Geordie - there may be some good players we can pick up from ManU in the summer.
Brown, Sylvestre and O'Shea are three that could improve our defense - we'll need to see what Ferguson wants to do with some of his fringe players in the summer.
Apart from their experience they also have that winning attitude which Butt keeps showing.
I think John O'Shea specifically would be a great utility player for us - and would play a lot of games....much like Aaron Hughes used to do - and he's still only 25.

Like the defensive agenda, 4 million to improve quality and reduce age sounds great. Maybe consider Wes Brown as a utility defender or full-time right back also. Up front I'd like them to take a shot at Dean Ashton, when West Ham get relegated.
Midfield is pretty solid, although Duff needs to improve or be sold. Millner looks good, Dyer v.good, Parker-he's the man. Get shot of Emre - too much controversy.
Roll on 07-08

Like many others i doubt you would get Bridge for anything like £4m and only a fool (which Strachan isn't) would pay £2m for Carr, so I think much of your article is fantasy stuff, but interesting. Personally I don't rate Distin as he seems to me prone to the type of errors that Titus makes. Woodgate, as suggested by others, would be a fantastic buy but I wouldn't be in the least surprised if one of the 'big 4' snaps him up as he is, in my opinion anyway, the best centre half in the country when he's fully fit.
I think one thing we now have to recognise is that, as long as FS is in charge, we are no longer shopping in the same market as many other teams and we simply cannot compete with the big 4 and even the likes of Villa and West Ham can now afford to splash a lot more cash than us, though it hasn't done West Ham much good and they will be in the Championship next season anyway.
Given the circumstances I think Glen has done a good job and next summer will be interesting. Just for once I hope we sign players early rather than the usual last minute panic that FS seems to revel in.

mkl - I agree about Sidwell - see the second piece that is out on Soccerlens tomorrow - on our midfiled and attack - I like Sidwell - as you will see.
We'll of course have to see what happens - but there are some good players that will be available this summer.
We should be shooting for 5th place next year - and then up from there - think we can do it.

Agree with Hugo. There would be competition to sign both Anton and Wayne B., which would push their prices up to 5-6 million. Also, I don't really think that we are at the moment a team that can pick up Distin from Man City. There will be a competition for him too - and to me it looks like he has no eagerness to come back..

In any case. I wish we would be able to sign at least two defenders during the summer. Raiding West Ham wouldn't be bad idea in the case they go down. Neill is quality, and then try to get Upson or Ferdinand - either of them would do well with our giant Yankee. If on top of that we could get SWP or Reo-Coker with a decent price - I would be very happy Geordie :)

Or what do you think about Sidwell? Sidwell-Parker and Duff-Milner would look pretty good at least on a paper.. Then up front Owen-Martins... Oh, I think next year could be ours ;)

Hugo - I was hoping we'd get a sweetened deal from Mourhino again (like Duff, Parker and Babararo). But it may be that the time to have captured Bridge was last summer when Mourhino would have let him go.....but I still think we have a chance to get him now now that Cole has been acquired.

I think that all of the players mentioned would improve the squad, but there will most certainly be competition from other clubs. I also highly doubt that Bridge would be allowed to leave for 4 million.

There is no way you can buy Wayne Bridge for 4m. Which then completely throws it all out. Other options seem alright, and I think Anton would be good in Newcastle colours.

I know that we (newcastle) are a big club, but what makes us fans think that we can just go out and buy cracking players and that they would jump at the chance of coming. We often think that "Newcastle should just buy X Y or Z" and we will become a great club once again pushing into the top 4. The last transfer window showed that we are not doing this and that players do not necessarily what to come to Newcastle. Mr Shepard has always came up with some kind of cash but the last manager frivolously spent a pot of gold that GR could have used wisely. We are not a club that can just click our fingers and players will come running (Chelsea, man utd,Barcelona) and the sooner we realise that the better. Mr Souness put this club back 2-3 seasons and hopefully GR can make things better. Regardless of who does or does not come to Newcastle next season I for one will still be in my black and white shirt on a cold March afternoon on the terraces at SJP.

IIorente - good point I forgot about Woodgate.
He would be great - but I think because Middlesbrough took a chance on him last August (and we didn't) it will be hard for him not to sign for his home town club....but you never know.
Agree about height up front - we are weak there and also need more height at the back.
