Premier League Betting: Will We See A New Liverpool Manager This Season?

Brendan Rodgers

Since August 14th 2014, the Premier League has said farewell to eleven different managers. The shock departure of Tony Pulis from Crystal Palace just two days before the start of the new season started the ball rolling, with odds slashed from 40/1 to 4/1 overnight after rumours started to grow. Since then, the likes of Gus Poyet, Neil Warnock, Paul Lambert and Harry Redknapp have all either resigned or have been sacked, with managerial casualties starting even before the turn of the year. Another cracking year for football betting enthusiasts everywhere!

Now, with the 2015/16 season just round the corner, a new roster of managers are ready to dance with the cross-hairs.

It all starts with the three promoted sides, as it does every year. The pressure of surviving the drop the first time out, and retaining Premier League status is enormous, with Bournemouth, Norwich and Watford set for a testing and stressful campaign.

Cherries boss Eddie Howe will surely have the strongest safety net of the trio. The Bournemouth boss has guided his side to a first Premier League berth in the club’s history, having taken them from League 1 back in 2013. Winning the Championship last season was some feat, and there is an enormous amount of faith and respect in Howe, with the Englishman being voted the Football League Manager of the Decade only a few months ago. Certainly not untouchable, but it will take some meltdown for the 37 year-old to bite the dust.

Alex Neil led Norwich to 17 wins from 25 games last season, having taken over at Carrow Road in January. A playoff victory over Middlesbrough secured top flight status in 2015/16 for the club, but having only been a manager since 2013, Neil’s position is far from secure. A poor start from Norwich will put him firmly in the spotlight, with the Scot potentially a good bet for the axe.

Watford have appointed Spaniard Quique Flores for their first season back in the Premier League since for eight years, replacing former Chelsea midfielder Slaviša Jokanović. Flores is the Hornets’ seventh manager in just four years, and will know that failure is not an option. The Watford hierarchy have set a precedent of little patience, and Flores, should his side not hit the ground running, could be set for an early exit, even before the new year.

With regards to the current crop of Premier League managers, Tim Sherwood is certainly under scrutiny. Aston Villa have lost both Christian Benteke and captain Fabian Delph, who were both vital to their survival success of the last season. Without them, the task of improving on their 17th place finish, just three points from safety, looks to be a tough ask. Sherwood’s inexperience as a manager may count against him should his side come a cropper early on.

Brendan Rodgers, despite almost leading Liverpool to their first top flight title since 1989/90 two years ago, finds himself arguably the manager most under pressure as the new season inches closer. A seventh place finish, with no European football, and a devastating 6-1 loss to Stoke on the final day has left many wondering how he is still in a job. The Northern Irishman has once again spent heavily in the transfer window, and if his new faces fail to fire in a similar vein to his purchases last summer, Rodgers’ goose could well be cooked. A tempting bet, with some really nice odds floating around.
