Potential candidates who could replace Mourinho at Chelsea

Chelsea’s start to the Premier League season has been far from what manager Jose Mourinho would have wanted for his Championship winning side.

After 10 games into the new season, the Blues sits 15th on the table having won only three of their league matches so far. Despite the team not being at their championship winning best. It would be fair to say that Mourinho’s problems have not been exclusive to the football field.

Since the beginning of the season, the Special One has been engaged in several off-field incidents that have thrown him into the firing line. From the departure of club doctor Eva Carneiro to a supposed mutiny within the playing group, Mourinho has caused the majority of his problems.

The Chelsea boss has thrown his job under more scrutiny after he was charged by the FA for misconduct over the weekend.

As debate rages as to whether the Portuguese boss should keep his job, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich may look to appoint one of several high-class managers rumoured to be interested in the Chelsea job.

The list of manager’s the Russian owner could place Mourinho with are:

1. Carlo Ancelotti

Carlo Ancelotti has been without a club since his dismissal from Real Madrid at the end of last season. Having succeeded Mourinho previously at the Spain’s capital, the former AC Milan manager would need lightning to strike twice if he was to be appointed Chelsea boss once again.

The Italian had a successful period at Stamford Bridge from 2009-2011. His greatest achievement during his time would undoubtedly be leading the side to a League and FA Cup double in a tremendous first season.

However, Ancelotti will need to keep silverware consistent if he is to keep his job at the Blues once again. Although he is available, The Telegraph has reported he would only be considered in an interim role rather than the permanent boss at the Bridge.

2. Guus Hiddink

Guus Hiddink is the other former Chelsea boss being linked to the manager role at the Blues once again. Despite the last time the Dutchman was at Chelsea it was on an interm basis, Hiddink led the side to FA Cup glory in his short time at the club.

Although Hiddink has struggled in recent years to find success in managerial roles, his brief time at Chelsea showed the short amount of time it takes for the boss to find success.

Hiddink has an uncanny ability to mould sides into champions, as Chelsea already possess a fantastic team, the Dutchman would be a fantastic appointment to get Chelsea back on track.

Pep Guardiola

3. Pep Guardiola

As a manager, Guardiola has achieved everything there is to achieve in both the Bundesliga and La Liga. Throughout his time at Barcelona and Bayern Munich, the Spaniard has been a regular Silverware winner.

Although Guardiola has always been rumoured with a Premier League move, his greatest chance could come as Chelsea boss.

Throughout their time at Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively, Mourinho and Guardiola built a fantastic rivalry. This only adds fuel to the fire if Guardiola was to replace his former adversary in England.

The Telegraph has reported that Chelsea is attempting to lure the Bayern Munich boss to gauge if Guardiola has any interest in the role.

4. Diego Simeone

The Atletico Madrid manager is another manager rumoured to be on Abramovich’s radar as a potential Mourinho replacement.

At the young age of 45, the Argentine has already made quite the name for himself, having developed players into superstars and winning silverware in each year of his management.

It’s no secret that Abramovich looks to bring in young successful managers when possible following the previous appointment of Andres Villas-Boas. Simeone could also be the man to mend the relationship between players and the club after a supposed mutiny amongst the Chelsea playing group.

Another fantastic sight would be to see Diego Costa reunited with his former manager, as the striker was undoubtedly at his career best whilst under the guidance of the Argentine.

With Chelsea currently reviews Mourinho’s position as their manager, the Special One has an unsettling couple of days till a result is revealed. However, Chelsea fans can take some comfort in knowing that Abramovich will be looking at bringing the best of the best in, to take Chelsea to the top once again.
