Raheem Sterling all set to sign a new five year deal at Liverpool by the end of this month, which should lift the air of gloom, a bit, following skipper Steven Gerrard’s shock decision to leave the club at the end of the season.

The 34-year-old has announced via the club website that he will leave the club at the end of the season, while MLS club LA Galaxy could be his possible destination.

Gerrard paid tribute to Brendan Rodgers saying he could have won more trophies with him, had he worked with the current manager during his prime years.

“I wish I was 24, I wish I’d met Brendan when I was 24 because I think I’d be sitting here talking about a lot of titles that we’d won together. The reality is, Brendan came into this club when I was 32 years of age and it’s a shame that relationship didn’t start 10 years ago,” said the Liverpool skipper.

Gerrard’s departure from the club will be a huge blow, but it gives an opportunity for the club to enter a new era, where young guns at the club can step up to fill the boots of the club legend. According to Jason Burt of The Telegraph, Liverpool are close to securing the services of Raheem Sterling, who is likely to sign a new five year deal at the club.

The 20-year-old has rejected an early offer from the club, when he was initially offered a pay rise taking him to £70,000 a week but his representatives were understood to be holding out for £120,000 a week.

The two parties have met somewhere in the middle and Sterling is now all set to put pen on paper. Sterling has become one of the key figures of the club, after the departure of Luis Suarez, and the new contract is only reflective of his growing importance at the club.
