Ronaldo interview after Manchester United - Middlesbrough game

Let’s clear one thing out - Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo is a very talented footballer who is sometimes guilty of diving and other times guilty of looking for fouls and going down too easily.

He rides challenges as well - those are the times when you can really appreciate his talents - but he is more prone to using the ‘rules’ to his advantage by winning fouls in advantageous positions.

However, when situations like the Man Utd v Boro game come along sou have to hold your hand up and say - listen, I think he’s playing the rules and that he knows he’s drawing Woodgate into a foul.

What should Manchester United do about it? Nothing - they should try to stop Ronaldo from cheating, but when it comes to playing the rules its a different ball game, it’s tactical and while it may be unfair it is still within the rules. The FA should look at themselves, the media and the fans and opposing managers should look at the rules and not the players.

See Ronaldo’s interview - right after the Manchester United v Middlesbrough game. It’s an interesting insight into Ronaldo’s mind, and the smirk that he’s holding back through the whole interview is impossible to miss.

  1. For me I don’t think it was unfair. A defender should know that if you try and tackle player from behind in the box you have every chance of giving a penalty away. It was Woodgate who was sloppy in his challenge and he was duly punished. Ronaldo has been known to dive I can accept that, but he is also hacked down more than any other player. I thought the commentators were particularly harsh on Ronaldo saying it was his continental upbringing that forced him to do that. I’m sure Hughes would not have complained if one of his players had done the same thing in a similar situation, I guess we’ll see against Chelsea.

  2. I thought Sky’s interview after the game was disgusting. They basically tried to trick him into saying things he didn’t mean by taking advantage of English being his second language. Now I’m sure Sky have an agenda, but what is I dont’ know. For me that’s 100% a penalty. I don’t care if it was Roy Keane getting taken down in the box, no one stays on their feet there. Woodgate was stupid (not to mention he clearly thought about stopping the through ball with his hand seconds earlier) and got punished accordingly.

Gareth Southgate - you sound like a bitter, second rate, class manager. Which I guess is approrpriate.

  3. Sorry, make that class-less :)

  4. Yeah Of course he rides challenges well, he rid that one soo good huh! could of stayed up and he didnt, in other words hes a cheat. Want to see someone who rides challenges well? Aaron lennon, he could have dived and got diarra sent off last night but he didnt? why? because he is not a cheat. If it was ronaldo he would have been. What suprises me, is that ronaldo does simulation moves, dives, fakes, and refs still manage to give these crazy decisions. Im not saying woodgate didnt touch him, but as they said on bbc one, alan shearer, alan hansen, gary linekar, and mark hughes, give him an oppurtunity and hes down, great player but a cheating piece of scum.

  5. I’m not here to defend Ronaldo, but I will say two things:

    1) Ronaldo rides challenges as well, plenty of times when I’ve talked to Hasan about this and how he’s refused to go under when he so easily could have.

    2) Hansen, Linkear, Shearer - these guys are cunting biased against anything thats non-English. Xenophobia isn’t the answer.

    Cheating piece of scum?

That, my friend, is largely unfair. By that definition, Henry, Gerrard, Robben, Ronaldinho - they’re all cheating pieces of scum.

But no - Henry is god and Gerrard is English.

While Ronaldo is booed because Rooney stamped on someone’s bollocks and Ronaldo protested about it to the ref.

What I dont get is - if Rooney and Ronaldo - very close friends on and off the pitch - are ok with each other, why does the English media and fans persist in targeting him?

    Shameful.

  6. Richard - It’s not a penalty for you regardless of what happened. I’m sure the second you saw it was Ronaldo you assumed it was a dive. So why bother man? What’s the point? If that’s Alan Smith, identical thing happens, no one talks about it. Hansen and Shearer complement Smith for beating the offside trap, getting wrong-side of the defender and then critisize Woodgate for making a stupid decision.

End of. You tell me how Ronaldo scores after losing his standing leg. He has to put a hand down, stumble, get back up by which time the ball has rolled into the keepers hands. By your defintion, then, hacking a player from behind when through on goal is good defending?

  7. I didnt say it was good defending, aall i said was yeah there was contact but everyone and there mother knew he was going to fall reagardless of a touch, and the shimy in mid air is classic! If alan smith does it i would say the same thing, BUT he doesnt is the point, and it would be a first for him to. If rooney did it it would be a first also. Ronaldo does this constantly, Last time the played middlesbrough, tottenham, this time, i mean come on in each of these games he has single handedly won the game by a penalty which he himself dived for.

i know robben, ronaldinho, Henry and gerrard dive, but this is different, this is constant, and robben is cheating scum aswel, but the difference is these other players hardly ever get this match winning decisions, they may get them when it doesnt matter, but the ref would have never gave that decision had it been anyone else. i mean 3 times to win 3 matches? Come on now so why did he not stay up against tottenham, when he so easily could have then??? coz hes a cheat.

  8. A defender like Woodgate should know what Ronaldo is capable of in that area of the box. Also, travelling at that speed you’re bound to go down when tapped on the leg. Ronaldo was fantastic and his interview was unreal, he is still a boy, a happy boy!

    Man Utd treble!!!!!

  9. Richard - Apologies, can you remind me of the score against Tottenham? Also, Rooney was through on goal twice, didn’t score, Ronaldo hit the post in front of an open net, and even O’Shea almost put one in. So if you want to talk about single incidents defining a match, make sure you balance your arguement. If you honestly believe that Ronaldo’s penalty was the only chance of hte match, and that United didn’t deserve anything, clearly you either a) didn’t watch the match or b) just don’t get it.

  10. So what was the score when he did dive and when did it happen? oh and what was the score last night? oh and how did they win the match, im not talking about man u playing bad because they dont. im talking about a penalty defining the match, 1-0 last night 2-1 before and even though man u did beat spurs 4-1 or something, he dived before halftime and put man u ahead or level i cant remember but thats all my point is, is that he gets these decisions that do define the outcome of the match. and alex, sorry but we all arent as silly as you hoping someone munches me, ha! we all can talk hard on the internet..ooohhh

  11. CONTOVERSY;
Ashley Cole has commited 10 fouls since the start of the Premiership.2 of them given against Ronaldo (MU-Chelsea).He ’s been booked (just) 4 times and 1 of them against Ronaldo. :)
    What? http://www.eurosport.com/football/premiership/2006-2007/teams/chelsea/statsplayer_prs5002.shtml
    YEAP
So, maybe it’s controversy again. How can this so called cheating piece of scum Ronaldo win 2 fouls against the brilliance called Ashley Cole ?He also got 1/4 of Cole’s cards(my god).SAY NO MORE.LOOK AT CHELSKI OR ARSENAL STATS,THAT ‘S CONTROVERSY.

  12. From reading the comments, it seems like the point that the readers are trying to make is that Ronaldo was a diver, is a diver, and will always remain a diver, for as long as he is a Non-Englishman. No matter what he does… The day he becomes a ‘non-diver’ and join the current elite crop like Rooney, Lampard, Gerrard, etc. will be the day he give up his foreign nationality…not a minute sooner.

  13. Brilliant responses by Ronaldo after Stupid interview questions…

  14. I don’t spend time pondering over divers so I might be totally wrong here….. I think the 2 “flourishing” and “renowned” :p divers in EPL are Robben and Ronaldo. It’s just that Robben still needs to improve his diving technique and efficiency :p ….. Ronaldo uses his diving talent to “conclusively” change the outcome of games, as far as I’ve noticed, but Robbens dives aren’t that useful - in fact I can’t seem to remember when Robben won a penalty this season?!?!?! Winning 3-0 with a move assisted by a dive or instead winning 2-0 is the same thing as far as the result goes. But breaking your opponents down by a dive in an otherwise equalized match is…. issss… something people will naturally cry over.

  15. I dont understand how people can keep saying this. Yes ronaldo does dive, but NOT constantly, Ronaldo last season definatly was a serial diver, but in this season he has been a more disciplined player, and he does’nt go down as easily. The only game where he dived and it really did affect th outcome was tottenham. The previous middlesborough game, it was a penalty. Ronaldo CLEARLY stumbled and the penalty was given for intent. In Tottenham, I’ll put it simply, he dived. Yesterday, he was clearly tripped. I notice that a majority of english supporters will constantly criticise foriegners, but when english player dives, its suddenly okay. Anyone remember gerrard in the cl final, against sheffield, or even my beloved wayne Rooney, portsmouth anyone? This is a witchhunt by stupid supporters that will scare away the best player in the world and make the rubbish la liga and serie A good again, well ,almost.

  16. Azar - now you see, that’s absolutely unfair. You’re forgetting Diouf and Gerrard :)
  17. Ahmed - I don’t waste time watching pool matches :p so I haven’t seen much of Gerrards antics. And whenever I’ve seen them play, it’s because of the team they’re playing against or the match itself (e.g. Barca factor in EUFA or FA Cup final). Otherwise, naaaa….. I’d rather work on my dissertations.

  18. “Ronaldo is a fantastic player. There is a touch of genius in him and to be fair he lights up the Premiership. I don’t think he dived so you can’t put the blame on him.”
    J.Woodgate 21-3-07 Independent Online

While clearly clever and deft off pitch as well, these antics just seem to bemuse Christano. There is a whole section of English fans who will never forgive Ronaldo for their own World Cup misery. You critics are just straight salty, get over it already. Ronaldo will be POY. After being hounded by the press and opposing fans for months he laughed all of that off and has, at times taken entire defenses to the cleaners.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9chcPmSYFw

    Enjoy!

Hasnt dived consistantly this year at all!

  20. Richard (and everyone else):

    1) There’s a simple reason why you’ll find more diving clips than clips of Ronaldo riding challenges - more people focus on capping the dives than when he doesn’t go down.

    2) We know Ronaldo dives - people who say he’s improved this season are correct as well. What are both sides trying to prove when they agree on teh basic points - that Ronny is a talented player who goes down if he thinks it will help his side?

    3) Richard, you’re coming across as a Ronaldo hater, and as this is a story about United and is being read by United fans, you’ll have people defending him and going overboard in the other direction. I like your comments but you’re coming across pretty strong, so I thought I’d point this out.

Lighten up everyone. There’s a good and bad side to every person.

  21. that fall against lille was’nt a dive, i’ll admit, i thought he done it to. But a replay from another angle showed him getting whaked damn hard on the shin. So i guess you right, Hasnt dived consistantly this year at all!!

  22. Ronaldo is a very smart lad and is the best player in the world at the moment.

  23. i find these videos cool but i love ronaldo and find him cute and i am a hudge van !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! go manu!
