Roeder must be ruthless to make Newcastle a top-six team
Glenn Roeder must be ruthless in the summer transfer market if Newcastle are to progress next season into a top six team.
Their first duty will be to shore up the defense — which has been weak for a number of years.
Players who will be leaving include center back Craig Moore — who wants to play in the new Australia A league — and since his contract is up he will be a free agent in the summer. While Roeder may well extend Titus Bramble’s contract – we have to hope that is just a ploy to get a transfer fee for him in the summer. Titus can play great one week and then give a silly goal away the next – and over the last five years he has not shown enough to be kept at Newcastle.
So let’s assume we sell Bramble (once his contract has been extended) and can get $2M for him — remember he is still only 25 so that should be possible. Teams interested include Portsmouth and Ipswich.
In defense — which I will cover today (the rest will be in a separate article on Soccerlens tomorrow) we need reinforcements at center back and left back.
We are very well off at goalkeeper, with Given, Harper and young Krul. We can assume that we can let Pavel Srnicek go — unless they want to send Dutchman Tim Krul out on loan for the season.
At center back we are losing two (Bramble and Moore) and I assume we will take up the option of buying Oguchi Onyewu (“Gooch”) — assuming he continues his good form through the end of the season, which I expect him to.
Who are the center backs available?
Roeder has made it clear he likes Curtis Davies of WBA and Anton Ferdinand of West Ham — two excellent young players.
To me either of these players would be good buys — and assuming West Ham get relegated – then Ferdinand would be available at a reasonable price (say $4M).
Let’s say we can get Ferdinand, who has just turned 22 and he would be a good acquisition.
Although Roeder has indicated he wants players under 25 we will need some experience at center back and I still believe that getting Sylvain Distin — who played for Newcastle four years ago — would be great — particularly since he is a free agent in the summer and would cost nothing.
So — at center back we can allow Bramble and Moore to leave and get Ferdinand and Distin in for a net amount of $2M.
We have been weak at left back all season where Babayaro has been out injured for almost half the time – and for whatever reason Olivier Bernard has never played for us.
We have to assume Bernard will be let go as a free agent in the summer so who are the left backs available?
Gareth Bale is available from Southampton — but in reality — anything over $8M would be a ridiculous price for Newcastle to pay for him.
While Gabriele Heinze may be available from Manchester United the player I’ve always liked is Wayne Bridge from Chelsea. It’s also stupid that England’s best two left backs are at the same club and not playing regularly (Bridge and Cole).
So let’s assume we can get Bridge —for say $4M — and that would be good for Newcastle, England and Wayne Bridge himself — and that will settle the left back spot once and for all at Newcastle — with Babayaro there as a good backup.
At right back I like Nobby Solano (assume we will extend his contract by two years) and we have a host of young players — like Taylor, Huntington, Ramage and Edgar who can also fill the right back position – so since we are well endowed in that position – we can allow Stephen Carr to move on.
Celtic are reportedly interested — so let’s assume we can get our money back on Carr ($2M). For the full backs assume we let Carr and Bernard go and acquire Bridge for a net outlay of $2M.
In summary — for Newcastle’s defense out go Moore, Bramble, Carr and Bernard and in come Gooch, Ferdinand, Distin and Bridge.
Newcastle fans (and anybody else) – let me know what you think. To me it sounds like good business, and our defense will be improved AND the average age will drop – and all for a net outlay of around $4M.

now why the **** dont we have a chairman who thinks like you????? its a good idea but i very much doubt that will happen not because of money or manager but because of mr shepherd!!
March 1st, 2007 @ 16:40The players mentioned are good enough for us to go 5th or 6th . But not top 4. And, you forgot to mention woodgate which is a possibility. Ever since dyer’s comeback i’ve been saying “if dyer can do it woodgate and owen can do it”. With woodgate partnering any of the mention CB the whole of the season or most of it we can go top 4 if and only if we get a striker in the summer which can do Alan Shearer’s job description at least in his latter years that was to hold up the ball and be involved 100% of the time, unlike oba and owen who can dissapear for 90% of the time just like roeder said. 1 important trait upfront is height!
March 1st, 2007 @ 16:41IIorente – good point I forgot about Woodgate.
March 1st, 2007 @ 18:14He would be great – but I think because Middlesbrough took a chance on him last August (and we didn’t) it will be hard for him not to sign for his home town club….but you never know.
Agree about height up front – we are weak there and also need more height at the back.
I know that we (newcastle) are a big club, but what makes us fans think that we can just go out and buy cracking players and that they would jump at the chance of coming. We often think that “Newcastle should just buy X Y or Z” and we will become a great club once again pushing into the top 4. The last transfer window showed that we are not doing this and that players do not necessarily what to come to Newcastle. Mr Shepard has always came up with some kind of cash but the last manager frivolously spent a pot of gold that GR could have used wisely. We are not a club that can just click our fingers and players will come running (Chelsea, man utd,Barcelona) and the sooner we realise that the better. Mr Souness put this club back 2-3 seasons and hopefully GR can make things better. Regardless of who does or does not come to Newcastle next season I for one will still be in my black and white shirt on a cold March afternoon on the terraces at SJP.
March 1st, 2007 @ 22:11There is no way you can buy Wayne Bridge for 4m. Which then completely throws it all out. Other options seem alright, and I think Anton would be good in Newcastle colours.
March 1st, 2007 @ 23:30I think that all of the players mentioned would improve the squad, but there will most certainly be competition from other clubs. I also highly doubt that Bridge would be allowed to leave for 4 million.
March 2nd, 2007 @ 00:08Hugo – I was hoping we’d get a sweetened deal from Mourhino again (like Duff, Parker and Babararo). But it may be that the time to have captured Bridge was last summer when Mourhino would have let him go…..but I still think we have a chance to get him now now that Cole has been acquired.
March 2nd, 2007 @ 01:01Agree with Hugo. There would be competition to sign both Anton and Wayne B., which would push their prices up to 5-6 million. Also, I don’t really think that we are at the moment a team that can pick up Distin from Man City. There will be a competition for him too – and to me it looks like he has no eagerness to come back..
In any case. I wish we would be able to sign at least two defenders during the summer. Raiding West Ham wouldn’t be bad idea in the case they go down. Neill is quality, and then try to get Upson or Ferdinand – either of them would do well with our giant Yankee. If on top of that we could get SWP or Reo-Coker with a decent price – I would be very happy Geordie
Or what do you think about Sidwell? Sidwell-Parker and Duff-Milner would look pretty good at least on a paper.. Then up front Owen-Martins… Oh, I think next year could be ours
March 2nd, 2007 @ 04:05mkl – I agree about Sidwell – see the second piece that is out on Soccerlens tomorrow – on our midfiled and attack – I like Sidwell – as you will see.
March 2nd, 2007 @ 04:47We’ll of course have to see what happens – but there are some good players that will be available this summer.
We should be shooting for 5th place next year – and then up from there – think we can do it.
Like many others i doubt you would get Bridge for anything like £4m and only a fool (which Strachan isn’t) would pay £2m for Carr, so I think much of your article is fantasy stuff, but interesting. Personally I don’t rate Distin as he seems to me prone to the type of errors that Titus makes. Woodgate, as suggested by others, would be a fantastic buy but I wouldn’t be in the least surprised if one of the ‘big 4′ snaps him up as he is, in my opinion anyway, the best centre half in the country when he’s fully fit.
March 2nd, 2007 @ 04:56I think one thing we now have to recognise is that, as long as FS is in charge, we are no longer shopping in the same market as many other teams and we simply cannot compete with the big 4 and even the likes of Villa and West Ham can now afford to splash a lot more cash than us, though it hasn’t done West Ham much good and they will be in the Championship next season anyway.
Given the circumstances I think Glen has done a good job and next summer will be interesting. Just for once I hope we sign players early rather than the usual last minute panic that FS seems to revel in.
Like the defensive agenda, 4 million to improve quality and reduce age sounds great. Maybe consider Wes Brown as a utility defender or full-time right back also. Up front I’d like them to take a shot at Dean Ashton, when West Ham get relegated.
March 2nd, 2007 @ 06:08Midfield is pretty solid, although Duff needs to improve or be sold. Millner looks good, Dyer v.good, Parker-he’s the man. Get shot of Emre – too much controversy.
Roll on 07-08
Geordie – there may be some good players we can pick up from ManU in the summer.
March 3rd, 2007 @ 01:36Brown, Sylvestre and O’Shea are three that could improve our defense – we’ll need to see what Ferguson wants to do with some of his fringe players in the summer.
Apart from their experience they also have that winning attitude which Butt keeps showing.
I think John O’Shea specifically would be a great utility player for us – and would play a lot of games….much like Aaron Hughes used to do – and he’s still only 25.
