Ribery Wants To Go To Lyon

According to Tuesday’s issue of Le Parisien, France midfielder Franck Ribery has said that he does not want to play for Marseille any more and that he wants to move to Lyon.

“Lyon is clearly my priority. I wish to stay in France for another two or three years and Lyon is the ideal choice for me and my family.”

If Lyon get their man they would be beating off competition from Manchester United (who had two bids of 9 and 10 mil pounds turned down) and Arsenal.

When Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas said that “it was just a matter of time before Ribery joined them”, almost everyone took that as showboating – similar to the type of talk Olympique Marseille’s president Pape Diouf is known for (who is asking for 15 to 20 mil pounds for the player dubbed the next Zidane).

On current form, Ribery has all the tricks but none of the class that is associated with Zidane – I hope Lyon gets them and not United, as we need to concentrate on getting strong midfielders, not wingers.

Having said that, I’ve always considered our bid for Ribery as a ruse to get Lyon to sell Diarra to us for a lesser price than 20 mil. While Lyon don’t need to sell they are after midfielders and would probably sell Diarra to the highest bidder (meaning that Madrid could still get involved after their 2nd July elections).
