BD - It doesn't matter what the score was when Scholes came on. I merely made the point that he played as well as he ever had done, picking 40 yard passes. The scoreline has nothing to do with how Scholes played, and I wasn't saying it did.

Makelele had a few months at Chelsea when he was 35, Giggs has not yet hit 35. Can you name some of these "countless players" who were playing football at the highest standard when they were 35? Looking at United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool... I can't really think of many/any who had players in their team at 35/36. Help me out?

Scott,
Not wishing to detract from your praise of the legend that is Paul Scholes there are a couple of points I'd make.
Regarding your comment:
"For the second half of the 2005-2006 season, Scholes was ruled out because of ‘blurred vision,' and we were forced to look at a dim vision of the future. Our best central midfield pairing during this time was Ryan Giggs and John O'Shea, and whilst they were more competent than the likes of Alan Smith or Kieran Richardson, who'd had a stint in the middle, we were miles short of the standards Chelsea were setting at the time."

I agree with the last line but it was not down to Scholesy. That season Utd played 30 games prior to his injury, with a record of 18W/8D/4L. After his injury there were 26 games with a record of 17W/5D/4L. Very similar. That season was not about Scholes as much as it was about filling the void left by Keane. Giggs and O'Shea did brilliantly in midfield, including a run of 8 straight wins.

Similarly with:
"However, Scholes returned for the final game of that season as we beat Charlton 4-0, and played as though he hadn't missed any time at all."

Scholes replaced O'Shea just after half-time in that match with the score already 3-0 to United.

Scholes is a legend and his retirement is being excellently planned by SAF. Remember that he missed 3 to 4 months last season and it was seamless. Anderson (brought in the suceed him) really looked the part.

And sorry to be picky but:

"Another two seasons will see Paul Scholes at 35-years-old, which sounds incredibly old for a top flight footballer - particularly at a club flying high like United - however, for a player who has taken such good care of himself, it's not out of the question"

Wouldn't 35 or 36 be considered, barring serious injury, normal? There are countless players who have played to this age, Giggs and Makelele to name just 2.

Very good article. I think maybe 2-3 years back he might have been their best player but now he is a bit old. He's definitely a very very good player but I don't think he is the best, at least of england.
