Owen should delay Newcastle return
News that Michael Owen is working to return to football as quickly as possible should not just worry Newcastle United fans, it should drive them to start a letter-writing campaign imploring the England star to take as long as it is necessary to recuperate.
Newcastle have had a torrid history with injuries, and unfortunately Owen has been plagued by injuries as well since he’s joined the Magpies.
Yes, it’s good news that he’s trying to regain his old pace by working with a special trainer. Yes, it’s good news if he can come back to the England and Newcastle squads - both need him dearly.
But it’s not worth having a repeat of last year, when Michael Owen was rushed back, clearly unfit and got injured again, putting him out for another season.
Bravado is part of greatness, but it doesn’t count for diddley squat if you get injured again and again.
Hopefully the Newcastle United management see the sense in holding Owen back till next season and even then easing him into the game instead of rushing him to playing games again. As long as he can get back to full fitness and get some his old pace back, it doesn’t really matter how long it takes.

I dont think you know what your talking about here, he got injured playing for England last summer and he was only in one NUFC squad towards the end of last season and got on for 20mins against Birmingham so how can we be blamed for rushing him back when everyone knows he rushed himself back for the World Cup.
He did not even play in the Shearer Farewell game as the England Manager at the time banned him from playing in it so how are NUFC to blame for his current injury problems.
Everytime I see this muppet has written another article I cringe. I think to myself, it can’t possibly be as bad as the last one, can it? Well, guess what, it is!!!!
Owen’s a big boy now and so too is Glenn Roeder, neither of them would risk the striker’s longterm health. You only need to look at Roeder’s treatment of Kieron Dyer to see how important his players fitness is to him. He treat Dyer with kid gloves and made sure he stayed out for as long as was needed to give him time to heal properly. Owen will be the same.
Michael Owen has been out for a long time and needs to keep motivated. The best way of doing that for him is, he’s said, to focus on laying for Newcastle as soon as possible. I’m sure neither he nor his manager will risk him coming back too soon.
Hmmm, I think you should be targeting this at England rather than NUFC, they’ll be the ones who put him back on the pitch too soon, same as last time!!
And wasn’t the second injury suffered by Owen last season totally unconnected with the first one he suffered? So itwas just pure coincidence that he suffered a second injury it was nothing to do with being rushed back.
You obviouslt don’t follow Newcastle or Michael Owens situation very closely as he will not be “rushed” back. With the operation he has had it takes around 6 months to totaly recuperate, which takes you into April.
Roeder is not Souness, he has learned from his ineptness when it comes to rushing players back, he makes sure his players are ready to come back even in this unbelievable injury crisis.
Owen rushing back last time had very little to do with Newcastle United and more to do with England and Owen himself both desperate for him to play in the world cup. Knowing we had no chance without him.
Yes, I DO follow their (Newcastle’s and Owen’s) situation quite closely. It’s not pleasant at times, but I follow.
John - Dyer made the same mistake Owen did - of trying to come back too early.
My point is not that Newcastle made a mistake last time (which, eventually, they didnt, because England was being run by Eriksson who couldn’t stand to go to the World Cup without Owen and Rooney) but that this time, they have a chance to play things right and they should be really careful with it.
Jeez…
Owen who?..is he a footballer
call me names if you will, but try RTFA first.
Ahmed - I don’t think we will rush Owen back - it’s true that last year he came back early - but that was because he was so keen to play in the world cup. He didn’t play much for Newcastle at the end of last season - if you look at the stats.
The management at Newcastle are sensible - and he’s under one of the best knee surgeons in the world - Dr. Steadman - so I expect he will play some games this season - and I expect him to be as quick as ever.
But certainly Roeder is not expecting too much from him this season - that’s why we are hoping we can get a striker in on loan today!
But let’s be clear - Owen owes Newcastle big time and Michael knows that - we have stood by him and have had hardly any return so far from our massive investment in him.
