Whoa, whoa, wait, back up...you're saying that John O'Shea is not as skillful as Messi?

I disagree and agree with most of what Ish says. I belive that the average fan is discerning enough to assess the multiple variables when evaluating a player. Penalties or not, Lampard and Gerrard are full value and rightly highly regarded.

The one thing that's missing though is the credit given to top defenders who seldom get the awards, for all the reasons you state.

umm do you take into account that lampard and gerrard also make up a very large section of the assists in a team and including them would be 30 goal plus creation a season for 3-4 seasons. Each player has his own role, look at many DM's who are pivotal to teams but score maybe 3 goals a season. Goal scoring is a good way to see contribution from strikers and forwards. C.Ronaldo himself is more a second striker playing wide then a real winger, many of his goals came because of the space created by rooney. Sometimes a player doesnt get an assist or even a goal yet is the reason the goal would be scored. Many viewers dont realize how important width and space can be in a game and assume the american style idea that statistics are important. in association football their are too many variables to say that one player is much better then another. Now if comparing players on flair and those kind of skills its easier for a layman to go yes messi/c.ron is better then makalele.
