Rustu Recber retires from international football

Written by abhilashkmanapatt

Turkish international goalkeeper Rustu Recber announced that he has retired from international football following Turkey’s semifinal defeat against Germany. Rustu has a 14 year career with Turkey and has 119 caps to his name.

The former Fenerbahce ace and 2002 World Cup star, Rustu Recber has finally decided to call it a day. Even though he wasn’t the regular goalkeeper in the recent years, he was asked to step up for the task following the suspension of first choice goalkeeper Volkan Demirel. Rustu led the team against Croatia after Nihat Kahveci was injured.

He had a great day at office against Croatia assisting Senturk’s stoppage time goal in the 122nd minute and saving a penalty kick in the shoot outs enabling Turkey to progress to their first ever Euro Championship semifinals.

Rustu Recber has four Turkish Super League titles with Fenerbahce and when asked he said his performance in the World Cup 2002 was his best.

He was the most impressive goal keeper in that tournament helping Turkey to finish third. He made his switch to Barcelona after that. The 35-year old currently plays for Besiktas.
