Real Madrid sign VfB Stuttgart midfielder Sami Khedira

Real Madrid have completed the signing of VfB Stuttgart midfielder Sami Khedira for an undisclosed fee. The 23-year-old, who was a breakout performer at the World Cup, has penned a five-year deal with the club.

Khedira came up through the Stuttgart youth system and made his senior debut for the club in October 2006. Over the last few seasons, he established himself as a regular in the side, making 82 Bundesliga starts and scoring 14 goals. Last season, he had two goals and five assists in 24 Bundesliga starts.

Khedira’s stock went up this summer at the 2010 World Cup, as he took over in midfield for the injured Michael Ballack and was one of the impressive young rising stars who helped lead Germany to a third-place finish in South Africa.

Those impressive performances helped draw interest from the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United, but Khedira
had his heart set on a Madrid move
, and he has become the club’s third big signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Benfica winger Angel di Maria (€25m) and Getafe winger Pedro Leon (€10m).
