Richardson will lead Sunderland to greater glory

Kieran Richardson - from Manchester United to Sunderland

As a Roy Keane fan (obviously), I rooted for Sunderland last season and will be following them again this season in the Premiership. For Sunderland fans these are days filled with optimism, and there’s every reason to expect a Reading-like season for Roy Keane’s men.

However, it would be remiss of me as a football blogger and owner of a football news blog if I didn’t comment on the big money (for Sunderland) signings of Michael Chopra and Kieran Richardson.

Chopra is a competent striker who will give Sunderland a clinical presence up front - however for Sunderland to do anything against the big sides they will be relying on their creative players, Carlos Edwards and Kieran Richardson.

At 5m, Manchester United fans will snicker and giggle and cherish this moment as one of their rare moments when they’ve made a profit on a player.

Richardson for 5m? Do you want a blow job with that?

Seriously, it IS that bad. United fans don’t like Richardson at all.

I think that’s unfair - he has never had the extended spell in the side and he needs day-in day-out football to develop his talents and turn into an attacking winger / midfielder that he’s shown signs of being.

If Sunderland stay up in the Premiership, Richardson could have a big role in that.

Good purchase, Mr Keane, but don’t mind us as we laugh all the way to the bank. Good luck next season.

  1. Well…WE HAVE FAITH IN ROY AND NIALL, lets see how it goes,eh?Tee!Hee!

  2. “needs day-in day-out football to develop his talents…”

just what talents are we talking about over here? he can’t shoot, can’t pick a pass, is good with running with the ball but never really makes anything of it…the guy’s a headless chicken on the pitch, for crying out loud. and yes, at 5 million i bet fergie couldn’t say yes fast enough. i can’t believe anyone (leave alone keano) would actually pay any sort of money for him!

and since i’m on a bit of a roll, tell me…am i the only one who thinks keano is signing shit players…like richardson and chopra? i mean, both of them haven’t done jack-shit in the premiership (except for those few months richardson had with west brom). sure, they’d light up the championship but i don’t rate them as premiership material.

all the best to keano…he might still make something out of richardson but i’ll be damned if he does!

  3. Thank god his gone

  4. He was one of my favourite players at manchester united! huge prospect! SAF has scrwed up big time, its gonna turn around and bite his ass

  5. anyone know why Rossi and Pique arent in the squad for the far east tour?

  6. steve, my understanding is that rossi and pique are taking a break after the u21 champs.

  7. pique and rossi to go on loan to sunderland

  8. I ma happy that he is gone, but I also think that he is great buy for Sunderland. The guy wasn’t for ManUtd but with his pace he can be a great asset for Sund. I wish good luck to him and his new team.

    @5
I believe rossi and pique are’nt on the team because pique is playing u-20 WC and rossi is still in his holiday period(6 weeks after U-21 championships)

  10. I think this is a good deal for both parties, but, (fantasy league players watch out) I believe Sunderland got the better deal yet.
Richardson IS a very good player. Unfortunately, unlike 20Legend, he is not the type that can ‘just get off the the bench and perform’. He need consistent games. More importantly, he also need to play a more ‘importnant’ role in the team (like a Scholes or Ronaldo). Now that he will hopefully get both, I know we can expect some sparks. I hope not, but, somehow, I feel we might regret selling him.

  11. This is now the second time (first on Redrants.com) that I type a comment, click sumit, and it disappears…
Don’t you want to hear what I have to say anymore :-(

He is only 22 and had little time on the pitch to show-up his skills. I feel 5m or 5.5m less for this young England international. I believe under the tough management of Keano, he can grow stronger and who knows he can even become a regular in the national team.

He is the best signing for Sunderland.
    All the best Richie!

  13. Richardson had a single fault. He thought he was better than he was.

Haven’t liked Richardson for a while now since his ego kind of overshadow’s his footballing skills. Then again I suppose being a big fish in a small pond(no disrespect to Sunderland) will suit him like it did at West Brom where I thought he was pretty good. He is fast and despite what people above have been saying he can shoot. I seem to remember that he hit a few rockets towards the end of the 05/06 season that were good. However he thinks that he is God’s gift to football and is probably more famous now for being the cousin of that scag in Big Brother which says a lot about him really

Hey karl the same thing just happened to me for the second time as well. What’s goin on?

  16. July 17, 2007Michael Serginson

I don’t see Sunderland having a ‘Reading’ like season to be honest. They’ve got a similar squad to the last time they came up and are buying players unproven in the Premiership.

How do you work out that Chopra is a competent striker? From 6 decent months in the Championship? How will fare against Ferdinand, Woodgate, Campbell, King, etc?

Who is Russel Anderson? I’m not sure that him and Nosworthy will form a rock solid central defensive partnership.

Who was the last player Fergie got rid of that did any good anywhere else? Richardson is crap and won’t find the openings he and space he had at United with top quality players picking him out or making runs for him.

The Mackems to finish bottom! (again)

  17. karl and Liam - wait for it, it never disappears :)

Michael Serginson - you were going well until you said this:

Who was the last player Fergie got rid of that did any good anywhere else?

For fuck’s sake, I’ll name three: Stam, Beckham, RVN.

Now Hargreaves can have his number!!! 23

  19. July 17, 2007Liam O'Kelly

Russel Anderson is a pretty decent centre-back who can also score goals with his head. He won the player of the month I think twice this year in Scotland which is very difficult for some one who doesn’t play for Celtic and Rangers and is also a centre-back. He was linked with a move to Celtic in January but for some reason or another didn’t go.

Hope that clears it up for you Michael

I agree with Andy C, Richardson thinks he’s better than he is. Otherwise, i think he’s a pretty decent player. He’s not good enough for man u doesn’t mean he’s not good enough for other clubs. He may become Sunderland player of the year at the end of season =) let’s all wait and see. Cheers!

  21. what do you mean richardson can’t shoot?
remember the end of the 2005/06 season when he was getting games?
he got a few goals, and had that amazing shot againstcharlton that hit the bar from about 40yards!
he’s got a better shot than giggs

  22. Richardson is a pretty good player if he is given time to develop his skill. In man u with ron and giggs he never going get much game time and a player is never going to develop with time on the patch. From my point of view he going to shine in sunderland.

He never going to be a giggs or a ron but he going to be a decent winger if he is given his time to develop on the patch.

  23. @serginson
Well as for “against likes of Terry, Ferdinand and co. ” not many people score, let alone Chopra or for that matter , you would have thought about Lita/Doyle last season. Sunderland have not boasted that they are coming to win the premiership. So calm down.

Keano has different ideas, he trusts in his squad and therefore he’s mostly bringing players for competetion. He may be wrong, but thats Roy Keane.

  24. Some good comments, the Man U lads seem an intelligent bunch, keano will have us up for every game, and remember this prediction we will scalp tottenham on day one of the season.

  25. I wonder if fans would change their opinion if he scores and gets a priceless point for sunderland against chelsea this season..

  26. July 20, 2007vovnvonic

anyone reckon halford will come to anything

  27. July 23, 2007Michael Serginson

Sorry, I’ll admit that Beckham and Van Nistelrooy have done well. I should have said squad players not the main men. eg. Fortune, Butt(never been as good), Cryuff, Chadwick, Sharpe. etc.

Also it’s probably clear that I’m a Boro fan and hate Sunderland. I just think that because keane is manager everyone thinks they’re going to be good, but if you take a good look they are still a poor side.

As I said before, if Sunderland stay up i’ll eat my hat.

  28. Micheal, I hope your hat is not too expensive…will be such a waste :-)
I have a feeling that Sunderland will do well. They will not have a lot of flair, but lots of grit and determination. I suspect they’ll finnish between 10-15.
