Reyes can still be great for Arsenal

Reyes can still be great for Arsenal

A spell at Arsenal without Henry at the club could very well convince Reyes to give it another go. Now before everybody starts bleating I think its good to understand a few things first.

The weather was not the main cause of Reyes becoming unsettled and unhappy at Arsenal. I am sure everyone remembers those first three months of his first full season in the red and white. We witnessed a player with tremendous skill and boy were we excited. 5 goals in 6 games had everybody sitting up and taking notice. Not only was this kid fast and deadly but he was a fighter. No matter how hard he was kicked he never stopped running.

Now the next part is a personal feeling of mine so I will take no offence to criticism on this. Henry did not like Reyes! He showed it on the pitch and slowly but surely the performances of Reyes dropped and he struggled for form. I remember the incident on the radio interview when his mother referred to “Very bad people in the dressing room”. Could she have been talking about Henry?

Reyes would fit into the new look Arsenal very well and be in a position to rebuild his career and his reputation. Right now he wants to go, for sure but it is becoming more and more obvious that no club is going to meet Arsenals evaluation of the player. We have already said no to 2 offers from Madrid and their hasn’t been a third. Lyon say they want him but they too seem unwilling to meet our demands. Wenger will not sell simply because he has to get rid of the player. Gallas is pure evidence of that. Chelsea thought they held all the cards with Cole and tried to leave it till the last minute. It cost them their title, I firmly believe that! And I don’t think he will be allowed to go out on loan for a second year.

What I also believe is that if Reyes is forced to return to Arsenal, perhaps come January he might enjoy playing in an Arsenal side without Henry in it. Maybe we could see the Reyes every Arsenal fan got so excited about just 2 and half years ago.

Reyes, Can be good at Arsenal.
We really need him to stay I think because he showd at Real how good he can play, And to have him sold from the Emirtaes would be a shite idea.

    Give him until January!

Reyes is basically of gypsy extraction.

This meant that he did not speak castellano until he was about 16 years old.

The very idea that this cretin could handle adapting from 45c temps to freezing at Bolton was, is and always will be preposterous.

Have some dignity man – a woman who cheats on you should stay out of your life. Reyes has consistently slated our fine club and is dead to me.

I hope you are sincerely having a laugh. The bloke has publicly stated over and over again he doesnt like it here. If he is forced to return then perhaps he can sell programmes outside the ground!

Top article. I agree with you 100%. Reyes and Henry did not get on, simple as that. I think Reyes should show that fighting spirit, and give it one last go, he still has loads to offer Arsenal. Reyes in the team, is just the balance and type of player we desperatley need. He runs, wins free kicks, scores, eye for a pass, and he is passionate. I for one hopes he stays.

A well constructed article that does raise a very good point, another thought is that henry drifted into reyes’ natural playing position which he felt may have stifled him further. He was an outstanding player, and still is. I think he could well return unless our fee is matched, and although he may not like the idea, with a little help settling back in to the new make-up of the squad he could learn to like it.

Bring him back, or get £15m!

i remember him being brilliant before the neville brothers kicked the crap out of him. it looked like he was enjoying himself in the cl before he got left out of the final, that was a pity because throughout the tournament he was one of our best players. he is a threat, seeing as how he was the most fouled player in the cl( few dives). and REDONDO, he turned the final game of la liga round on his own when it looked like real were about to bottle it. and with less french and more spanish speakers being bought like merida, vela and denilson, aswell as gilberto, senderos and fabregas, he might just feel more part of the team. however i must say that with a good lineup of attackers at arsenal, i dont want a player at the club who is worth around 10m and would not give 100% when there are players who are as good as him and willing to give 100%.

I agree with you Norman. But then I have been posting the sentiments in this article on blogs for about half the summer. I do believe Reyes is exactly the player we need, and I believe he will enjoy Arsenal without Henry…but I don’t think he’s returning. If there were a chance he was returning he would be involved in pre-season training.
He hasn’t played with Arsenal for a year. For Arsene to then not include him in pre-season training indicates Wenger has no intention of reaclimatising him to the squad. He’s off.

gooner10, Denilson and Gilberto are not spanish speakers. They each speak 2 languages, Brazilian Portuguese and English. I had no idea that Senderos spoke spanish I must admit.

    However, Almunia speaks spanish!

Yeah i think you are spot on. Also why would we sign all the names banded about like queresma and drenthe when reyes can already cut it here. As I had stated somewhere else, maybe the fans wouldnt give him a warm reception but let him score the winner against man u and he will be a hero again.

i would happily see him back but it’s NOT GOING TO HAPPEN – this is a non story… he has said so many times that he doesn’t want to come back, things would be easier for him now with Henry gone but he wants to stay in Spain

I susepct this won’t happen, but I think you have a point. Left midfield is the one place where I don’t think we have real depth now: Rosicky is great, but not a left-winger (Incidentally, I think he should be tried in the Bergkamp role). Although Reyes’ attitude was painful at AFC, he did provide a good number of assists and a fair smattering of goals. We missed him last season. I understand that he might prefer to stay in Spain to returning to Lonodn, but what I don’t really get is why he might prefer Lyon to us. If I were him I reckon I’d be saying to myself, ‘well, might as well return to the Gunners as go to a sesond-rate European league’.

He’s a good player and may still cut it with the gunners. But for two years the fellow had not one good word about the club or the coach. And he found so much joy in playing so few matches for Madrid. Dont get me wrong, he’s one of the best on his day, but sorry cant take him back.

    July 27th, 2007 @ 16:46
  13. Norman

The point I think is a simple one. Reyes has 2 years left on his contract. If he wakes up and chooses to see out 1 of those 2 years he will be in a much stronger position to go where he wants to go and Arsenal will mostlikely accept a bid of around 10 million euros or face loosing him for nothing. It will also give him the chance to rebuild what is left of that huge reputation he once had.

Now I know he is 90% gone, but if he uses his brains he is in a good position right now. Lyon is not the answer and neither is Atletico. If he doesnt go to Real, Barcelona, Milan or any of those then he should return to Arsenal. Put his head down and work his socks off! I truely believe there was a time when he looked as though he had settled in nicely…He can do it if he applies himself.

A very interesting article. The problem is that we just don’t know what’s going on inside his head or between him & the club. It could be he might be happier that Henry’s gone & be more willing to come back. It could also be that maybe there are other players in the dressing room he didn’t get along with. Or it could be he’s just homesick or really just doesn’t like the English game.

The whole Aragones episode made me think that maybe it was an open secret that Henry & Reyes were at odds & the coach was playing on that sentiment with Reyes. Or maybe it was the Aragones episode that aggravated the situation between Reyes & Henry. We’ll never know will we?

I think that if Arsenal can’t sell him to anyone, Reyes (who hopefully has grown up a little bit by now) will grit his teeth & come back & give it one more go. I think he knows that if he stays at Arsenal he has to play a significant number of games if he wants to keep his marketability up (if he ever wants to get sold next season). I think him & the manager need to have some serious words about what his role is gonna be if he comes back next season.

If he does come back, i will support him. He deserves one last try & i think all the fans should give him the benefit of the doubt & see how he does. Nobody denies he’s talented, & if he delivers all will be forgiven. I have no problems with that.

    July 27th, 2007 @ 18:16
  15. iqnadirshah

I think that aragones caused the standoff between Henry and Reyes. The problem is he was brought in as a striker but towards the end started playing as a winger and that may have caused problems, which surprisingly didnt seem to happen when he was playing in the same position for Real. The bottomline is he doesnt want to come back, even though the majority of the gunners(but not me) would welcome him back. But the fellow should realise that just because he wants to leave, that doesnt mean wenger would sell him to real for any cheap price. We paid quite a lot for him, might as well get some returns on that money…….

    48 Hours
If the reports of the ultimatum are true, then we may have clarity soon. My guess is that this ultimatum is Lyon’s, and that if he says yes, he will go, but after 48 hours, Lyon will look elsewhere. Arsenal seem to be ready to go on with or without him and the money he will bring if sold. As for Madrid, on the one hand, they seem to make one bad business decision after another. They had him for a year and are not willing to pay 10M? Or they are, but they think — wrongly, as usual — that they have the upper hand, as they always do, and as is often proved wrong.

Man Utd fan here. Ok he is a good player, but considering all the staff that he said about Arsenal, you should get rid of him. I don’t understand how he can consider Lyon or Atletico against Arsenal. My opinion he is a Real player 100%

I think we should flog him on second thought, I think 7-14 Mil is acceptable.

Van Persie, Ada and Theo are all out for the Emirates Cup, If Bendtner and De Silva step up and play well we dont need any new strikers.. If they play not up to Premier League quality we need to buy Huntalaar, Anelka and maybe Leighton Baines..

Other clubs are spending while were being very tight ass and not spending at all…

    KyleAusGooner,
Leighton Baines? Alot of ambition there, and alot of sarcasm on my part. The same can be said for Reyes, he’s second rate. He was a flop in England and hasn’t performed that well in Spain, cut and run i say, get as much money for him as we can while other clubs are still interested and willing to pay a reasonable amount. Would honestly rather have Baptista ‘The beast’ rather than Reyes ‘The whinging diver’

Reyes is a very good player. He’s showed that for us. He impressed at the start of his first full season at the club and I agree, Thierry Henry may have been a factor behind his wanting to leave. However, I don’t think it was that alone and living in England, away from home, more so the weather, must have been the larger factor.

As good a player he is and could be, he doesn’t want to be here. And if he doesn’t want to be here, what can you do. I’d hate to see him leave for a low price though. In Spain this kid could be something special. I remain convinced though that he’d really have evolved into something quite special if he’d settled in England. And if he does come back, I can’t see him staying for long.

While it’s unfortunate in the respect that he’s clearly got ability, he doesn’t want to play in England and so I’d rather we sold him, though not to Real Madrid at a stupid price.

  28. True Gunner

i think we should buy LEIGHTON BAINES because firstly,he is an english.we r a english club but we lack of first team english players.besides that,he is also a good left back and shows impressive perfomance at WIGAN last season.for now,we need a good left back.i dont think he will cost much money.so,he is the man we r searching…………

  29. RearGunner

How is Leighton Baines needed when we already have Clichy? What, should we buy a not as good player because he is English. I agree, I’d like to see more English players at the Arse but only if they are good enough, better than what we have already. He’s a good player but he’s not the answer and wouldn’t be an improvement on our current squad. Unless you mean as a back up for Clichy in which case he might be hesitant to accept being second choice when he could get first team football elsewhere.

If recent reports are to be believed, he’s all set to go to Atletico for €12 million. What the hell are they thinking over at Real Madrid?

What bad business if Arsenal sell him for 8 million pounds. Wenger has to hold out for 12 mil. He is good enough for that fee and fuk madrid to hell. Arsenal should install a policy that no matter how much money theu offer we will never sell a player to them.

Does wenger really want pires back or did pires offer himself? I remember that he said he’d like to spend one last season as a gunner and capped it by saying “Arsene boss what do you think? ” I’d love to have him back, he was my favourite. A player in the mould of zizou but extremely unlucky with injuries. That said I’ll never forget that massive goal he scored at Anfield……….

No chance of Reyes being greAT for Arsenal anymore!! The guy didn’t want to stay so as Wenger said, no point of having unhappy players at the Club. I think Arsenal need some more back up though, especially on the left wing after having lost Ljungberg as well. Must say they looked very impressive in the Emirates Cup.

On a different point, want to know Henry’s reasons for leaving Arsenal? Here they are:
