realise how precious life is. This guy was 22 years old!!
Compared to what has happened it makes football pointless.
The world of soccer is again stunned.
RIP
Rest in peace Antonio.
Young,almmost father,talented,international footballer…
Was there something wrong with his heart?I don’t think doctors would let him play if he had a bad heart…
Maybe there’s something wrong with the dopping-control and the new age of football!(I just could not keep’em in my mouth)
Very sad to see a lad of 22 suffer this way when life just began for him.
Rest in Peace
@Zoe
Greek athletes wore the willow.
Katsouranis appeared with a black aril in Benfica’s match, the greek women’s beach volley team devoted its medals to the victims and greek track-athletes raced with black sign…We’re all very sad here in Greece.I think it’s a motivation for greek athletes and for greek people.
I mean death is roughshod and doesnt’t care if you’re young and strong. You have to fight against your feelings so as to find yourself again.Puerta died beiing 22 and a footballer, but his teammates will fight for him and not for the victory. That’s the proper way of thinking.
Despite my feelings in the last few days,I think these footballers (AEK-Sevilla) will give us happy moments for 90 minutes.
NiKOS- are you implying that doping was involved when you say “dopping”? Sheesh, have some respect for the boy, maybe he was a perfectly clean and healthy living young man, maybe he didn’t have a bad heart, maybe it was just one of those freaks of nature, a tragic calamity nobody could have foreseen.?
Sad sad news, he’ll be sorely missed.
R.I.P
Puerta
you shall be always remembered at Sevilla F.C
Fine player with international pedigree
To antonio!!!
You’ll never walk alone
There is just too much accident these few days..sad for the football!!
Horrific to think something like this can happen to someone so young. RIP Puerta and my thoughts are with your family.
KingofZamunda: I can’t be sure but NiKOS may be referring to the technique of blood doping where red blood cell count is boosted. The technique has been rumoured to have been used by a number of European clubs to improve player fitness. The technique is very difficult to detect and can increase the risk of a heart attack occurring. There are no reports in the media that I have seen suggesting this is the case with Puerta, however there were rumours of it on a message board yesterday.
R.I.P. Antonio Puerta
Heard about it last saturday and hoped he would get better, he’ll be a big loss for Sevilla.
c’mon.. Show some respect.. As far as i know he suffered from some kind of cardiomyopathy.. It’s generally aggrievated on hard physical exercise obviously such as football.. It was a familial disorder n 80% people come with history of heart attack.. N there isn’t any effective screening test.. Maybe some of the things i’ve written r not perfectly true but the thing he suffered was similar.. May his soul rest in peace..
remember marc vivian foe?
Sad. For the player(22 yrs? that young?), for his wife, for his team mates, for football in general. I agree with the bit on cardiomyopathy. Though i think it is Hypertrophic rather than Dilated which can cause sudden death in athletes. Dont know if he was suffering from that. I think a form of screening for such diseases should be made mandatory to prevent further tragedies. We already had Marc vivien Foe, one player called Fefer(not sure about the name) and one player from India and now Puerta………..
RIP.
I had longed to see him in S.Africa come 2010.But he who gives also takes.
Just made me to remember the other tragic death of Marc Viviane Foe of Cameroon.
That is really quite sad, and to think he was having a kid next month is even sader, And only being 22 is amazing, Thats really sad that he died so young, with many years ahead of him. The club should wear black armbands and a special commerative kit or something, Maybe with his Number on left hand side of the kit, wear the heart is. Both teams that are playing should do this.
But, As sad as this moment is it shows two things, Footballers are not miracle-men/superheroes and they tooo, can come to sudden-death as we have seeen here and with Foe, The other is that we realise Football is just a game, Not sounding corny but it is true, Yes we all are passionate about the game and that is good, But for all the millions it costs, For the Stadiums being built, The players being bought and etc. it is just a game, We sometimes forget that lives are more important than some football match, Lives are lost, just like any other thing and we should always think about this, It is, Just a game as we have seeb with Hillsbrough and Heysel, Fans and players dying is just sad, and we forget that people play this game, It is not just a money-making scheme.
Rest In Peace, Extremely Sad News, since he was just 22.
Also, Sorry for the PS but Oppisition fans we’re working up a chant when they played Seville around the death, Something like “At least we don’t kill our players, at least there not weak such and suchs”. To think people could do this to someone is disgusting.
Adieu Atonio, you are so young for this but all things happen at God’s right time.
Sevilla and the entire football lovers world wide will miss you alot.
Adieu Antonio rest in the bossom of God.
it painful to me about his death but may his soul rest in perfect peace

RIP Antonio. Such a tragedy. He was a talented player, his career was on the rise, he got his first cap recently, and he was to become a father next month. So fucking cruel! Life can be so unfair.
not been a good week for football.
This tragedy, Ray Jones killed in a car crash, he was just 18, then last night, Clive Clarke collapsed in the changing rooms and his heart stopped and was rushed to hospital after paramedics had to use a defibrillator to restart his heart.
RIP Antonio and Ray and get better soon Clive.
QPR are also retiring the No. 31 shirt as a tribute to Ray
NiKOS niether of those stories have much to do with the incident. Both are focused on Italian football, the first in almost a decade old while the second mentions a variety of medical issues but NOT heart problems.
JB it’s always the same thing:
a new med giant finds a new way to “hide” the steroids by the tests or new ways to increase the red blood cells. So,new track stars are ready for new records and new football teams make their own “records”.Coaches manage to make super heroes ot of nowhere.Do you remember the BALCO case, kenteris, marion jones?
It’s the same thing in football. If you can hide the wrongful part of your job, which is mortal for your players, then you can succeed.
When a new drug comes out the old ones(drugs and athletes) are useless, cause they can’t make money anymore by using them. So,they call them illegal and suddenly track stars and footballers don’t pass the tests. That’s how the system works.
I am gobsmacked didnt expect this at all.
RIP ANTONIO
I’m from Seville, I’m 22 as he was, and I can tell we’re very sad here for this tragic event. His death has brought all the city together, forgetting the rivality here between our two football clubs (Sevilla and Betis) for the first time in history. It’s very moving seeing the signs of affection people are showing for him and his family. He lived near me and I sometimes saw him taking a walk, everyone could talk to him since he was very nice and pleasant, modest and humane, so was his family, as far as I know; also he was very mature and clever. I didn’t really think this was going to happen when he was able to leave the field almost on his own, and the next 2days when I heard the latest news…it came as a shock to me, very sad. We should show some respect. As far as I know, Anubhav is right; he had an arrithmia in his heart, but no-one could have told it as it was a hidden disease, the first sign was the faint and then the heart attack came. Although he had fainted more than once before, the medical screening he had to pass 14 days before his last match didn’t reveal anything dangerous.
Not only a good footballer, but a wonderful person too.
RIP Antonio,
Descansa en Paz Antonio Puerta, siempre estarás en nuestros corazones.

This is extremely sad.My deepest condolenses go out to him and his family.May this be a wake up call to everyone who is reading this.None of us are guaranteed another day here on earth so make sure that you are ready to meet God.If you meet God as a liar, blapshemer, adulterer, murderer, thief which every one of us has to admitt we have transgressed in at least 1 point then God has to give us justice and the punishment for sin is hell. There is however forgiveness of sins though repentance(Confession of sins to God) and then putting our faith and trust in Jesus CHrist who God put on the cross to deal with and pay the price for our sins because of his grace( Unmeritted favour)
I watched his video at YTube.. Such a young talented player.. Almost cried..
