Sepp Blatter calls for a face-saving emergency FIFA session

The official statement from FIFA (released on Monday 23 November 2009) reads something like this:

Due to recent events in the world of football, namely incidents at the play-offs for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™, match control (refereeing) and irregularities in the football betting market, the FIFA President has called an extraordinary meeting of the Executive Committee.

The extraordinary meeting of the Executive Committee will take place in Cape Town on 2 December 2009, starting at 15.00.

Since Ireland won’t get a free pass to the World Cup, and at best Thierry Henry is only likely to cop a small ban (like, you know, take the group stage games off and just play the knockouts), you wonder why Sepp would find it necessary to call a big old meeting.

Most likely we’ll see Sepp push through his plans for extra officials in the World Cup finals, and there may be some announcements to be made regarding the betting investigations.

It’ll all show and tell with FIFA, and the World Cup draw is as good a stage as any to put on a face-saving show.
