According to Portuguese daily A Bola, United’s summer pursuit of Real Madrid defender Fabio Coentrao  could be helped by a Benfica-Madrid alliance. Coentrao is currently behind Brazilian star Marcelo in the pecking order at Madrid, and he can leave this summer if another left-back arrives.

Los Blancos are keen on the Portuguese side’s left-back Guilherme Siqueira, but he’s currently on loan in Lisbon from Spanish club Granada. And the 27-year-old could join Benfica permanently this summer for a bargain €7million – only to be sold to the Santiago Bernabeu immediately for a profit. Reportedly, the Spanish giants tried to sign Siqueria from Granada to pave the way to sell Coentrao to United on deadline day last summer itself.

However, even though the Brazilian left-back was happy to move to the Santiago Bernabeu the deal collapsed at the very last minute as he had already agreed to move to Benfica on loan and with the contract signed he couldn’t renege.

Manchester United are in the market for new left back as Patrice Evra’s contract is due to expire at the end ot the season and United want a permanent replacement for the French international while Alexander Buttner would be understudy for the new signing. Meanwhile, apart from Coentrao, United have also been linked with Everton star Leighton Baines, Southampton yougster Luke Shaw and Atletico Madrid’s Filipe Luis.
