Manchester United have been heavily linked with a move for Dutch midfielder Kevin Strootman. The highly rated Roma midfielder is a personal favourite of Louis van Gaal, and there is a strong feeling around Manchester camp that he could be lured in. The question is when – January or next summer?

The Times journalist James Ducker and The Telegraph’s Mark Ogden, both are heavily reliable when coming to Manchester United matters, mentioned that Van Gaal will be given a massive transfer war-chest in summer to reshape the squad to his own taste. Ducker mentioned that United are expected to lodge a bid for the Dutchman in the summer, while several other heavy weight names are also mentioned. You can read the article here.

Strootman recently posted on facebook that he is looking forward to playing in Europa League knock-out rounds starting from February, that suggest that he is probably not looking for a transfer in January. In any case, Roma would not entertain any offer from the Red Devils in winter.

Manchester Evening News claimed on 18th of Dec that Manchester United’s “spending spree could continue in the January transfer window” and that Van Gaal could be looking to spend over £30m for Kevin Strootman and Ron Vlaar.

While securing a deal for Strootman within £30m in January is simply a day-dream, United’s chance of signing Vlaar seem unlikely after Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has insisted the Dutch defender will not be sold in January.

‘They’ll (Vlaar & Delph) not go anywhere in January,’ said Lambert as quoted by Daily Mail. ‘It’s my say. The way January works, if somebody’s worth something you may as well put another 15 zeroes on the end of it. Price is inflated.”

Another Manchester United target Diego Godin has also ruled out any potential move in January or in summer, saying he wants to continue at Atletico Madrid for a long time.
