Premier League 08/09 Fixtures

Written by Ahmed Bilal. Tagged: English Premier League

The English Premier League fixtures list for the 2008/2009 was released this Monday. No good in printing it - we’d be smacked down by NetResult (or whoever the EPL has hired this year to ensure that they make several thousand pounds per publisher to allow them to print fixtures) faster than you can ask ‘when did football stop being a sport?’.

With the changes expected due to cup ties and European ties and what not, the calendar for many clubs will be considerably changed throughout the course of the season, and that’s before we accommodate TV demands, which can throw up vicious fixture changes as we saw last season.

So we can’t print, nor can we automatically update. So, by inference, we must look enviously at the big corps and give you ‘highlights’. Well, frack that. As we look towards alternative solutions (displaying said fixtures without breaking copyright laws and / or a financially viable option of purchasing the rights), you are more than welcome to speculate on the 08/09 Premier League fixtures (subject to change due to cup ties and TV barons) that can be found here. A club-by-club version is available here.

  1. Fixture lists cannot be copyrighted - they’re statements of fact. You could easily phone each club, one-by-one and ask them to tell you the fixtures and then publish them. I’d stick them on the site and if they contact tell them to take you to court. They won’t do it because you’d win and then that would set a precedent that no-one has to pay NetResult anything at all.

  2. Fantastic - any volunteers?
  3. On more digging up…Fixture lists can be copyrighted if the information is treated as part of a database and not distributed publicly - which is exactly what the Premier League are doing.
