Robinho signs for Manchester City as Madrid and Arabs shaft Chelsea

money money money!

Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon says the club have agreed to sell Brazilian Robinho to Manchester City.

Calderon (speaking to Spanish TV):

“We have agreed to sell the player for human reasons, and for footballing reasons and for an important quantity of money.

The fact the player accepted the offer from City proves he isn’t moving for sporting reasons. Every time I have spoken with him he was very sad, crying and asking to leave Spain.”

The deal is believed to be worth £32.5m - and if you’ve followed Robinho’s work in the last few days you’ll know that he’s going to slag off Real Madrid once he’s settled in at the Eastlands.

But this shouldn’t be about Madrid or Chelsea or anyone else. This is a fabulous moment for Manchester City fans - they’ve got committed owners at the helm and unlike the Ronaldinho move, they’ve actually bagged a box-office superstar to play for them.

If Robinho and SWP linking up with Jo up front and Richards, Corluka, Kompany and Dunne at the back doesn’t get you fired up about City’s chances, then wait for January when more signings come in.

The game has changed, ladies and gentlemen. It’s going to be a wild ride… at least till the next game of football.

Mark Hughes:

“I am absolutely delighted to get the opportunity to work with such an incredible talent like Robinho. I have said that in order to compete with the best teams in the Premier League we have to be in the market for players of this calibre, and Robinho is undoubtedly one of the best players in the world.”

  1. Robinho’s first game in a Manchester City shirt will be against Chelsea at Eastlands on Saturday, 13 September at 1730 BST…

man wasnt he the one makin’ all that fuss ’bout goin’ to chelsea and now comes the offer and he turns it down i cant wait till the game featurin’ chelsea and man city

  3. Ahmed, Corluka went to Spurs today for £8.5m, and it’s Kompany. Sorry to be picky! I see Robinho playing behind Jo. Has everyone forgotten how good Martin Petrov was last season?
Regardless, United have got their man, even if its taken the best part of 3 months. Forget about Arsenal’s brand of football, watch us when we get everyone fit and into our rhythm!

  4. He didn’t turn down the offer he just wanted out of madrid. it’s real that turned it down and sent him to a destination of their choice just not to meet with his desire to join chelsea those bastards and plus City is not playing in the champion’s league

  5. Quite honest, I know almost nothing about the Manchester City team besides the fact that they have Elano, another Brazilian player. However, I can guarantee you that Robinho will elevate the team´s quality in the game. He´s a great kid with an enormous talent. I´ve allways been a real fan, but at this point, I´m really disapointed at Madrid directives for letting Robinho go. Good luck Robinho, I know one day you´l make your dream come true of becoming the world´s best soccer player and the Premier league is the league for you to probe it…!

Hope City & Tottenham do well, even though I support neither of them. SWP, Elano, Petrov in mid is as good as any other premier league side. Jo and Robinho are the same. Ditto Kompany, Richards, Dunne. All young players as well.

Tottenham look a good side as well I love Modric, dos Santos, Pavlyuchenko etc

  7. Robinho is up there with the best players in the world (messi, ronaldo, kaka, gerrard) and him going to city for me can only be stepping stone. The only way city are going to be able to challenge the top 4 is by offering greedy players 300,000 a week and even then some of them may still not want to come. City are not in the champions league so therefore any player joining them will probably have to sacrifice champions league football for two years before returning to the biggest platform for exposing their talent. Top player will not be willing to do this greedy players will. The difference when Chelsea started their revolution is that they had qualified for the champion’s league and therefore they were a more attractive prospect

  8. The best part of the story is that now the new City owners are saying that they want Ronaldo, too, and will pay 135 million pounds for him. Poor Robinho, he can’t get away from being second fiddle to Ronaldo, no matter where he goes.

  9. Haha Ces, I hadn’t thought of that but it’s so true.

And Jacob I completely agree, from what we know so far something doesn’t quite make sense - why would Robinho just jump ship to a (currently) inferior club?

I’m sure Robinho wanted to come to Chelsea and it wasn’t entirely about the money. I think Scolari could get more out of him than Hughes, he would have got to play in the CL this year and almost definitely the years to come, and would have got to live in London.

The only reason why I can see him agreeing to move to City is because R. Madrid gave him no other choice. Once they saw the City bid come in I’m sure it would have been very easy to back him into a corner by refusing to sell him to Chelsea - he was hardly going to stay at Real and hope for better luck in January, was he?
