Arsenal and Chelsea deserved penalties against United and Blackburn while Newcastle’s goal was clearly offside
A few penalties weren't given...
Whether he becomes their permanent boss has yet to be seen, but Newcastle United’s interim manager Joe Kinnear is certainly not going to go quietly.
In no uncertain terms, the former Wimbledon chief gave referee Martin Atkinson the full benefit of his opinion as he felt Toon defender Claudio Cacapa had been fouled immediately before Fulham were awarded their winning penalty.
However, the Right Result panel believe Joe should have been thanking the officials as Newcastle’s goal should have been disallowed for offside.
Blackburn Rovers can be thankful for small mercies. Despite a comprehensive defeat to Chelsea at a rain-soaked Ewood Park, it could have been a whole lot worse for Paul Ince’s team.
As early as the fifth minute, Rovers should have been down to ten-men as keeper Paul Robinson would have been sent-off had the in-form visitors been awarded a valid penalty after Blues striker Nicolas Anelka stumbled then fell under a determined challenge from the England goalie.
The game of the weekend, if not the season, was at the Emirates where Arsenal and Manchester United battled out a thrilling contest.
It was the under-pressure Gunners who came out on top and their winning margin should have been more comfortable.
At 2-0 in the second-half, they had valid claims for a penalty when Nemanja Vidic pulled back Samir Nasri.

If you think the officials got a decision wrong on the weekend, something that would have resulted in a goal or prevented one, let us know in the comments below.

It wasnt a pen for Arsenal, Nasri fell too late. If he had of fell when Vidic grabbed him then yes, but he didnt get pulled to the ground and could have stayed up and played on
It does not matter when he fell. If the defender grabs the jersey, its a foul. Unfortunately for Nasri that retard Webb refused to give it………….
I didn’t see the match live but followed the live blog on this website. When i saw the replay i thought it was a clear penalty. Nasri didn’t do much at all to Vidic except to try & keep him off the ball whereas Vidic pretty much brought Nasri down with a shirt-pull.
If we hadn’t won this would have been another case of bad luck for Arsenal.
No mention of the penalty Blackburn should have had when Bosingwa wrestled Pedersen to the ground then?
Usual big team bias.
What about Clichy’s handball?
Well i suppose by Andy Gray’s logic if it would have been a free kick then its a penalty, so perhaps it was, Howard Web is a bottler anyway
Was Clichy’s handball deliberate? Anyway how many of Man U players appealed? It hit Clichy’s hand, I agree but I dont think that was deliberate. As for Andy Gray, there is nothing I like better than to hear him cringe while commenting on a game which is in the process of being won by Arsenal FC.
yo…
i think the pull by vidic on nasri was definately a penalty call, however replays show that the ref had his vision blocked by vidic’s back…so, he cant fake that he saw a bad challenge can he?
on another note, i just luv mascherano…his tackles r so sweet…when he tackles the opposition players look at this challenge n dont bother 2 appeal…awesome dude, now…just dont get a red card at old trafford pal
Do we have to have this ridiculous piece every week? Is the average reader on here 10?
Give me strength!
Brian,
Would be interesting to hear whether the average reader comment was aimed at the comments or the level of writing of the article itself.
Personally I find it useful to have a recap how things could have been done better, not so that referees are hounded but because I want to see the FA and FIFA give more help to referees to eliminate these mistakes.
Plus it’s always good for a discussion
Anyway, your thoughts?
I think that it was a very weird weekend for the Premier League. The official had a bad weekend aswell.
Ahmed,
It’s the content and reply’s not the writing. Noboby ever agrees on the controversial issues and it always brings out the “He did..he didn’t, He did…he didn’t” schoolyard kind of arguments.
Interesting thing is, following recent debate on use of video replays, that even when everyone has seen the replays from multiple angles we still don’t get agreement!
Add to BD Connell’s comments its the fact that its pure BS that is annoying. Taking even the simplest game at random, Blackburn v Chelsea on Sunday, maybe Chelsea should have had a penalty and Robinson off in the 5th minute so in this Right Result table the result is 3-0. The rest of the game would have played out the same? No, so why bother? Also the big club bias is pathetic. Mentions the possible Chelsea pen but ignores Blackburn’s obvious one and Anelka handling the ball into the net. The result is the one printed in the following days paper. End of.
