Ilan,

Some interesting points raised on your blogs. I am always happy to see bargains picked up because I remember the way Keegan splashed the cash at City and the team did not perform in a manner worthy of its investment.

An interesting article. Mark Hughes and David Moyes have certainly done remarkably well at their clubs. Redknapp has used more money but, fair to him, he has done extremely well with his purchases and his team will challenge for a Uefa spot this season.

I wrote an article about Mark Hughes' purchases and why he is such a good manager. Perhaps I'll write one in the future on Redknapp. Check it our at soccerstatistics.blogspot.com and tell me what you think.

Hugo,

Thanks for the feedback, it's nice to see Blackburn getting a lot of attention right now. I remember Derbyshire well, I was at the game when Blackburn beat Man City in the FA Cup in March 07 and he got the second, maybe Hughes will give him a bit more of a run in time. I thought at the time that Jason Roberts was an excellent buy, he did fantastically at Wigan in 2005-6, but it doesn't seem to have worked out as well for him at Ewood.

A good read, Anthony, I really enjoyed this. The one point with which I disagree has to do with Mark Hughes' handling of Blackburn United youth players. Whilst I have, in my own article, saluted Hughes' ability in the transfer market, the fact remains that Hughes is as prone as any manager in the Premiership to go out and buy a player in the most superfluous manner instead of relying on youth players. What more could Matt Derbyshire do to merit a prolonged period in the first team? He has been England U21's standout player over the last year, scores regularly when called on from the subs bench, and is a local player with a superb attitude. But instead, Hughes purchases Jason Roberts, Franny Jeffers (now departed) and then Roque Santa Cruz. There are other possible examples, too, like Sergio Peter who for years has been knocking on the door.

I did neglect to mention the jobs done by Steve Coppell and Paul Jewell in recent years in this article, which of course haven't gone unnoticed, but was focusing more on the current clubs flying high.
