SHOCK! HORROR! Ronaldo signs 5-yr contract for Manchester United at LESS than 140k/wk
Straight from the horse’s mouth:
“Manchester United is delighted to announce that it has agreed terms with Cristiano Ronaldo on a new five year contract keeping him at the club until at least June 2012.
Sir Alex Ferguson said: “It is fantastic news, it emphasises the point that Cristiano is happy here and that he is at the right club.
“He has a great relationship with the team, staff and the fans and he will go on to be one of Manchester United’s great players.”
Cristiano added: “I am delighted. I spoke with Sir Alex and David Gill about my future and everyone knew that I wanted to stay.
“I am very happy at the club and I want to win trophies and hopefully we will do that this season.”"

Can we please get back to the football now?
I can also guarantee that Manchester United are not paying Ronaldo 140k / week. That’s rubbish. To start off with, Ronaldo hasn’t made those demands, that number was pushed by the Guardian – that paragon of virtue who were reporting as late as yesterday that Real Madrid would pay 54m for Ronaldo and that Ronaldo was more than eager to leave Manchester United.
Also, do you seriously think that a club would pay a young player 40k/week more than what they pay their other top stars? You’ve GOT to be kidding me…
Anyway, Ronnie signs the expected contract extension at Manchester United, get’s a pay raise, United pay Mendes as well, everyone’s happy and now, Real Madrid must look elsewhere.
Expect the mainstream media to be extremely disappointed – their biggest story of the summer is now out of the window.
Pour Mourinho – they’re going to descend on him in hordes now.

Yeah lets hope Real and the press go after Jose big-time now.
Well done Ronaldo as well, transfer speculation on the level created by the press has, in the past, been known to make a player take his eye off the ball, Ronaldo has kept focused through out all this rubbish, lets hope that continues till the end of the season.
April 13th, 2007 @ 15:25I AM EXTATIC!!!!
I know this will seem negative of me, but we should note however that this does not mean that Ronaldo will not leave. If any club comes with a big enough offer, I’m sure the Glazers will listen… this just means that United now have better bargaining power over the hottest property in current football. (for reference, check the Owen Hargreaves saga where he also just singed a contract extension).
April 13th, 2007 @ 15:46Karl – Hargreaves signed a contract extension an year before United showed any interest in him…
April 13th, 2007 @ 15:53Ronaldo re-signing is the best news since Cantona signed back in ’92.
Every club needs a HUGE player in order to attract other top talent, we have that in Ronaldo. So maybe the talk of Ronaldo joining a “bigger??” club like Barca (quote.Deco) can now be turned on its head; maybe the agents of players like Deco, Quaresmo, Kaka, etc might be knocking down Gills door to be part of this great era.
Karl – I’m equally ecstatic and believe this really will attract the missing links to finally join – Hargreaves, Torres and (if we all pray together) Kaka.
April 13th, 2007 @ 15:55simonthered – I’ve started praying now
April 13th, 2007 @ 16:03Kleberson was not flashy. His job was to be a DM, not an OM.
April 13th, 2007 @ 16:05Kaka will fit in!!! he has to dammit!!!
If flashy Portugese players can play here, so can flashy Brazilians. United (and possibly Arsenal) don’t play the “English” way. We play with flair and pace. And don’t forget had it not been for Peter Kenyon being an idiot Ronaldinho would have been at United, do you think he’d have flopped.
April 13th, 2007 @ 16:09There is no mention of salery so how would you know if the 140k/wk is not true?
April 13th, 2007 @ 17:50Kleberson was ok, it was Djemba that let him down. Kleberson was injury prone and was often played on the wing. Thats same as fletcher. He wasnt played at the right position. His injuries did not allow hiim to settle down. Otherwise i thought he would have been a good player.
April 13th, 2007 @ 18:47Redondo – because that’s at least 40k/week more than what Rio is being paid. It’s a ridiculous amount, and those ‘wage demands’ are a product of media speculation to begin with.
100k / week – I can accept (but still doubt – probably 80-90k plus hefty bonuses). 140k / week is a very big amount, unlikely that United would break their wage structure like that.
April 13th, 2007 @ 18:50Calderon? Who?
April 13th, 2007 @ 15:39Mendez? Who?
Kaka?
No way..
April 13th, 2007 @ 16:02I dont think Flashy Brazilians are a complete NO to Premiership. Jose Kleberson anyone?
err : I *think* Flashy Brazilians are a complete NO to Premiership. Jose Kleberson anyone?
April 13th, 2007 @ 16:03good choice, C-Ron…now i know you sleep on a pillow at night…haha…hey, congrats, you deserve whatever dough you get in a second…just stay loyal to Utd…
April 13th, 2007 @ 20:05all this talk of “club loyalty” that fans demand from players is absolute rubbish. “club loyalty”, as a notion, is a relic of a bygone era, when clubs were still very much of their specific locale, with almost all fans and players coming from within shouting distance of the grounds. today’s game looks nothing like this: top squads fill their ranks with players from every part of the globe, bought at premium prices, and owe zero obeisance to loyalty when these players cease to perform at fitting levels. it’s a BUSINESS, and there’s no one looking out for a player’s interests and livelihood save for himself, so to demand “club loyalty” of a player is to ignore the nature of the modern game.
players are professionals, that’s just facts, so let fans be loyal (or not) and let the professionals earn their wages on the pitch.
April 13th, 2007 @ 20:56He’s worth whatever he asks for…. ManU, SAF, Gill, the ManU fans (not Glazers I’m sure)…. all know ManU wouldn’t be anywhere they are this season if only this one player had not been there…. highest goal scorer (16), highest no. of assists (15), awesome skills/passes/crosses, by far the highest number of shots taken for ManU…. and most crucially yet least noted contribution is – Ronaldo has won net fouls (fouls won minus fouls lost) to the order of 67, whereas Vidic (ranking at #2 after CR) has won only 15 net fouls…. effectively Christiano Ronaldo has stopped the game for ManU, many times in goal-scoring spots (a few times right inside the box :p) with the most convincing, impressive and enviable physical awareness.
If you wish to contend ManU would have been only marginally upset if Ronnie wasn’t there, you’re being a biased fan. Point being, I wouldn’t be surprised if he is paid as much as Ballack – he deserves it….. he’s brought more money and hope to ManU than he can ever be paid.
