I don't agree with the hype that surrounds players like Terry and Ferdinand. True they are great players but we have to ask ourselves, would they be as hyped up if they weren't English. In my opinion Richard Dunne is second to none when it comes to defenders (That's even coming from the red half of manchester!) Carvalho is another fantstic defender who contributed more to Chelsea this season than Terry, although few will admit it. If Dunne and Carvalho were English and a bit more stylish, I assure you they would be hyped up as much as Terry and Ferdinand.

agreed on the comparison between Dunne and Richards - although Richards is a lot younger and has much to learn still.

What people fail to realize when they talk about Ferdinand, in the same way that Rooney is berated for his lack of goals, is that Ferdinand does so much more than the average central defender. Ferdinand, especially when Scholes is absent, launches the vast majority of United's attacks, and his passing is both varied and accurate (check out his passing statistics - among the besdt in the division). As "out and out" defenders, Vidic and Dunne are more useful, but as a footballer, particularly in a team such as United, Ferdinand wins hands down.

Dunne is quick, strong, good in the air and good in the tackle. You don't need a lot more from a centre half really!

There was one incident on Sunday when Tevez broke away from Micah Richards and Dunne must have made up six or seven yards on the striker to get in his tackle.

He has developed into a fine defender, and it certainly isn't wrong to talk about him in the same breath as Vidic, Ferdinand, Gallas etc.

Ferdinand is not the magic he's made out to be. He's good, but take off Vidic and he gets a bit lost. Vidic though is solid and it would be between him, Gallas and Dunne for the best defender. Dunne still has his doubters(including your truly, remember the two owngoals in a previous derby?) but he has improved by light years. And he's any day better than Carrager whose good days are clearly over.........

Excellent article. I actually feel that Dunne has performed to a higher standard than Richards this season, and that Richards looks a little bit lost when Dunne is unavailable. I don't think he is as good a player as Ferdinand, but there are few better in the Premiership, especially for consistency.
