Premier League Round 2 Winners and Losers – Chelsea and Liverpool stay perfect, Arsenal and Tottenham disappoint
There’s still one more fixture left to be played in the second round of Premier League fixtures, but it’s time to take an early look at the winners and losers from the weekend’s action.
Chelsea and Liverpool have gotten their title challenges off by taking maximum points from their first two league ties and are assured of sitting atop the table at the end of Monday night, but they aren’t the only ones with a reason to feel good as a new week commences.
However, things are not nearly as rosy for some other sides, who have a little something to say for themselves after the weekend.
So, let’s take a look first at the winners.
Winners
Chelsea and Liverpool
Not only have both Chelsea and Liverpool gotten off to a 100% start through their first two matches, but they already have some separation from their title rivals out of the gate.
Liverpool seem intent on giving their fans many a heart attack this season, but as long as they keep getting the three points, it’s welcome excitement. The late victories aren’t always the most deserving ones, but once again, three points is three points.
On the flip side, Chelsea have wrapped up the points early on against Portsmouth and Wigan, and Deco, well, he’s proven to be quite the bargain thus far, hasn’t he?
You can be sure that Manchester United, and very likely Arsenal, won’t let them get too far away too quickly, but the Blues and Reds have definitely thrown down the gauntlet early on.
After letting an early 1-0 lead slip away in a 2-1 defeat at Hull on opening weekend, the only way for Fulham was up, and boy, did they go up. They took full advantage of a poor Arsenal side to take a deserved three points in a 1-0 victory over the Gunners, and after seeing their early lead disappear against Hull, made sure Brede Hageland’s 21st minute strike held up, withstanding Arsenal’s late pressure where we’ve seen many falter and let points slip away.
Spending as they did this summer shows that this is a side that has ambition, and you can imagine that they’ll be even more competitive when they have a healthy Andy Johnson in their ranks. If they can maintain that fighting, nothing-to-lose spirit that helped them escape relegation last season, there’s hope for Roy Hodgson’s side to push for more than just being safe this time around.
Newcastle
Sure, there were far too many empty seats at St. James’ Park on Saturday, but the ones who were there got to see the Magpies pick up three points in a 1-0 triumph over Bolton. It’s certainly good to see Michael Owen upright and doing what he does best (score goals, not injure himself), and maybe, just maybe, there’s some hope for Newcastle after all.
It’s much too early to be overly excited, but Kevin Keegan has got to be encouraged about coming out of the first two weekends with points. Maybe the supporters are waiting a little longer before spending their money on watching their side play, but if they can go to Arsenal and put in another good performance, then that might give reason for more butts to fill the seats.
Losers
Arsenal
Two rounds in isn’t exactly time to panic if you’re Arsene Wenger, especially considering how Manchester United stuttered out of the gate last season and ended up winning the title. But, while he may be trying to stay as cool as a cucumber, he can’t be happy. After an underwhelming performance in a 1-0 win over West Brom, the Gunners were equally as unconvincing at Craven Cottage on Saturday, and it resulted in a 1-0 defeat to Fulham.
You can talk about their failure to sign so on and so on thus far all you want, but it’s not about who you don’t have, but who you do, and there’s not a lot inspiring about Arsenal right now. Maybe all that went on this summer with players leaving/wanting to leave/being linked with moves has taken its toll, but Arsene needs to lay the boot into his boys, and fast.
There might be a signing or two in store before they take on Newcastle, but whatever side Arsene puts out on the pitch on Saturday, they need to step it up to make sure they don’t suffer the same fate that United did.
This isn’t how it was supposed to be for Tottenham. Yes, the absence of Dimitar Berbatov doesn’t help, and neither does his attitude, but to be one of only four sides not to have a point (and that could be three, if Portsmouth can get a good result against Manchester United today) right now is going completely against the script.
You’d have expected at least a win and a draw against Middlesbrough and Sunderland, but alas, second-half defensive lapses in both matches have proved to be Tottenham’s downfall.
With a visit to Stamford Bridge looming next Saturday, Spurs really need to sell Berbatov get it right, otherwise they’re going to be in full-on catch-up mode the rest of the way if they want that top-four finish.
If the first couple of weeks are any indication, when you tune in for an Aston Villa match this season, you’re going to be in for plenty of excitement.
Villa’s first two matches have produced 11 goals, which is all good and well when you’re coming out on top in those goalfests, but they can’t afford to throw away points or have regular defensive lapses if they want to make a legitimate challenge for a top-four or top-six finish.
Saturday, Martin O’Neill’s side came back from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits against Stoke, but allowed Mamady Sidibe to head in the winner off of a last-second throw-in (?!).
Last season, dropped points from the start of the season against Liverpool to the end against West Ham proved to keep Villa from earning an automatic place in Europe and instead having to make their way into the UEFA Cup through the now-defunct Intertoto Cup; I’m pretty sure Martin O’Neill doesn’t want to see it becoming a recurring theme again. Firepower certainly isn’t an issue with the likes of Agbonlahor and Carew bagging goals, but you know what they say about defense and championships.
Are Chelsea and Liverpool the two to beat? Can Tottenham kick their early funk and get their push for a high finish back on track, or are they bound for another mid-table showing? Do Arsenal need to make a couple of big signings to be a serious contender, or can they do it with the squad that they have? We’re not out of August yet, but there’s already plenty to talk about, so discuss away!

Football News 24/7
Well, as a liverpool fan I am really happy, certainly not by the performances but by the results. It very early to judge teams now…I think after 10 matches, a clear picture will be obtained…. I’ve not been too impressed by Arsenal. Last season, they exceeded expectations but what about now? Certainly, Van Persie has not been fit for some time now and I question the duo of Alde and Persie( it looks like Vorronin and Kuyt with pace). Bentler is better than ALde, I think- but I am not a manager, let Wenger decide. After all, he has won the Premiership in his 2nd season, hasn’t he? The teams in the league seem hungrier this season-in fact, perhaps the league is going to become more attractive- Spurs look set to dissapoint again. Watch out for Newcastle though I think they may falter come mid-season. A place in Europe does not look far-fetched but indded, its early times. Come on, Pompey, Beat Manchester United….Last point, Arsenal look very ordinary without Fabregas, as do Manchester without Ronaldo. No need for me to be smug though, as Liverpool have looked mediocre WITH their 2 best players. 6 points though and with monster , babel and lucas coming, I look forward for better displays. And if the owners hear that, please buy a left winger. I’ll even go with quaresma( You know the Barcelona reject who I constamtly brand as crap…that’s how desperate the situation is)
August 25th, 2008 @ 10:50Good article.
August 25th, 2008 @ 13:47First off Man Utd supporter but I’ll try to keep my biased opinion at bay.
As Harasuke stated it’s early days in the EPL, but it still leaves some to wonder. Deco is turning out to be great signing for Chelsea. I figured that tho. Where is the Keane and Torres duo? I hate to see Liverpool win, but have always been a fan of Keane and thought he do well there. I’m sure he just needs time to mix in with the team.
For us….ugh! 1-1 to New castle. Yes, without players like Ronaldo, Nani, Anderson and Tevez we still had Giggs, Scholes, Rooney and our entire back four. And FLETCHER is the one to score? Job well done for the lad, but we need more goals. Tevez is back and he looks to be the same as last year. Very hard worker! He’ll score the winner for UTD against Portsmouth today. 2-1 I’m predicting unless our back four are on top of things. I’m redy for the Berba saga to end. Tho it does seem to be disrupting Tottenham at the moment, I still would like to have him in the line-up.
Arsenal…Nasri turns out to be good signing but Ade needs someone better to partner him up top. or just not use him and put in Bendtner as Harasuke said. I don’t know if he has more skill than Ade but he seems to have a bigger drive to perform well and impress.
I’m glad to see Cisse back in the league. Being a Utd fan when Roy Keane took over Sunderland I had to watch the team a little closer. See what the old captain could do, and do well is what he’s done. I predict a top 10 finish for them this year.
Surprises this year – Boro look hungry this year with the win and tottenham and almost def. Liverpool. Villa came bursting outta the gates, but couldn’t hold off Stoke?! Hull!! enough said about that, tho it was fulham they beat the latter team did put away Arsenal.
This may turn out to be the best season the EPL has seen in awhile. Now if Utd can just put away Portsmouth for the 3rd time in a month I’ll be a little more content.
GLORY, GLORY MAN UTD!
Normaly if we played like that in our first two games we’d have 2 points or 3 points max!! We now seem to have that added ability to win ugly which is what you need when you want to be champions. One more winger who can cross and who has a good footballing brain and I will really start believing.
Chelsea didnt play the same beautiful stuff they played against Pompey but yet more class from Deco won it for them.
Ive said it before and I will say it again, if Sunderland dont make Europe this season then it will have to be next. They really have added huge quality to their Squad.
Arsenal missed Hleb and Fabragaes badly unfortunately for them only one of them players will be available in future.
I dont understand the Spurs way of business. Last season they had probably the best 4 man strike force in England and they kept the worst one?
If Pompey play the way they played against Chelsea then United should ease past them. Although Fratton park is no longer just another away ground it is a fotress and between the big four only 4 points were won there last season (a point each of course)
August 25th, 2008 @ 15:21Well now that we’ve reached Tuesday morning it is clearly as we were last season, except for Arsenal!
Chelsea beat Portsmouth at home and Wigan away last season, so no change there.
Liverpool beat Boro at home and Sunderland away last season, so no change there either.
Utd took 4 points from Newcastle(H) and Pompey(A) last season, so no change there either!
Arsenal beat Fulham away last season so they are 3 points down. (West Brom, of course weren’t there last year).
We’re only 180 minutes into the season for crying out loud!
There was a significant consensus if you read all the pre season predictions that it would be:
Chelsea and Utd tooth and nail for the title again,
Liverpool and Arsenal for 3rd/4th, neither having done enough to bridge the gap.
2 games don’t change anything. Above predictions still stand and are the most likely scenario.
As for Harasuke: “Last point, Arsenal look very ordinary without Fabregas, as do Manchester without Ronaldo.”
You may have noticed(though obviously not) buddy that Tevez, Nani, Hargreaves, Anderson, Park and Saha were all unavailable last week. Carrick went off early with an injury.
August 26th, 2008 @ 06:15So you were looking at and evaluating Utd without Ronaldo were you? You need to get a little perspective don’t you??
Cesc Fabregas has proven, by way of his absence, that he is as valuable a player to a club as any in the world. Arsenal dont have the flow, the precision passing, or sturdiness through the middle that we have grown accustomed to, and it is all because of Cesc’s absence, in my opinion.
Tevez and Rooney will patch things together and drag ManU to the win column most weeks regardless, with defense being their calling card anyway (still the best in the Prem). They will be fine, clearly.
Liverpool need to show more, the right wing has been a mess so far with a lack of pace and quality making the team far too central in attack. Thank goodness Gareth Barry stayed at Villa, since he wouldnt help at all with opening the field for us. Use Kuyt as a supersub for Keane, Rafa, not on the right! GO REDS!
August 26th, 2008 @ 09:31BD Condell – I stated in my reply the same thing. UTD was without HArgreaves, Nani, Anderson, Tevez in first game. Some are back now and we are back to winning ways, but still need more. Fletcher isn’t going to score every game. haha
haha
August 26th, 2008 @ 20:00And to all the nay-sayers out there who commented on Fletcher being in the line-up for moral support and give a powerful hug while others score…He must have read those articles and is now laughing in the faces of all those that agreed with that comment
but top 4 will stay the same. 2 horse race and Arsenal, and Pool 3/4.
United arent anything special without Ronaldo, with Ronaldo best/2nd best team in Europe and without him not even in the top five.
August 26th, 2008 @ 20:02Liverpool_Fan, Unfortunately you can’t actually prove that. We will see how Utd go while Ronaldo is out for the next few weeks.
August 27th, 2008 @ 01:53I could say that Liverpool without Gerrard wouldn’t be in the top 12 in Europe, which is probably true, but its all hypothetical really!
sorry bb i’m with the rest of them. United has looked VERY ordinary. So has Liverpool and Arsenal but the latter 2 have produced at least SOME flowing passing moves whereas United’s best play in 2 games was Rooney’s flick turn and missed shot. Very lucky to get the points against an average portsmouth side. GO VENIT ST PETERSBURG! Because if United lose or need penalties to win again then they will be in the shitter
August 27th, 2008 @ 04:50Sorry BD 1 more thing. sorry for the double post but also it wasn’t Gerrard who got the PFA 2nd best player last year it was Torres so maybe Liverpool without Torres, Gerrard, Reina, Carra, Mascha, Hyypia & Babel wouldn’t be top 12? Is that what you were trying to say
August 27th, 2008 @ 04:52SG,
I agree Utd have been very ordinary. So you don’t think it’s a factor that not just Ronaldo but all the other players I mention being out? Of course it has a significant bearing.
Most of these will be back long before Ronaldo returns and we’ll see how it goes.
4-0 against Arsenal last season without him. Utd’s squad is full of quality, that’s why pundits, journalists, neutrals and the bookies all rate Utd/Chelsea as overwhelming favourites for the title with Liverpool/Arsenal playing the supporting roles (as usual)!
If you try hard enough, you can convince yourself of anything. But if it’s a Utd collapse you expect, in the absence of Ronaldo, then you are going to be sorely disappointed.
Finally, did you mention Hyypia and Babel in that list? Dear me, you lot are struggling more than I thought!!
August 27th, 2008 @ 06:11Babel is our best winger easily just inconsistant and last season Sami Hypia was outstanding playing in place of the injured Dani Agger who could also be added to that list!!
August 27th, 2008 @ 18:43But that’s just the point LF! He IS easily your best winger, so what does that say? He has potential but so far has been inconsistent and, mostly, unconvincing and many Liverpool fans are unsure whether he should be played as a winger or in more of a strikers role.
Hyypia has been a good player for Liverpool but he’s well past his best and near the end of his career.
Agger looks like the real deal but having missed last season he has a lot to do to show he has the ability of Ferdinand/Vidic or Terry/Carvahlo. Time will tell.
Looking at Liverpools’ early games they are really missing Mascherano in my view.
