Manchester United’s new transfer policy?

Not content with having had his 15 days of fame (as Manchester United’s primary target for a DM), Senna is now telling the world (or at least NOTW) that the actual reason Manchester United didn’t sign him was because their sponsors, AIG, preferred English players.

Apparently, when Marcos Senna’s agent asked Quieroz why his transfer to Manchester United had stalled, this is what happened:

“It went very quiet, then Mr Ferguson’s assistant Carlos Queiroz told my agent he was sorry but they had orders from above.

Queiroz said the sponsor preferred English players and although they wanted me, they would have to wait.

But they never called me back.”

Objectively, I can’t say much about this because all we’ve got is a report from NOTW about a player who is unhappy with losing out at the chance to play in the Premiership with a big club. Manchester United will deny this, laugh it off even.

On one hand it looks like a complaint from a 30-year old, fading player whose time for glory, fame and recognition was snatched away from him - possibly because Manchester United were more interested in signing Hargreaves. On the other hand, you have to allow for the possibility that this might be true (as unsavoury as the thought might be for Manchester United fans) because really strange things tend to happen when money is involved.

The truth could be, as usual, somewhere in between…

And if Manchester United really have a pro-English transfer policy (courtesy of AIG), why haven’t we bought Kevin Nolan yet?

  1. what i think we have here is mis-communication.

While i believe it is quite likely thay United have an English transfer policy, i doubt it is from a sponsor (i think Senna may have ment owner)

Anywho - i’m delighted with that policy in general, i’d like our english club to have an english core, as it always has been. While i do not want our club to become xenophobic and only by english, buying english where possible is something we shoud always look at.

I would never want us to turn down a player like Torres, Tevez or Mascherano because they are not english, but why buy a middle of the road player like Senna, when you can get a promising like Hargreaves who is just as good (if not better) and younger.

  2. It the recent years Ferguson brought a lot of non-English stars, who turned into failures pretty soon. So, I think he just went back to his british-core policy which was very successfull ten years ago. And central midfield is exactly the position where Manchester United needs that british core the most.

  3. well i think this is being made out to be more serious an issue than it is cause may be somewhere down the line sena might fil in the immediate purpose but ferg’s rebuild of the team around young players needed a much younder CDM and so he went in for heargreaves and it was merely a way of keepin the door open for senna if the transfer of heargreaves might fail because united were not goin to get any co-op from oli honess as he has prooved…

  4. Is there not new regulations coming into force this or next season regarding the number of home grown players in European club competitions?

FIFA and UEFA have put in place a law stating that each club must register a certain amount of home grown players in their respective squads.

By not purchasing Senna we can register one of our youngsters bought through the youth system enabling our maximum registration number.

I beleive that we should all think of the betterment of the club, before all other trivial issues like nationalities and age! What kind of world are we living in now, where an insignificant thing like a player’s nationality should affect his acquisition?Marcos Senna(Spanish and is 30 years old) is among the top five holding midfielders in the world, irrespective of his age and nationality! He can hold his own against players like Makalele(who is French by the way and is 34 YEARS OLD!!!)If SAF was so concerned about buying british, why didn’t he go for Hargreaves sooner,or even gone for Scott-Parker at Newcastle!Instead he wasted £18.6 million on Carrick(who will never be in Roy Keane’s class),and now we hear is ready to splash out £17 million on “FRENCH HAS-BEEN” striker David Trezeguet! And to top it all we have people who are condoning our “close to senile” coach’s behaviour! To be fair to anyone, you dont make an offer and leave the person hanging in anticipation without no contact.Personally,I think it’s rude!SAF and co,buy Senna because O’shea is not among the top 20 holding midfielders in the world and we have to play in Europe!
