While unfortunate, we can use career-ending injuries as warnings that youth footballers and even young players at their prime need to be protected as much as possible from injuries. Most of that protection comes with adequate rest and training, because as you get older the injuries start getting worse (Neville is another example, so is Keano). related reading: Dr Panther's interview (Fulham Doc)

Ronaldo is finished it seems, simple as that. However sad it is – he was once a phenomenal player – he has nowhere near the player he was in 97-2000 and hasn’t been for some time so I think it’s time to say ‘farewell and thanks’ to a great.

it’s quite sad – he might come back for a testimonial but a rejuvenated career? a bit unlikely. he’s troubled as it is and I don’t what he’ll do if he doesn’t do football, so it’s a bad bad bad blow for the man.

I picked my best eleven ever recently and Ronaldo was in it. At his peak, I’ve seen nobody better.

Update: Piero Volpi, official team doctor of Inter Milan from 1995 to 2000, shares the optimism of Dr. Pascale. Interviewed by SkyTG 24, he commented:

"A rupture of the knee tendon is a very serious injury, for any athlete in any sport. In the year 2000 Ronaldo sustained the same type of injury while playing for Inter, and on that occasion the tendon was surgically repaired and Ronaldo made his full come-back to competitive soccer within a year and a half. In other words, it's a lesion which can be repaired, especially because modern surgery techniques have improved. The only problem is that he is now 8 years older than he was in 2000, which makes it harder for an athlete to return to their full original performance level. Recovery times should be around 8-10 months, but I wouldn't be pessimistic on the future of Ronaldo's career".
