Manchester United signed two Argentine players this summer – Marcos Rojo and Angel di Maria – joined from Sporting and Real Madrid respectively. The Red Devils were also linked with another Argentine who performed brilliantly at the World Cup in Brazil – goal keeper Sergio Romero.

Romero was also a reported target of Liverpool with reports emerged back in August that the Reds were close to sealing a deal for the Sampdoria goal keeper.

Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, however, claimed that the 20 times Premier League champions Manchester United were also keen to sign him, as manager Louis van Gaal wanted the 27-year-old to serve as a back-up for David de Gea.

The deal didn’t materialise in the end, as it was thought that Romero had rejected a move to join the Red Devils.

Romero says that he never rejected Manchester United as he would be a fool to do so. But, he was happy in Genoa and wanted to play regular football.

Many lies have been told, for example, that I refused the transfer to Manchester United. A crazy thing,” said Romero while speaking to Radio Nacional

Romero has yet to feature for Sampdoria in the league this season, with Sinisa Mihajlovic prefers Viviano and De Costa ahead of him. Although he admits that the situation (lack of games) is becoming difficult for him to accept, but he wants to stay at Sampdoria and prove his manager that he is ready to play week in week out.
