Saha can score 20 goals, but will Manchester United win the Premiership?

Written by Ahmed Bilal. Tagged: Manchester United

Much is being said about Ferguson’s support of Louis Saha as a 20-goal striker.

I’m inclined to agree with the manager’s assessment - Saha, provided that he can stay free from injury - will be one of Manchester United’s best players in this season.

But will that matter when the final match has been played?

Ruud’s loss means that Manchester United need to find around 30 goals per season from somewhere else (150 goals in 5 years, you do the math). But Saha can easily step up and reach that level. The problem for Manchester United won’t be Saha - it will be the support cast and whether they can score enough goals to help Manchester United win the Premiership?

Solskjaer, if he stays fit, can easily be expected to chip in against the smaller teams and in the domestic clubs. Ditto for Smith. But where Rossi, Smith and Solskjaer will really be needed to perform is in the Champions League and the Premiership, where Manchester United were often found wanting because of a lack of goals.

I think we can do it - score enough goals, that is. After all, we have a better forward line compared to the top teams.

Manchester United vs Liverpool

Rooney is better than Bellamy, Saha is better than Kuyt, Solskjaer is equal to Fowler, Smith is equal to Crouch, and we have Rossi as our trump card plus Ronaldo, while Liverpool have Garcia only.

Manchester United edge Liverpool quite easily here.

Manchester United vs Arsenal

Henry cannot be rivalled, but neither can be Rooney, and this could be the year he starts scoring 20-plus goals. Adebayour is fair not as good as Smith or Solskjaer, Walcott and Rossi are equal in my view, while Saha and van Persie - well, Saha scores more goals, that’s for sure.

Manchester United have a slim advantage over Arsenal, but it is very slim.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

Rooney over Shevchenko, but only slightly. Kalou is very talented but then so is Rossi, while Saha is better than Drogba.

Talking strikers - Manchester United beat Chelsea too.

But will it be enough?

  1. Nope. It’s going to take more than that, as Chelsea have the kind of defensive foundation (and a worldclass keeper) that none of the contenders possess.

  2. This is a joke. Saha better than drogba or Van Peirce, and `rooney better than sheva or even henry… No way!
Of course the biggest problem of Man Un is their midfield. Another year without a trophy for Un.

  3. Hmmm…defensive foundation would be Terry-Gallas-Carvalho in defence, Makelele / Essien in front of them and Cech at the back?

van der Sar, Ferdinand-Brown-Vidic…bring in Hargreaves and we have a ‘defensive foundation’ that matches them - to an extent.

  4. petros - try ‘watching’ the players I’m talking about sometime soon. this season, even.
  5. Brown and Vidic aren’t in the same class as Carvalho and Gallas (both of them have better defensive minds and make Terry look good). Ferdinand/Stam (2 years ago) would’ve been able to match Chelsea’s defence, but not the trio you’ve mentioned.

  6. Carvalho - quality? you’ve got to be kidding me. Brown’s faster, better in the air, and an equal tackler. Gallas, I’ll give, is an excellent defender but then again I don’t think we’ve seen the best of Vidic yet.
  7. Carvalho’s casual with fouling, but is an excellent defender. No escaping from that. And Brown is not as good, let alone better, than Carvalho. Brown’s reading of the game and positional awareness begs for improvement.

  8. I’d say the biggest barrier is Cech. When he’s on form (which is most of the time), he saves shots no one would blame him for if they’d gone in. He makes his defenders, specially Terry, yeah, look really really good. I know he makes the odd mistake - who doesn’t - but he’s among Mourinho’s top three signings, imho.

Though he was decidedly human at the World Cup. Here’s hoping for more of that! :)

Ahmed, I’ve always liked Carvalho, but was really encouraged by Brown’s display yesterday. Rocky, he ain’t that bad, you know? And for a backup centre-back who was more than decent on the right, assuming Silvestre can somehow be kept out of the team, I’d say we’ve got a solid, tidy defence that just needs a good (winning, heh) season together.

  9. haha, you have to keep in mind man utd only have 5 class forwards, whereas, chelsea, liverpool and arsenal have an overabundance in attacking talent, if one of the 5 attackers gets injured, you’re screwed, having to play players like Smith, where chelsea and arsenal can put van persie, adebayor, kalou, etc etc etc.
