Roy Keane gets Sunderland promoted, should Newcastle fans be worried?

With Derby County losing today to Crystal Palace 2-0 that means that both Birmingham and Sunderland claim the automatic promotion spots to the Premiership.
Congratulations to the Sunderland Football Club, their players, their fans and specifically freshman Chairman Niall Quinn and manager Roy Keane for a fantastic first season at the club.
It’s just great that the Newcastle - Sunderland derbies will be back again next season – there are no bigger derbies anywhere.
It wouldn’t be at all surprising if Sunderland do well next year in the Premiership – since it seems likely that Quinn and Keane will look to improve their squad with multiple signings during the summer – so that not only do they survive in the Premiership – but they actually make a push for a high placing – and why not?
Hopefully, as Newcastle fans we have to hope that will spur Newcastle onto bigger and better things – starting with some quality signings in the summer.
There’s no reason why both Newcastle and Sunderland cannot be successful – it will be excellent for the north-east region – and hopefully this will spur Shepherd and Roeder on - to ensure we get in the right top quality players in the summer - to take Newcastle back up the league – where they belong.
The two of them certainly failed miserably to bring in the right players last summer – that must not happen this time around – we have to assume it will not.

this blog fucking loves sunderland
like you said in the first sentence, both Birmingham and sunderland were promoted. So talk about them also
also roy keane aint the messiah
he got a club that were expecting promotion promoted. WOW
Dan, correction - this blog fucking loves Roy Keane.
I think Ed would have talked about Birmingham but he was doing a piece on Sunderland AND he is talking about it from a Newcastle perspective. That’s his perspective.
As for the last bit - the club was in bad shape before Keane came along, he’s turned them around and turned them from relegation candidates to potential championship winners. That is quite an achievement, considering that it’s his first year in management.
Why the chip on your shoulder, dan?
Of course I expect Newcastle to beat Sunderland everytime.
Probably get some stick for this from Geordie fans - but that’s the truth.
Should have also congratulated Birmingham - but this was initially going up on the Newcastle United site - my error.
In fact - now you mention it - that Geordie lad (and ex ManU star) Steve Bruce has done great - to get them up immediately after relegation.
Maybe first time 2 teams who got relegated have immediately been promoted - not sure (?).
Keep smiling
I remember the hype when Mad Mick brought them up in 2005 with 94 points - just remember what happened next …..
I get the feeling that won’t happen this time around because Keano will ensure Sunderland fight for every last scrap on the field. This team might or might not have more quality than that team you referred to Dave, but they’ll certainly have more spirit and that can make all the difference. Try telling that to Watford though!
Oh everyone in Trinidad & Tobago knows it was all Dwight Yorke and Carlos Edwards who got Sunderland to the Premiership anyway
Hopefully they’ll both be in the team again next season to actually play there.
The difference this time is Quinn will give Keane a sizable amount - around $15M is what has been quoted - think that will be accurate.
Quinn and Keane are reaching for the top - and Keane never does things in half measures.
Good to see there is a calm reaction from a Newcastle standpoint, thanks for the congratulations.
Looking forward to the derby games where we can put up a fight this time around under Keanos leadership.
Congratulations to SAFC. The players, Keano and Quinn totally deserve this.
I know Quinn’s promised a large transfer fund for Keano so it will be interesting to see how the transfer season pans out for them. I think they’ll do all right next season - Keano will probably aim for consolidation in the PL first, before aiming higher, which I’m sure they can do. This Sunderland team has grown more rugged and stubborn - just like Keano and as one BBC article pointed out, they’ve also inherited Man Utd’s tendency to score late, dramatic goals.
It’ll be very entertaining indeed ^^
Sherwin - that goal by Carlos Edwards to seal the 3-2 win was something quite special
Quinn seems to be the perfect chairman - he and Keane are both so positive.
Really think Keane may think twice about eventually leaving Sunderland for ManU - if he is ever offered the job,
In four years Sunderland could be a really top class team….completely created by Keane.
Anyway - it’s a bit of a fairy tale story - good for Sunderland.
Somehow, I doubt that Keane would ever give up the chance to manage United. He’ll go there on his own terms, surely, but Keane not manage United? That sounds too strange to believe.
I’d laugh me knackers off if the toon got shunted off their lowly perch by sunderland…
Roy Keane is perfect great-manager material - kind of like Mourinho with a stanley knife…
Hopefully they could both be in the top six - that would be tremendous - am kind of hoping the phenomenal success at Sunderland will spur Newcastle on.
Hope springs eternal.
Ed, there’s not enough space in the top 6 for all the teams we want to be there
As a Sunderland fan it’s great to see people from a neutral point of view praising the squad and management, and even better to get some praise off the mags!
Any true Newcastle fan wants to see Sunderland in the Premiership and doing well (as I do Newcastle) as it’s what makes the derby the biggest game in football the world over.
With Sir Quinny and King Keane at the helm the sky really is the limit. We have number of decent players now, should be getting a couple more (I’ve heard some delicious rumours regarding Diego Forlan and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but they’re only rumours!) but I have to say that it’ll take years before we can attract big big names like Newcastle have always managed (Owen, Shearer etc). The main thing we have going for us is attitude and togetherness in the squad, much like when we just missed out on Europe two seasons in a row.
We need to keep a level head, not get overly confident and make sure that we have a full house every week to spur the lads on.
Agree with the rest of your sentiments - Sunderland and Newcastle should key off each other for success - was expecting to be blasted by some Magpies fans - but that hasn’t happened (yet).
Nothing better than to have both successful - which is very possible!
I’m not doubting that he has the ability, I just feel that there will be a lot of people who are sceptical of whether or not Sunderland are going to stop being a “yo-yo club”. It’s only once we establish ourselves as a true premiership side that I believe the real big names will start arriving.
People like Dwight Yorke and Stern John are all good, but it’d be nice to get household names that have more than a couple of seasons left in their legs.
AHMED YOU ARE SPOT ON. THE MAGS DO HAVE A CHIP ON THEIR SHOULDERS,IN FACT THEY ARE THE MOST EVENLY BALANCED FANS IN THE COUNTRY, THEY HAVE A CHIP ON BOTH SHOULDERS
