Roy Keane - Sunderland to Premiership, then Manchester United?

Written by Ed Harrison. Tagged: Roy Keane - Sunderland

In Roy Keane’s first season as manager he now has the opportunity to get Sunderland promoted - after he took over the team in late August from Chairman Niall Quinn - following four successive league defeats.

Since that time Keane has had no problem attracting new players to play for him and has recruited twelve players in August and January.

Sunderland are surging up the league right now having won six of their last eight league games – drawing the other two. On Saturday they beat the leaders Derby County by two goals to one – with the winner coming in injury time. Right now they are certainly the in-form team and expect them to finish in the top two in the Championship – so a play-off will not be required.

While it’s too early to speculate too much about Roy Keane’s management capabilities - he seems to know what is required from a manager and has tempered some of his harsh ways as a player. Certainly in his interviews he is always interesting and very measured and realistic with his assessments of games and players.

Certainly Keane will not accept anything less than 100% from his players and has already instilled a winning attitude with his players. He has also been left to his own ways by Chairman Niall Quinn who has backed him fully in the transfer market. The partnership looks like it could be very successful for Sunderland in the foreseeable future.

Many Sunderland fans are very wary of being promoted too early (given what happened last season) but Keane will attract a lot of good players if they do get promoted and you can bet that Quinn and the board will back him to the hilt in the transfer market if promotion should happen.

Roy Keane may well be on his way to emulating the managers he played for – Alex Ferguson and Brian Clough – only time will tell – but if he comes anywhere near the success of those two - he will be a top manager.

Editor: I wonder how fans will view the possibility of Roy Keane managing Manchester United

  1. Roy has always been a great sportsman and a leader too.Now that he is a manager he is more than capable of leading an average/top budget team into promotion.
Winning the Championship should be more than quality. It ’s not just the tactics or the smartly won games. As you said,he made them wanting to score and win more than anything else(night, drink,f***,do they really know what it means?).And they are just a bunch of reserve-no-use-talented players. They really control and pass the ball with no fear and win the ball when it matters.
Maturity and passion for the game.Isn’t it a Fergie-style management?Young players with balls and talent. So, Roy to Manchester; WHY NOT?
(Eitherwise Sir Alex has never been the wise tactics-based coach. It ’s Quieroz having this mission accomplished for him.)

  2. he needs at least 5 years managing exp before he can manage a side like man u

and alex wont still be at man u in 5 years

therefore he wont be the next united manager

nostalgia is a great thing tho eh?

  3. THERES ONLY ONE KEANO THERES ONLY ONE KEANO

  4. It is too early in Roy Keane’s managerial career to determine whether he is worthy of the Manchester United hotseat.

He certainly has shown that he has the potential in the way he has turned Sunderland’s fortunes around with some shrewd signings and getting the best out of players who were already at the club.

Only time will tell!! Only time will tell!!

  5. I think he will be great for ManU. ManU need someone who knows what the club is all about and should be able to run with things for the next 20 years. Keane fits the bill perfectly. Given a year or two, I think he should be given the same change that the Alex Furgeson was once given.

My first choice for SAF’s replacement is still Mourinho however (providing he can get results by playing more attractive football). Main reason for this is that he seems to have this special quality of bringing the best out of ordinary players (Lampard, etc). I see him as the type of manager that can make stars out of nobodies. This goes in line with ManU’s traditional policy. To have someone like that is truly a goldmine. Can generate lots of money in player sales. Nevermind the titles…

  6. Karl - I’m not sure Mourhino would be good for ManU. No doubt he’s a great coach and motivator (and good for the game) but I think he brings just too much notoriety to Chelsea - think that’s what is upsetting the Russion right now.
Think ManU would not like that type of publicity - that swirls around Chelsea.
  7. keep ur hands off keano… he belongs to Sunderland now !!!

  8. Captain keano for us and manager keano for sunderland has put black cats at championship summit….

The team looks good and seems like they are ready for promotion. And i believe & hope that they will get an automatic qualification.

It will be an emotional time to watch captain Keano face off with Sir Alex.

  9. If he can take a team rock bottom of the table with a month of the season gone to the top of the table with a month to go …….. in his first season in management… I can only imagine Sunderland has the best manager in English football.
